Treating tendonitis involves reducing the inflammation that is causing the pain. Resting the affected area (wrist, elbow etc.) is important as overuse will not allow proper healing. While natural remedies like turmeric and ginger can aid the tendon in healing more quickly, it will still take some time for the inflammation to subside and the tendon to return to normal.
What is Tendonitis?
Tendons connect muscle to bone and when this tissue becomes inflamed, it is known as tendonitis. Tendonitis is painful and heals slowly, but natural remedies can help. Tendonitis is usually caused by overuse, especially for those over 40. Although the body possesses hundreds of tendons, a specific few are usually the problem because they are located where the blood supply is poor. Insufficient blood leads to not enough oxygen and nutrients, needed by the tendon for healing.
Natural Remedies for Tendonitis
There are many herbal remedies and alternative cures for tendonitis. Alfalfa is well-known as an effective blood remedy and is helpful in increasing blood, needed by the tendon for healing. Turmeric and ginger are useful herbal treatments; other herbs with anti-inflammatory properties are solomon’s seal and arnica. Acupuncture and ice packs give short-term pain relief.
Alfalfa has been known as a ‘superfood’ throughout history by many different cultures. Pain relief is one of the many uses of alfalfa as a common home remedy; it is also an effective blood detoxifier. Alfalfa contains many different nutrients and is generally considered safe for adults, children and pregnant or nursing mothers. However, alfalfa is so effective that it should not be used in conjunction with aspirin or blood thinning medications.
Turmeric and Ginger
Turmeric and ginger are effective alternative remedies for many ailments, including tendonitis. These home cures work to increase blood supply to the tendon by increasing circulation, thus reducing inflammation and aiding in faster healing. These two home cures are also great antioxidants, which also helps tissues heal by removing free radicals.
Transverse Friction Massage
Massage generally increases circulation and speeds healing. A technique called transverse friction massage is believed to reduce tendonitis pain, improve blood flow and prevent scar tissue and adhesions from forming in the connective tissue. As long as the problem area is reachable, anyone can easily learn the technique to use on themselves, making this a safe, effective and free home cure.
Tendonitis can be effectively treated at home with herbal cures and massage. No matter what treatment is used, if the affected tendon is not rested, it will not heal properly. Increasing blood flow to the tendon is central to reducing the inflammation and pain.
[YEA] 02/14/2009: Kathy from Las Vegas, NV: "Alfalfa cured my tendonitis: I took 24 tablets a day, 8 at each meal for 2 weeks then tapered off to about 10 or so a day. I took the heavy dose for 2 weeks to saturate my body then I took 10 a day for about a year. It's been 10 years and I usually have no pain or swelling. If I type alot or write alot I do have some discomfort but nothing like before!
As a side note I had some testing done and was told that I now have carpal tunnel in both arms but I had no idea because I have no pain!"
[YEA] 04/01/2012: George from Caldwell, Idaho replies: "Thanks for your post Kathy. I had been taking the minimum required Alfalfa tablets for about two weeks and didn't feel any improvement with my arthritis and tendonitis. After reading your post I took 18 tablets today and actually have felt a vast improvement with my pain already!"
[YEA] 08/21/2013: Nancy from Bradford, Pa: "I've been trying to self-diagnose since we don't have health insurance and, as always, came to earthclinic. I'm assuming that I have either tendonitis or bursitis in my shoulders. I had injured my right shoulder several years ago and it took a while to heal on its own, but wasn't painful after that. I broke my right wrist the beginning of this year and was in a cast for about 5 weeks. I believe that was the turning point. Between immobilizing the right arm and overusing the left, I've been in pretty much constant pain in both shoulders... Neither one of them move very freely, so it could also be frozen shoulders. The ache and burning have been very difficult to bare. I started taking the 2 T. ACV and 1 T. honey (raw... very important... and local if you can) twice daily as was recommended by James... What a difference! I've only been taking it for 3 days, but I noticed the difference after the first dose. Just wanted to wait to write about it for fear that it was all in my head! Mind you, I'm nowhere near cured yet, but its been like taking a pain reliever and the burning is completely gone!! I need to search to find some exercises that will help me strengthen both arms without injuring them further, but I feel like that's possible now!! I will continue to take this morning and night! Since I store my ACV in the fridge I warm it slightly in the microwave (hope that doesn't alter it! ) and then put the honey in it to dissolve it, then I add ice water. I tried drinking it as a warm tea-like drink, but just didn't like it as much. The cool drink goes down very easy for me. Thank you earthclinic and everyone who takes the time to let us know what we can do to help ourselves naturally!"
[YEA] 11/06/2006: James from Pemberton, New Jersey: "Apple Cider Vinegar has cured: varicose veins, weight lose, tendonitis, wrinkles. In April of 2005, I came across a booklet for ACV, at the time I was 50 years old I played sports in high school, a construction worker for 20 years and a mover for the last 15, so I have done a number on my body over the years. My daughter convinced me to start taking ACV... I have taken it everyday since! The health benefits have been many. The first thing I noticed was my hair and nail growth, doesn't seem like much but my hair was white and had no color, but was growing back in blonde! I thought that was amazing! Over all the years of abuse on my feet and ankles I had purple feet from the varicose veins, it really was a severe case, after two months of use my feet started to look clearer to me, but I wasn't sure so I started taking pictures....I now have NO varicose veins on my feet, legs or anything. In April of 2005 I was a size 38 pants, today I am a 32 pants. I have not done any extra exercise to achieve this, It simply melted the pounds away (I also have a six pack again). The ACV has given me a facelift, I do NOT look like I am 51! My wrinkles around my eyes have literally disappeared. My skin is tighter, firmer every where. I feel like a new man. Over the years while abusing my body in my everyday life (working) I developed new and painful body movements, aches where I never had before and eventually the Doc diagnosed me with tendonitis (really painful) in both of my shoulders, being a mover this isn't good for business, it really started hurting my paycheck (then I started the ACV). I really had not realized I stopped taking the naproxen the Dr. had prescribed until I went to see him for my physical. He asked me if I needed a new script, that's when I realized I used to live on those pills everyday and hadn't needed them once since I started taking the ACV, so I told the Dr. about the ACV he was awed, seeing the results for himself he decided to start taking it, in fact my Barber, Boss, Coworkers, Kids, Brothers and sister all now take it with health benefits of there own. I tell you I LOVE ACV it has changed my life and made me a new healthier man. I actually believe I have a long healthy life ahead. The recipe I use everyday is: 2 table spoons of ACV and 1 Tablespoon of honey. Add water to taste. I do this two times a day, everyday. Good luck to all in your journey to a healthier you!"Replies

[YEA] 07/10/2012: Jerome from Brooklyn, New York: "As a lifelong bodybuilder and construction worker, I suffered with tendonitis all over my body for most of my adult life--specifically in both of my elbows. I tried everything you could imagine--acupuncture, active-release technique, etc. Eventually however I found the cure to come from a combination of two supplements: bromelain and cissus.
Here is a quick explanation of the anatomy behind tendonitis. Think of your tendons as ropes or cables that operate to pull your muscles and joints like a machine. When these ropes or cables are put under strain, or are weakened for some reason, they tend to fray under the tension. When your tendons fray, tiny fibers poke out from them, just like a frayed old rope.
Now, all tendons are contained within a "tendon sheath, " and the tendon moves back and forth within that sheath as you move your various body parts. When a tendon is healthy and smooth, it moves back and forth within the sheath smoothly. When a tendon is frayed, however, it creates friction as it moves back and forth in the sheath. The inflammation that results from the tendon's frayed fibers constantly rubbing against the tendon sheath is--you guessed it--tendonitis. In theory, the body should eventually be able to digest up the frayed fibers and heal the tendon, but anyone who's had tendonitis knows that this process can easily take years.
Now here's why the remedy works: bromelain is a very potent protein-digesting enzyme derived from pineapple cores. When you ingest this enzyme, it basically enhances your body's ability to digest up any sort of scar tissue, etc. , built up in your body. The frayed tendon fibers causing your tendonitis are precisely the sort of dead fiber that bromelain helps to digest.
Although bromelain by itself works very well, I have found that adding cissus (an herb known for healing joints) together with the bromelain brought me back pretty much good as new. Just remember to take the bromelain on an empty stomach, otherwise it will simply digest whatever protein happens to be in your stomach and you will have wasted your money.
Finally, while topically-applied DMSO and drinking apple cider vinegar also have a good reputation for helping tendonitis and inflammation, I don't think they're necessary, although they are both excellent remedies and adding them certainly won't hurt you."Replies

07/11/2012: Sparrowhawk from Bay Area, Ca, Usa replies: "Could you please let us all know the following which would be very helpful:
What dosages of Bromelain and Cissus did you take? How many times a day?
How long before you started seeing results?
Do you need to continuously ingest both in order to have the relief, or do you just take them for periods when your tendons may become inflamed?
My tendon issues are all between wrist and elbow, mostly from mousing and typing as far as I can tell, but the only relief I get is from long periods of non-use/rest (not often I can do that with work), some relief from electro-stim and B6. Would love to try this if it might help me. Thank you!"

[WARNING!] 04/02/2011: Dallas from Amesbury, Ma: "For anyone out there with tendon problems ie: tendinitis (tendonitis) please beware and search this out on the web. If you ever take the antibiotic Cipro, or anything in the same family, take note that Cipro, or members of the same family, can cause tendon inflammation and even tendon rupture! This is along with a long list of other side effects including death. I have just been on Cipro, having started taking it for a severe kidney infection. When I started to get back some old tendon pain issues, I looked Cipro up on the web and sure enough, it can be a killer for tendons - even long after you take the medication. I finished my Cipro a couple of weeks ago, and the tendon pain is increasing rather than decreasing. I also had many other painful symptoms (back pain, neck pain, headache etc... ) while on Cipro. And the darned infection has returned! I refused Cipro this time around and am on Bactrim. I am almost afraid to look up the side effects of this drug. If it wasn't for the sake of my kidneys............"Replies

09/21/2011: Skycandy from Mi, Fl replies: "I too have been floxed. I will never take any form of the anitbiotics flouroquinillones nor will any member of my family. I took Cipro in January 2011 for an UTI and w/in 3 days my knees felt tight and stiff. By the 5th day my right knee was hurting and swollen and by the 7th day my left knee was the same. A co-worker asked if I was taking an anti-biotic and I told her I was, and she said it could be the cause.
Sure enough, after researching, I found that Cipro can cause tendonitis. On the 8th day I could not even walk and have been struggling to get back to normal ever since. I am not able to run, walk for long periods of time or do any kind of activity. I was completely healthy before taking this medication and now I feel like a handicap person some days. I am only 36 yrs old. Yes it does have flouride in it. It is posion and the FDA knows and still lets this be on the market. Levaquin is the same thing. I have had x-rays, MRI's, you name it, and according to the DR's there is nothing wrong w/me. It is very frustrating and I am hoping to find a cure on this website. Something to flush this poison out of my body. My wrists, hands, fingers, ankles, toes and kness have all been effected by this crap. If anyone has any suggestions, please help!!"

Preferring the powder for price/quality and the fact that it isn't multi-level marketed. I only take it on occasion but do notice it's effects... Seems to settle my system, lift brain fog.. Do some research on it... However, I am still a little cautious with it as I am waiting for more studies to confirm it's effectiveness in eliminating toxins..
Ted, what are your thoughts on Zeolite?"
[WARNING!] 10/18/2011: Jc from Los Angeles, Ca, Usa replies: "I HIGHLY ADVISE AGAINST TAKING CIPROFLOXIN!!
I am a 25 year old, 90lbs woman. I was prescribed Cipro for a UTI. After one dose, I felt extremely stiff, nausea, and was having difficulty walking. I decided to lie down (but had to get up to go to the restroom because of the UTI). When I lifted myself out of bed, I heard a loud pop in my achilles tendon and immediately was struck with intense pain. I could no longer put any weight on it--let alone walk.
Turns out after researching, I found out that one of the side effects for Ciprofloxin is ruptured tendons!!! I have greatly suffered from this drug and was unable to walk for months. Luckily, I did not need surgery as some of the tendon is still intact. Though, I am still unable to run on it, carry heavy weight, do streneous activity and that happened 6 months ago! I'm so young and I had to share my story because I don't want anyone to go through the same experience that I did!!
Please read all side effects and try to do research on prescriptions before hand, and decide whether the benefits of those meds truly outweigh the side effects. You may save yourself from serious side effects, a lifelong injury, and excess medical bills!!
Heres to a long and healthy life! ~"
[NAY] 10/31/2011: Omg from Columbia, Mo replies: "Cipro should only be used when death is the alternative. a) developed rotator cuff tendonitis while on drug. b) developed proximal hamstring tendinopathy a few months later.

11/24/2011: Sophie from Pdx, Oregon replies: "I was sick for about 10 weeks it began with a yeast infection and soon I had lower abdomen pressure. Frequent urnination, fever and headache. Finally I decided to go to the doctor because all of my natural remedies seem to not be able to end the fever and pressure so I was put on Cipro I'm a vegan, and my doctor gave me 5 days worth told me take it for only 3 days, because I'm so sensitive. Well on the third day my joint and tendons were inflamed it was hard to walk or sleep. I'm amazed that Cipro is prescribed to anyone! After reading how dangerous the side effects are... even when you stop taking Cipro it can still affect your tendons 3-6 months down the road!! I was so freaked out! I drank 2 tablespoons of turmeric in water, vitamin C and magnesuim and I'm going to continue that for a few days. Instead of Cipro I'm taking garlic oil pills every few hours. After, I'm all well I'm going to do a Fluoroide Detox program."
[SIDE EFFECTS] 04/20/2012: Melinda from Sitka, Alaska replies: "I too was given cipro and levofloxin during a 4 month episode with a giant kidney stone. I quit taking the levofloxin a week ago after experiencing severe pain in my right shoulder and now my left shoulder and across my neck. I was blown away when I started researching this on the internet and saw the damage this drug does to tendons. I can't believe doctors prescribe this knowing what it can do. My shoulders are weak and painful. I am now taking msm as I heard this repairs tendons and cell structure , I am also taking phenocane for inflamation and pain. Icing the area seems to help and light massage with Traumeel helps also. Any suggestions are helpful."
04/18/2014: Michela from Missouri replies: "Hi. I didn't know if you still had problems with your infection, but I have never seen a bladder/kidney infection or kidney stones resist Dr. Schultz's K-B Formula and K-B Tea. He is in California and runs the American Botanical Pharmacy. If you follow the Cleanse he has (or just do the best you can to follow it) I can just about guarantee happy results. Even used it in the boonies of Bolivia for someone whose kidneys had become completely blocked by stones. Medical intervention saved her, but she was in extreme pain. There were no juicers out there, but after 1 week she had no pain whatsoever."
05/02/2014: Kylie from Sydney, Australia replies: "For those with side effects from taking Cipro, perhaps taking Borax will reverse the damage as this detoxes flouride in the body and restores magnesium and calcium synthesis in the body which is responsible for joint and muscle pain.
It's very easy to take. I make a solution of 500ml filtered water and dissolve a rounded 1/2 teaspoon into this. Leave it to dissolve completely stirring occasionally. Then add 5ml of the borax solution to a glass of filtered or distilled water twice a day. At this strength you can't even taste the borax."
[YEA] 12/08/2010: Jennifer from Mayerthorpe, Ab Canada: "A few years ago, I started to suffer from both tendonitis and tennis elbow. At the same time, I was working in my profession of accounting clerk/data entry and thought that this combined with getting into a regular exercise routine had caused the pain. Boy was I ever wrong. I tried anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy, acupuncture, whatever I thought might help. Improvement was noted, but the pain was still there.
Last December (2009), I couldn't sleep because my arms ached so badly. I got up in the middle of the night and started searching on the internet. I found some anecdotal experiences with cutting out aspartame helping with many health issues. In my attempts to lose/maintain my weight, I had switched from drinking regular "brown pop" to diet. Some days, especially while I was enjoying the holiday foods, I would drink two or more cans of diet pop or beverages a day. That night, I decided to cut out foods and drinks with aspartame as much as I could. Within THREE DAYS, I felt no pain in my arms at all. I have tried to return to drinking the odd aspartame infused beverage, but by the next day, I am nearly in tears and can hardly work on any of my projects, whether at work or home doing my crafty stuff. Why the FDA and Canada's counterpart still allow this nasty chemical to be put into the food supply, I'll never know, but at least I know that I can live a nearly pain free existence thanks to my own little experiment."Replies

I don't know when the tendonitis set in but I remember I couldn't use the thumb. I did research and no one had a cure. I am no novice with vitamins and supplements as I was taking quite a few at the time.
I did some research and the following are what I attribute to curing the tendonitis. Oh, I ran into some financial problems and stopped taking them it took about 9 months(I guess) for it to come back. Rescue 1250 10 pills a day, GLC 2000 per instructions, hyaluronic acid 50mg 2x a day, MSM 6,000mg a day(start slow), MSM cream 3x or more a day, serrapeptast 80,000IU's, calcium/magnesium 3,000mg a day. ACV 1teaspoon with meals and Ultra Source of Life liquid per instructions. I was already taking some of this anyway I simply added a few and increased dosages. I think the GLC 2000 was the key but its just a guess. I don't know how long it took to go away I just noticed one day it was gone. My guess is 3-4 months. U can experiment after the pain is gone and cut back on a lot of this it is pricey. I cut back on everything by easily 1/2. Good luck!"

-work out (exercise w/ dumbells, etc. ) 5 times a week
-stretch the tendon many times in the day, massaging the tendon (bring it to the surface) -after work out, ice tendon for 15 minutes, no more than that.
-Take Glucosamine Chondroitin W/ Msm triple strength 2 times a day
-the Glucosomin, stretching, exercise, and ice do it, don't leave anything out. After two weeks, take a day or two off doing absolutly nothing with that tendon.. then start back... You should feel it healing in about 5 days.. will be able to tell a huge difference in about 3 weeks."

03/09/2012: Liz from Boston, Massachusetts replies: "Francisca - Wishing you well for your upcoming surgery.
I have a very similar problem in my upper left arm that I believe is tendonitis caused by repetitive movement vs. An actual tear. I am still in the 'wait and see' stage hoping that the tincture of time will help. But, since it has affected my range of motion in that arm, I suspect I will end up having it checked out if it's not better within the next month or so.
I found that taking 2,000 IU's of extra Vitamin D helped loosen things up a bit. I was taking 6,000 and bumped it up to 8,000. I'm leary of going higher than that, but can't help wondering if going higher would have helped even further.
In any event, I just wanted to send along my wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery."
03/09/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Liz, I am sad to hear that you have the same problem I have. I have recently taken a 400.000 IU of Vit. D because in France you can take one dose which is good for a number of months (you can choose for three, four or six months). I didn't feel any difference. I have it in the upper left arm as well, better than the right as I am right handed. With me only half of the tendon is torn and it created a thickness on the top, the other half is stressed trying to cope. I couldn't go on like this because as I usually don't have pain I keep doing the wrong movements and then it hurts a lot. Two doctors warned me that I can overdo it any time and then it can really go so badly wrong that the operation will be far worse. One can get better with physiotherapy but it seems that you never really cured. I am afraid.... afraid of the operation, afraid of one week in the hospital, afraid of the six weeks with little movement and after that all the physiotherapy just now my husband is going to retire in May but I'm afraid that there is no other choice.
Thanks for caring and please keep me informed of how things go with you. I will try to do the same so you know how it is. Maybe it is better than we both think?"

And you are right, a bit of compassion and warmth when you are not feeling well (and even when you are) makes you feel so good..... I don't know what to expect here in Switzerland but as a rule in this part they are not very warm, or maybe they are but they don't know how to show it! We have a last appointment with the surgeon tomorrow afternoon and I hope he will let me come home sooner. Even if I can't do anything I am better off in my own bed with my books and my TV programs in languages that I do speak! My three children where born in Holland many years ago and although I quite like Dutch people the nurses were far too cold and impersonal to the point of frightening me. I was very young, no family around.... But I think that the fact that I was a foreigner didn't impress them either!
Sad to hear that you had to suffer so much but nice you had someone to comfort you! Great that you have recovered and we have you to give us good advice, really appreciated! You know, now people are becoming more and more distant it really makes me happy when I meet people who are warm and friendly! A while ago I was already suffering with my arm and had a horrific cold but had to travel quite a distance on my own by train. As there was an accident the whole schedule was turned upside down and my German not being very good made things even more difficult but I met this wonderful retired Swiss couple and we traveled together from then on! I think that we have now a lasting friendship and they will surely visit us when we move to our new home! So you see..... Many people may not be nice but the nice ones really make a huge difference and I am sure you touched a lot of people's hearts! Bless you! "
[YEA] 01/21/2009: Shawn from Cambridge, Minnesota, USA: "I woke up with tendonitis in my elbow. When I have had tendonitis, it normally has lasted 1-2 weeks minimum. With this treatment I came up with, it was almost gone in 24 hours (almost had full range of motion in arm with minimal pain), and completely gone in 36 hours.
In the first 24 hours, I took these items in the morning and evening: 3 T (instead of called for 2 T) of my daily multivitamin, 1000 mg Vitamin C with rose hips, Turmeric 400 mg/95% curcumin (that's how the label shows it). The Turmeric and Vitamin C are taken for their anti-inflammatory properties. The last ingredient, which I believe might be the most important is MSM lotion (contains 15% MSM). I applied this lotion on the area around every 2 hours. MSM is a good natural painkiller and also works well against different muscular problems and inflammation. I noticed a remarkable decrease in pain a couple hours after applying the MSM lotion the first time, and believe that is the main cause of the decrease. I was unable to do this treatment for the first 5 hours of the tendonitis because of work, otherwise it might have been gone in 24 hours.

Drink more water especially during meals, lots of cucumber to dissolve uric acid and alkalization by baking soda and lime juice to decalcify circulation that caused the problem also. Try to remove constipation by taking baking soda will also help. Ted"
