Sjogren's Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder (much like arthritis or lupus) that characteristically attacks the mucous membranes and results in symptoms of a dry mouth and dry, sore eyes. Typically, Sjogren's affects women more than men and emerges after 40 years of age.
If you have Sjogren's Syndrome you may experience additional symptoms such as fatigue, vaginal dryness, dry or rashy skin, and arthritic symptoms in the joints. A dry cough is also possible, and such symptoms will be the central focus of any natural treatment for Sjogren's, relieving the discomfort of its symptoms in anticipation that the condition itself will self-correct in time, as it often does.
Natural Cures: People with Sjogren's firstly should focus on hydration and lubrication, drinking plenty of water, using moisturizers, saline eye drops, humidifiers, and even chewing gum can help relieve symptoms.

09/26/2008: Angela from Broomfield, CO: "A couple times a year I have a painful swelling of one of the parotid glands (main salivary gland) on either side of my face due to Sjogren`s syndrome. I have had this many times before and have never been able to stop the pain and swelling which usually lasts for 2 weeks...until now. I tried the castor oil heat pack the first night, leaving it on over night and woke up with no pain! The gland is still sore to the touch, but I have never experience such relief without the use of corticosteroids. I will continue to use this method from now on. I am a believer!"
Warm pack of castor oil for relief is good to know. I also suffered from inflamation of the salvary and parrotid glands. These glands become sore and enlarged because they do not have the right nutrients to manufacture saliva. Because they are depleted and still trying to work they become larger and painful. It is important to relieve these glands.
In 1985 when I first had the symptoms of Sjogrens with a vengence and found only topical drops for tears, saliva etc, it was apparent to me I needed to find out what was causing this in my body (female, 43 yrs). By luck I found a report serendititously offered at a symposeum by a doctor who reported that while he was not looking for relief for dry eyes among the fishing population which were his test subjects, that was their unamous report to him. He had been giving them an oil extracted from borage. I found borage oil at a small speciality store for vitamins and supplements. Within a few weeks of taking the oil pretty liberally my painfully eyes were relieved and the glands in my face became soft and pain free.
If is the gamma linoleic acid in the tasteless oil which my body needed. Its clear that while the precursors may be in my body, I did not have the ability to convert them into gamma linoleic acid. Once this was supplied the endocrine glands which secrete saliva and tears as well as many other glands such as the liver and pancreas, sweat and mucus in the lining of the reproductive tract, as well as the mamary glands functioned well. One terrific happy result was that the painful fibrous tissue in the breast became soft and pain free.
That been my experience and if it can help someone else be pain free that would give me great pleasure.

Collagen and Keratin Capsules
[YEA] 08/11/2008: Janine from Wellington , NZ: "I have been taking Collagen/Keratin capsules for 2 weeks. I started taking these as a possible cure for neck pain which i have suffered from for years. I developed Sjogrens syndrome 2 years ago as a result of a nasty virus I had. I have had the dry mouth which has affected the linings of my mouth and caused bad breath. In the last year I also had dry gritty eyes, and dry vagina. After two weeks on the collagen/keratin
capsules I now have saliva in my mouth! My eyes and vagina are improving with moisture too. And yes my Neck pain has practically dissappeared. Hope someone else might find this cure works for them too!!"

I also take Collagen for my neck problems and have the dry eye and mouth issue which causes bad breath and drives me crazy!! Please let us know how to take these so I can prevent taking prescription meds. Thanks :)"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 04/20/2009: Suza from Sydney, NSW, Australia: "I have Sjogrens syndrome, a mild version, but what has really helped me is taking a lot of ___ EPA & vitamin E fishoil as well as Nodic Cod liver oil, I can feel the difference when I dont take it, as my symptoms worsen.
I also feel that getting a neck massage helps my symptoms, I have a feeling that the neck seems to be linked to the sjogrens somehow , I have always had a sore neck too, but have been doing stretches that help. anyway give the ____ fish oil pills a go- I take 12 a day + 3 nordic cod liver oil pills
have been doing that for years and it seems to keep it under control."
08/28/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France: "Hi Carie, I think that you didn't see my questions! Anyway, I am glad that despite being diagnosed with this horrible illness you seem to be doing very well! I don't know whether I have it or not but I will try to find out. I am now reading a book on the Dry Eye syndrome and what I read there about Sjogren's is really frightening! Another cause for my dry eyes could be that they don't close well during the night I will try to sleep with them covered tonight and see if it is better this way as they are mostly dry during the night.
As far as getting rid of the parasites, what did you do?"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 09/03/2013: Steenie from Florida: "One time, I did put my Sjogren's into "remission" for 6 years, actually... I started going back to the things which got me "into the mess" to begin w/...
First of all, mine came from having a toxemia as a child as well as a genetic predisposition... I had been food combining and vegan for years but I didn't find help until I got OFF the Prednisone eye drops I'd been doing for years for my Uveitis (I guess, I should tell others to work caution and check w/ a Naturpoath, uveitis is a serious condion, as well)... I actually tapered off of them as well as (diluted w/ distilled water and more over a period of a month), I had found the ultimately, Eyebright in the eye (would recommend, now, checking Weleda or a homeopath as the way I did it caused infection), but infection or not, the body was then able to heal... Also, around that time, I did a liver cleanse using only milk thistle tea with a juice fast over a period of time. I would also recommend that anyone with Sjogren's take out any nightshades from their diet or regime, sincerely, my uveitis would flare and I also didn't realize that tomatoes were a culprit, I knew I reacted to all other nightshades... I know that I have been successful w/ potatoes, but don't remember doing them around the time I got rid of it.
I got in a less clean environment and the Uveitis crept in some and began use in the eye of the Pred drops again (should've stuck w/ the eyebright, really)... But, thought I was "normal"... Many eye surgeries later, more Pred and not keeping up w/ the natural diet, doing more man made things (it's hard, you need the right nutrients when you have both these conditions, if vegan, you really need to supplement w/ a quality D3 and B12 supplement as well as having a great source of calcium)... and the Sjogren's came back... I'm going to try my former regimine and see how it goes, if that doesn't work, I'm moving where the air is cleaner. Hope this helps someone else! :)"
05/15/2012: Bradshad from North Providence, Rhode Island: "Karlapep, go vegan, better yet go on a green juice cleanse or the master cleanse. Also look up proper food combining(very important). Buy a book. I recommend The Ph Miracle by DR. Robert Young. Correct your diet, use no supplements and your immune system is designed to heal all. Also sounds like you need to cleanse your liver. Im a landscaper not a naturopath, but I read alot. Good luck."Replies

I feel like I was going to dry up like a shrivelled leaf and cease functioning - there was another comment about dying like this, and I thought it struck a cord with me - we must listen to ourselves, we know something is wrong with our bodies."

Gerald Green is a great person and will answer all your questions in case you either phone him (which I did) or write to him! Anyway, the book is quite interesting as he talks about other illnesses, including cancer!"
05/15/2012: Karlapep from Mandeville, La replies: "I am having difficulty and really desperate for help at this point. Have had digestion problems (nausea, stomach ache, bubble-in-chest feeling, just to name a few), all growing slowly but steadily for the past year. In addition, for the past 6 months I have had dry mouth, sometimes severe and sometimes goes away for a few hours during the day but always seems to return not long after I put anything in my stomach. Now even water affects me to varying degrees.
Naturopath did bloodwork last week for thyroid panel testing and awaiting the results since I suspect this could be the cause of slow digestion and hence the dry mouth. I've also been tested for Sjogren's which came back negative, but primary physician feels I should still see a rheumatologist to get further feedback.
I'd rather be hypothyroid instead of having Sjogrens for sure, but if not my thyroid at the root of all of this (I have classic symptoms, female 57 with thinning hair, cold all the time, dry skin and mouth, pale, sparse outer eyebrows, plus I have ALWAYS gotten a red patch right over my thyroid and surrounding area for as long as I could remember. Lasts for 30 minutes then goes away with no rhyme or reason). But if not thyroid issue, I feel like this is something else affecting my gut causing ALL the symptoms, and not necessarily Sjogren's.
Have had testing for diabetes, gall bladder, etc. , and all stellar. TSH testing alone was over 3, normal by my regular PCP's standards, but naturopath tells me she is concerned with anything over 2 so she ordered the complete panel as well as nutritional panel to check for vitamin deficiencies.
Also did an iodine loading test after I read on this site that deficiency can cause dry mouth. Mine was 84% however lab tells me that this is quite impossible for someone who has never eaten seafood and does not take iodine supplementation to come back with such a decent score, that I must have some type of symporter issue with iodine absorption, to take iodine for 3 months and get retested.
OK, all that said. Here are my questions:
I've read Dr. Brownstein's book on the need for iodine. Will iodine work for me even if I do not take thyroid meds (if that is the cause of the dry mouth/digestion issues), and if so, what dose iodine should I be taking?
Does anyone have any insight or experience with that iodine symporter issue hindering absorption?
Could some type of bacteria in my intestinal tract, stomach or small intestine be causing all this discomfort and dry mouth? If so, how can I treat this?
Anyone who can lend some insight or alternate ideas will be most appreciated. Like I said, I am quite desperate for answers at this time."

Sjogren's Syndrome Remedies
06/20/2013: Sandi from Portland, Ct: "I am 51, was diagnosed w/ Sjogrens about 6-7 yrs ago. The side effects of the medications have kept me saying no, but now my body needs help. The doctor is saying to take the Rx, but then I found this site. Looking for any help out there. We have one support group over 40 mins away, and it's too hard for me to get there. There is just so much info out there and I want to start something/anything that will help me feel better. I'm scared right now. I have never felt this bad. Exhausted, sleeping 14-16 hrs a day, brain fog to beat the band, cold most of the time, joint pain in feet/ankles/knees and back pain. Thank you for reading. Email me if you want to chat further. Go to your local health food store or a small farmer's market or search on line for raw brands. Start slow - even at just taking 1 teaspoon and build up to like 1/2 cup 2 or 3 times a day. Search about the wonders of this food so rich in probiotics! I had oral thrush and dry eyes - and now both symptoms are relieved because of sauerkraut! It is a true miracle food - foods can heal!"
David from 07/22/2007: "First of all Ted, let me say what a blessing you are to so many people different people with so many desperate needs. May God richly bless you as you have given to so many others may you receive back many fold. I have been diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome as about 12 years ago. About 5 years ago my family and I moved to St. Petersburg from Rochester, NY in hopes of improving my auto-immune condition. It has improved to some degree, I'm guessing because of Vitamin D exposure to the sun. I've always had cold hands and feet, especially the feet. Anytime the temperature drops below 70 they get really cold (internally, not externally). I think I may have Raynaud's Syndrome as well. My feeling of fatigue and lack of energy has gotten quite a bit better due to a product I'm on called A_____ (glyconutrients). Recently I've developed what I thought were kidney stones, put as far as I know have yet to pass one. It seems if I do not drink an adequate amount of water I develop sharp pains on the right side of my lower back when urinating. Now I'm not certain if the pain in my back was from actually stones or a more serious kidney disorder. In addition when working outside for a long period of times and sweating, my back gets really itchy and breaks out in little raised sores which are not painful. I'm able to workout and run short distances (200 meters), but anything more than that my legs feel like lead weights. I'm currently taking the A_____ (670 mg once a day), a multivitamin, Ester C (2000 mg daily), EDTA for oral chelation (625 mg twice daily), Quercentin for prostate issues ( 500 mg twice a day) and maximum prostate (2 capsules daily) who's main ingredient is beta-sitoseterol (300 mg twice daily) and have just recently added ionic magnesium (300ppm - 1 tsp. a day.) Any advice or recommendations you can give me would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and your unselfish willingness to give back to others."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear David: Most auto immunity including the Sjogren's Syndrome can be handled if a more direct approach is taken (since you are taking exercise which tends to consume more bicarbonates and citrates) such as a simple 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day. A more effective remedy in reducing that is the 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid (or one whole lime about 8 teaspoon freshly squeezed plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda taken twice a day in 1/2 glass of water). Vitamin D3 of at least 5,000-10,000 i.u. and magnesium citrate 250 mg for 5 days out a week (has more magnesium than the ionic one) is quite helpful. I have seen auto immunity to reduce in many cases whenever it's summer and more sun. Initially I suspect that certain auto immunity is caused by a yet unidentified mycobacterium or mycoplasma which manifests itself similar to a fungus since antifungal remedy such as borax has good response if taken only briefly such as a month's period or two. The dose for men if I happened to be taking it to kill the mycoplasma (it seems they need large than a woman) is about 1/4 teaspoon of borax mixed in one liter of drinking water taken throughout the day, but in this case, perhaps once a week is enough due to being a bit more sensitive. The serum calcium should be reduced and most alkalizing remedy is done about 5 days out of a week. The back pain might be the lack of magnesium as ionic magnesium is insufficient in amount, so magnesium citrate (or magnesium gluconate, magnesium orotate, magnesium malate, magnesium chloride) 250 mg should generally be sufficient often 5 days out of a week and I think the body should have sufficient levels after a month.
While the glyconutrients is an important one, taken them forever, can be an expensive way (at least for me), however most of the glyconutrients can be found eating kelp and aloe vera. Most of the improvement I think is due to the chelation, where heavy metals are the prime cause and as a result, chlorella or chlorella/spirulina where I might take 4 or 5 days out a week should help.
The general weakness often indicates the fungus, or virus, which strips the body of energy and at least for me were helped mostly by taking some clove oil mixed or diluted in water, such as a drop well stirred in a glass of water. If in case some people find it hot than maybe just buy some clove spices and cinnamon spices and mixed them in food, or sprinkle them in a drinking water. The energy pick up should be relatively quick within about 30 minutes. This weaknesses can also be done that have seen to work is 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in one glass of water plus 3- 6 drops of 3% H2O2. Of course, if the baking soda were already taken during the morning hours, then just adding the 3-6 drops of 3% H2O2 were helpful for me. The effect lasts anywhere from 50 minutes to 2 hours and of course maybe the H2O2 is taken every hour until the microbes were destroyed. All the remedy I mentioned here is just the bare minimum necessary to reduce those microbes present.
In some cases impaired immune function such as auto immunity is due to the body's immune system are weak or overtaken by the mycobacterium which causes the body to attack itself, which really I think is due to the mycobacterium attaches to the cells. The iodine, supplements such as 5-10 mg of potassium iodide a day usually unglues them and prevent attachment. Of course a safer form is simply to do iodine foot painting once or twice a week or I would probably used them as a mouthwash about 4 drops of lugol's' solution or preferably colorless iodine once every morning.
I have also noticed the increased in energy level, besides the clove oil and magnesium, and alkalizing is the vitamin B complex which when I feel week would take about twice or three times a week until the weakness goes away.
Whichever the remedy I would use, I would generally take borax (small amount) initially for a month or two once a week as mentioned, then the baking soda at of 1/2 teaspoon for most of the week always. And generally if those are done, usually I have seen people to be able to live a normal life. Of course other supplements should also be considered too, such as zinc gluconate 50 mg taken for twice a week for a month's period to a maximum of two months so that the body's immunity should be raised so that it doesn't result in auto immunity Selenium helps, but i prefer the selenium yeasts (yeast are dead in supplement form so they are safe) 200 mcg, for a month's period is also helpful too. Raynaud's syndrome is mostly helped with vitamin B complex, by the way."Replies

Then at the end of 2011 I hit the other leg on a box and a new hole formed, the doctors at wound care have tried about ten differance medicine on me but nothing has worked. They have put the medication on than wrap my legs but the wrap cause pain and itching. Now I itch all the time and the itching is driving me up the wall, when any thing touches my lower legs I see stars that's how bad they hurt and I don't mean where the sores are I mean any where on my lower legs and then these water like blisters form and new holes start. Most of the time the smaller ones are just skin deep and heal but some are a little deeper and take there time healing but not the bigger ones there just will not heal.
