Post-Nasal Drip Remedies

Last Modified on Jun 21, 2014

Treatment of post-nasal drip is widely varied and includes such options as nasal cleansing using a neti pot as well as alkalizing formulas. While the most important consideration for treating this condition is identifying the underlying condition, many of these natural treatments offer relief from the condition whatever the cause. Natural options cleanse the sinuses and remove infection and bacteria causing the drip.

What is Post-Nasal Drip?

Post-nasal drip, also known as PND, is a condition characterized by the overproduction of mucus. The most common symptom is the presence of excess mucus running down the throat. Additional symptoms include hoarseness, sore throat and others. The condition is caused by a number of different factors including cold, flu, allergy, sinus infection and many others.

Natural Treatments for Post-Nasal Drip

While the causes of excess mucus production are widely varied, many cases of the condition can be treated effectively using similar natural treatments. Alkalizing formulas such as apple cider vinegar are effective options. Additionally, cayenne, garlic and other herbs offer relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural substance that kills germs and nourishes the body at the same time. The vinegar can be taken as a tonic, which works to cleanse the system and remove toxins from the inside out, healing a drip in the process. Another treatment option, however, is using the tonic as a nasal cleanse that is sucked in through the nose, drained through the sinuses and spit out of the mouth.

Cayenne

Cayenne is also an effective treatment for post-nasal drip. The capsaicin in cayenne functions to stimulate the production of mucus, thinning it out in the process. This process makes breathing easier and facilitates less dripping of the sinuses.

Garlic

Garlic is a potent herb that also has powerful antibiotic properties. This nutrient is effective in eliminating infection and alleviating congestion. Garlic can also eliminate inflammation that may be contributing to symptoms of PND.

Post-nasal drip is a condition of the mucus membranes of the sinuses, which causes the presence of a liquid dripping feeling down the back of the throat. While specific treatment of the condition depends on the cause of the problem, natural treatments offer relief whatever the cause.

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  07/21/2013: Coachbrs from Livingston, La.: "I really need some help, good advice. I am 51 very active in working out in the weight room/mountain bike riding. Today, I am upset! I popped a cough drop in my mouth for the purpose to prevent coughing in a very important board meeting. Within 15 sec. I was coughing, my sinuses flooded my dry nose and mucus in my throat! Needless to say, I had to leave. I coughed for 30min. trying to clear the junk out of my system. I have been working very hard over the past 5 days and the cough drop experience is very frustrating!!!

This is what I have been doing over the past 5 days. I changed my nutrition to follow a Candida diet plan. I started alkalizing formula (Lemon-Bicarbonate-Blackstrap molasses 2xday) Daily I sweated in hot tub 40 min. with epsom salt and ginger rubbed on my skin. Upon getting out of the hot tub, I put on sweats-hoody and sweat another 40min. (I tested my urine/saliva pH everyday; on day one my pH 6.25 today its 6.75) Yesterday, I started using the ACV. (2 TBSP sprinkle cayenne pepper in 8oz. Of water) I need to get well before school starts on August 7th. I also have dentist appointment to extract tooth on Thurs. 7-25-13. I need to get well.

I guess you are wondering why did I START these remedies... Background; I was sick 6 weeks with bronchitis. During the 3 different doc. visits, the doc. gave me 3 rounds of antibiotics, 2 steroid shots and codeine cough medicine. I never got completely well! On the 4th doc. visit, I was given meds. for vaginal yeast infection and acid reflux meds. I said, baloney!!! So I'm on a mission to heal myself by following these remedies. I am better after 5 days of doing all these remedies but I still have a constant sinus drip back throat, I cough crazy when the sinuses goes crazy, I had a sore throat but that's gone when I started ACV. I missed 5 days of working out to focus on getting well. I usually mountain bike a total of 100 miles per week and lift weight 2 days a week. Somebody please help me.

I will continues doing these remedies but I need to see more improvements. Please tell me if theres something else I need to do. CoachBRS."

The red flags for me was the mention of " rounds of antibiotics, 2 steroid shots, meds. For vaginal yeast infection and acid reflux meds". I was one of those people that had no idea the yeast, fungus and/or bacteria can totally turn your life upside down until it happened to me. After seeing 7 different doc's finally got some help from the co-author of the 27 year old book - The Yeast Syndrome. There are many Candida type diets out there but since I'm now a patient of Dr. Trowbridge's I will follow his protocol. I believe in the healing value of Blackstrap molasses but my thoughts are since it's totally loaded with sugar you more or less made all the other Candida remedies useless or canceled out. If you have any type of yeast problems you usually have to totally cut out sugar and most carbs during the first stage of the diet or it's useless (depending on whose opinion/diet you are following. Yeast can flourish in your sinus, nasal passages and mouth. I had no sinus issues but ended up with yeast spores living in my nose. I actually could see the very small yeast hyphea spores come out when I exhaled. I had no idea that I was this infected with yeast and some people don't until it really bad and takes a big toll on your health. There is no quick fix for this illness. You have got to fix your stomach flora and much more to get this gone & healed after all the meds you have been given. I know been there and still working on this issue that has made my life hell for the last nine months. This doctor has a website with free podcasts or you can get his ebook cheap from amazon. It's not a fun read but can save you lots of other health problems or maybe your life. I think he saved mine."

I ended up being a dirty and stinky, ignorant and ill mannered, mentally and emotionally disturbed homeless person sleeping on a piece of cardboard. I suffered from headaches, mouth ulcers, nightmares, high fevers, sore throats, heal spurs, and arthritis. Then I got lucky. I got a room and disability. I studied the way food affects cellular biology and the mechanisms of aging from naturopath doctors. I experimented with a variety of properly prepared products from reputable companies. I am completely cured. Every day I walk ten miles. I always have plenty of energy. I am going to tell you exactly what you must do to end up like me.

Put 4 oz. Organic baby spring mix, 4 oz. Organic straw berries, 100 grams organic sun dried cane sugar called sucanet or rapadura, 1 oz. Non gmo red miso, cayenne, and 2 tbls. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar into a blender with water and grind them up. Put that with more water into a 1 gallon container. Take 1 cup every hour. That is 16 cups a day. Every 4 hours take 1 tsp. Flax oil and 1 tsp. Coconut oil. That covers nutrients, carbs, and oils. Try to get some raw protein. You can get these items from the Grocery, Asian Market, Whole Foods, and Natural Grocery Stores. I am going to tell you other products you can study and take. I take them myself every day with 2 gallons of water. Raw honey, non denatured micro-filtered whey protein isolate, raw eggs from pastured hens, dead sea salt, raw fermented skate liver oil, nascent iodine, borax, water soluable humic acid, Hawaiian spirulina, thin celled wall chlorella, non-defatted desiccated liver, raw organic cocoa powder, freeze dried coconut water, Hawaiian cordeyceps, chia seeds, organic tomato paste, freeze dried acerola powder, and absorbable colostrum. You can get many of these items on the internet at wholesale prices. I eat 92% raw organic vegan and 8% raw grass fed animal products."

07/22/2013: Sami from Houston, Tx, Usa replies: "This is a PS to my post/reply from last night. There are too many supplements and treatments in the protocol I am following to list here. I forgot the most important in ref to your lung/bronc issues. The doctor has me put just a few drops of 3 % food grade hydrogen peroxide to start out with distilled water in a personal cool air mist humidifier. The little simple inexpensive unit but we cannot put commercial/brands type links on this sites. To get an idea or a picture just google - Travel size coll air humidifiers, they run aprox. $40 bucks. It must be a cool air mist not hot air. You start with just a few drops and use a few times a day and work your way up to a little stronger mix and more inhalation. Don't over do it but just start very slow and bump your dose up. I have not had any negative side effects and using this for over 2 month. My doctor also does intravenous drips with the hydrogen peroxide which helps so many viruses and illnesses but I'm not ready to try this just yet. It is very important to use only the 3 % food grade hydrogen peroxide and pure distilled water as you don't want the chemicals from tap water and the drug store brown bottle peroxide.

I don't post much and usually just read and learn. Until you get this under control the damage from all the antibiotics and other meds have lowered your immune system and many nasty things will thrive unless you cut out all the sugar and carbs. This is not a life time diet but important in the first stage of healing and can be added back slowly after some recovery. There are many types of candida/yeast type diets/protocols. Bill , Ted and others have many excellent posts on this very site. I just needed more guidance and confirmation of the disease because of other doctors wrong dianois and my family and friends not believing that my illness was yeast related. I'm glad I found a wonderful holistic/md in my area that is educated on this issue. Please read a book or some website info on just how badly yeast/mycosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycosis) can slowly ruin your health. I hate the idea of anyone experience the nightmare I and many others are suffering because of over use of antibiotics due to life saving surgeries or just now knowing any better at the time.

It's true if the illness does not kill you the medicines will kill you. But it's a long drawn out slow kill that causes much more suffering than the original illness."

To the point that it would become to irritated. When to Dr. of course the prescribe antibiotics like always. I took them and nothing, I went back and they prescribe a different, stonger antibiotic and nothing! I looked for a natural solution. Found the Neti pot it worked!! I did it in the morning and early evening. If you need more info google/ youtube Neti pot. Its pretty much a flusing of your nasal passages with sea salt water. Give it a try I'm sure it will work for you! I used the neti pot with Himalyan salt. If it works for you PROMISE to spread the word and also come to post it her on EC! :). Oh yea and not milk this makes phlem worst and also sugary and cold drinks. Warm soups and teas help to losen phlem and honey soothes the throat. Much love Sunny. EC rocks!!! <3"

Also you might need to do it for a longer time period. But I really belive this will cure you, if not at least help to improve it, but you have to keep at it tell you feel the difference , then you can try stopping.

Also now I use drinking water heated up to really warm. As I have been told about the floride in the sink water. You can use really pure salt, ( just salt, not with anticaking ingridients and iodine! ) or fine grain sea salt.

Other things I have found helpful.

Lemon or Lime honey tea ( boil water and add ingredients)

Troat drops ( not like halls) They are like different the ingredient is pectin read lable) ( look at back ing( its like moisturizing) ( (Since the clearing of throat causes irritation), not menthol.

Oregano tea, oregano pills

Past the love forward -Sunny"

Re: runny itchy nose...

Likely you have sinus infection. I have this happen often. I always immediately go to my stash of colloidal silver. Using an ear syringe I gently squirt into sinus ...both sides. Usually a stinging on one or both sides. Repeat ten minutes later. (No sting or nearly none.) With most virus infections (90 percent or so)...gone by second or third use. I use the CS up to four or five times in a few hours if necessary.

Can you get CS in Medina? CS is usually found at health food stores in the States.

You can get it shipped to you...not too helpful with your immediate problem but I always have a supply on hand when infections strike."

02/08/2014: Alex from Riverside, California: "Hello,

I am 69 years old and never had a sinus problem other than what one experiences with flu's and colds. I was told by my doctor to lose weight due to my high blood pressure so I lost quite a bit of weight. I was 210 lbs now I'm down to 170 lbs. I look great but the cold bothers me now that I got rid of the fat. In the cold I have to put on about 3 T-shirts under my shirt to stay warm.

My problem is this: I have developed Rhinitis! The cold air seems to cause

My sinuses to swell and my nose runs constantly I am miserable. When I sleep and place a sheet over my face and head my sinuses return to normal.

When I wake up the runny nose will start up again. I am thinking of buying a warm face mask to see if that helps? DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS I AM FINE!

If someone knows how to relieve this problem I would fully appreciate your help.

Thank you Earth clinic partners."

02/08/2014: Dave from Fountain Inn, Sc replies: "Hello Alex,

Great job losing the weight. And I, too, have experienced the effect of cold on nasal conditions...seems the cold makes worse.

I googled rhinitis and found a wiki article on the same; claims that such is caused by two items; virus and bacteria and then next, allergens.

On the first you might consider trying colloidal silver. I have a chronic sinus problem and have assumed it was allergen sensitivity but that very inflamed condition might be the set up for infection, so that over the years I've kept the sinus cavities reasonably free from infection with occasional irrigation with my home made CS.

On how to deal with allergens, I would like the magic cure on that one. Been looking for a long time. Let me know what you find out.

On your idea about warmth to help. That's a good idea. You might also consider, before bed, inhaling steam just to test the "warm" theory as impacting the condition."

02/09/2014: Jos from Thailand replies: "Hi there. Have you tried a thin smear of coconut oil or similar inside your nostrils? This helps my sinus problem but mine is caused by heat over here, the opposite to your cold air."
02/09/2014: Mama To Many from Tennessee, Usa replies: "Dear Alex,

Prioris mentioned cayenne for the rhinitis...it may also help the cold issue. You could start with 1/4 teaspoon in some juice a couple of times a day. It really does warm me up. If you want to take capsules, you just take 1 capsule 2-3 times a day, but I find taking capsules causes some heartburn whereas taking it in juice does not. (Tummies don't like surprises! )

I was hoping Dave would bring up CS for the rhinitis, which he did. I hadn't considered allergies, which he brought up as a possibility. If that is the case, nettles and quercetin may help. They helped my son a lot. He took 4 capsules of nettles and one of quercetin twice a day. If his nose got to running, he would take a dose mid-day as well. After a year, he no longer needed them, except perhaps once in a while.

Congratulations on your weight loss! If part of your weight loss has been by cutting way back on fat consumption, that can cause coldness. I wouldn't want you to lose the ground you have gained. (or lost?) but if you have cut way back, and coconut oil would be compatible with your diet, that might help some. (Coconut oil is often used for weight loss.)

If you would like to share how you lost your weight, I am sure lots of us on Earth Clinic would love to hear what you did! Thanks!

Keep us posted!

02/09/2014: Prioris from Fl replies: "Fungal infection had been implicated by Mayo Clinic in Chronic Rhino sinusitis in 1999. Ted mentioned that fungus is implicated in asthma. He mentioned using lugol's iodine for that. Find his very recent post today. A recent study has also pointed to asthma being related to fungal colonies. So you may want to consider the problem from a fungal perspective also."

02/12/2014: Prioris from Fl replies: "if you take 4 drops of 2% or 2 drops of 4%, it would be the same. So percentage seems irrelevant. I think your question needs to be rephrased to - number of drops, percentage, how many times a day and for how long. If someone doesn't answer, I would look at candida protocols for clues."

03/22/2010: Maria from Wilmington, De: "About 6 months ago I had a terrible case of acid reflux. After many visits and phone calls my dr sent me to an ENT doctor. 12/21/2010: Self from Ny replies: "Colds/flu/respiratory infections/sinusitis, dehydration, allergies, acid reflux, hormonal imbalance (e.g. Excess estrogen from the pill) can all cause post nasal drip.

1. Drink plenty of water (dechlorinated and defluoridated). This will help dissolve mucous and flush it from the body.

2. Keep the air hydrated. Use a humidifier.

3. Avoid mucous causing and acidic foods. This means stick to fresh vegetables, some legumes and whole grains, a little fruit and seeds. Dairy, meats and many processed foods are mucous causing and acidic.

4. Alkalize the body. Most people are acidic from bad diet and stress. Two to three times a day, on an empty stomach (morning and an 1-2 hrs before sleep), add 1/4 tspn of baking soda to 2 tspns (you can build up to 2 tblspns) of raw organic apple cider vinegar. After it stops fizzing, add one cup of water. Give yourself a couple days off each week, from this. This will also help dissolve the mucous and if the PND is caused by acid reflux, this remedy will also help that as well.

5. Gargle with sea salt water. Mix 1/2 tbspn sea salt with 1 cup of water and gargle as needed.

6. Use sea salt nasal irrigation. Mix 1 tspn of sea salt in 1 cup of water (you can also add a pinch of baking soda) into a neti pot or a nose syringe or small aerosol pump spray for the nose.

[If "Using a syringe, tip your head back and fill one side of your nose up with the mixture. You have to close off the back of your throat with your tongue to prevent choking on it. Move your head around so that the mixture goes into your sinus cavities, then bring your head forward so that the water runs out. Blow your nose gently to remove the excess. Repeat several times for each nostril and continue to do it at least three times a day. This will help flush away any allergens or toxins that are causing excess mucous. "

If using a neti pot, here is an example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8sDIbRAXlg

7. Try some raw honey and lemon in a warm tea. This will help with drainage.

8. Get an allergy test done to see what you may be allergic too (e.g. Pets, clothing material, detergents, foods, dust, etc).

9. If the PND is thick yellow or green, it means infection. You can check this link for natural antibiotics http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/natural_antibiotics.html
If it gets really bad, consult a naturopathic doctor. Give this protocol a little time."

12/21/2012: Tom from Seneca, Sc replies: "PND is very often caused by an infection way back in sinus cavity or in ears running down eustation tubes.

Two good remedies: First try a solution of salt dissolved in water. Use an ear syringe and squirt into sinus cavity. Also irrigate ear canals with the solution. My brother in law keeps a container in his shower and uses this every morning as a saline irrigation to keep his sinuses clear.

If that doesn't work, try colloidal silver. I often get sinus infections that have that PND aspect. Silver works every time. CS is astonishingly effective."
