Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Remedies

Last Modified on Jun 21, 2014

Treatments for pelvic inflammatory disease involve options that both eliminate the symptoms of the condition as well as the cause. A variety of natural supplements are able to accomplish both of these measures with no adverse effect on the rest of the body. Common treatments include baking soda, garlic, turmeric and others.

What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

An infection of the female reproductive organs, pelvic inflammatory disease is typically caused by sexually transmitted bacteria. Bacteria typically spreads from the vagina to the uterus and upper genital tract upon sexual contact.

While some women experience no symptoms of the condition, others may experience pain in the lower abdomen, heavy vaginal discharge, vaginal odor, irregular menstrual bleeding, pain during intercourse, low back pain, fever, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting. Several factors may contribute to the onset of the condition. Unprotected sexual intercourse, intrauterine device insertion, childbirth, miscarriage, abortion and an endometrial biopsy may introduce bacteria into the system that can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease.

Natural Remedies for Pelvic Inflammation

As pelvic inflammatory disease is generally caused by infection, treatments must serve dual purposes – eliminating infection as well as inflammation. Many natural treatment options effectively treat the condition and prevent further complications from the disorder. Some of the most common treatments include baking soda, garlic and turmeric.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an effective treatment option for a variety of conditions including pelvic inflammatory disease. Baking powder alkalizes the colon and other organs of the body, which serves to eliminate infection and other parasites. Baking soda dissolved in water should be taken daily.

Garlic is an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. The organo-sulfur compounds in garlic are effective for destroying bacterial cells. Likewise, the diallyl sulfide in garlic serves antibacterial and anti-inflammatory purposes. .

Turmeric is also an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compound. The curcumin in turmeric serves these functions and produce relief from the condition. The compound also includes a variety of other beneficial nutrients.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the female productive organs typically caused by bacteria. When treated effectively, complications of the condition can be prevented as can any symptoms present.

Baking Soda

02/15/2012: Anon from Anon: "Get a tall glass, half full of water, disolve 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking SODA, not powder) in it, put in a heaping teaspoon of psyllium fiber for bulk, stir up good and drink right away. When the psyllium gets to the colon it alkalizes it."

[YEA]  12/25/2006: Anonymous from New Zealand: "I was diagnosed with an inflammed pelvic caused by an unknown source. numerous trips to the doctor and painful examinations, and several courses of antibiotics did nothing for me. I looked up on the internet and found that dong quai is a great womans herb. I bought some as a tea and drank copious amounts and within a few days i could feel a change, and within a week I felt no pain and was enjoying pain free sex again. Dong Quai is apparently great for lots of womens problems"

03/07/2009: Melissa from San Fernando, Trinidad replies: "Do you happen to know if the Dong Quai pills work as good as the tea...Where did you get the tea to buy? I also have PID and they can't seem to find the bacteria that is causing it...."
[YEA]  06/08/2009: Mtnwmn from Craig, Colorado replies: "I too suffer from PID. I started taking Dong Quai Capsules (520mg - 2 capsules 2-3 times a day). Within a week or so I felt no symptoms of PID. Not being sure of the side effects from prolonged use, I went off of it for 2 mo. I am restarting my dosage again now that symtoms are reoccurring."

12/10/2012: Kmama from Beaverton, Or: "Fenugreek as a poultice/paste on the pelvic region almost immediately relieved the inflammation and ache. I used the powder capsule form, took apart the capsules (5-8) and added a bit of hot water to make a paste. Slathered it on the area and left it there for a bit over half an hour. I even felt tension leave my lower back. I'm doing this in conjunction with dong quai. Will update soon with more feedback. Just felt the need to post about fenugreek since it worked so well and quickly to alleviate a pain that had woke me up several times last night. Going to put on my lymph areas near the pelvic region tomorrow as they say fenugreek helps to detox thru the lymph glands."

[YEA]  02/15/2012: Anon from Anon: "If you're female, take a largish clove of garlic, crush and split it somewhat lengthwise to form a cavity, drop 2 or 3 drops of oregano oil into it and push it inside the vagina to the back so it doesn't fall out. Be careful not to spill the oil. It will burn a bit, but the burn goes away in a few minutes. Leave it in for a day or two at a time."

[YEA]  08/08/2013: Earthlygirl from Ohio: "This is how I made my Pelvic Inflammatory Disease go away, take organic garlic, thyme & whole lemon. Cut up the garlic squeeze the lemon & put everything all together into a pot or teapot. That will turn it into a tea. I usually like to add green & white tea to it as well & that's what I did but you don't have to because if you look up the fact about garlic, lemon, thyme you'll notice they either have omega 3 and anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial and great for fighting fungus infections ; treating everything the natural way. "WORKS"!! The first day drink this tea the pain with go away 30 minutes later and you should not experience any problems :) Drink this tea 2 to 3 times a day for two weeks or less. "EVERY BODY IS DIFFERENT" but this REALLY helped me out big time. I don't know if this treatment will work for everyone but it worked for me & I'm free of pelvic pain, discharge and bad odor."

Remedies Needed

02/16/2014: Mirjam from India: "Hi I'm suffering from a uturus infection. + there is liquid in the pelvic. I have it since a while. I have so much pain. And my imune system is down. I have tried all kind of medicines also antibiotics. But nothing has helped. Please if you have any advise let me know. Thank you"

02/16/2014: Mama To Many from Tennessee, Usa replies: "Dear Mirjam,

I am so sorry about this infection and pain!

Shonda Parker, an herbalist, recommends the following for uterine infection.

Echinacea - 500 - 1,000 mg every two hours during the day.

Astragalus - 500 - 1,000 mg every two hours during the day.

Vitamin C - 1,000 mg every two hours.

The above would support the immune system which you say is weak. If you can get some milk kefir to drink daily that would help, too. Plenty of fruits and vegetables would be helpful.

I would also use 1 teaspoon of turmeric in some milk (or in milk kefir) three times a day.

1 clove fresh garlic 4 times a day would be wonderful as a natural anti-biotic.

Activated Charcoal has been used successfully to treat uterine infections. If you can get charcoal tablets, you can insert 4 tablets vaginally at bedtime. (Wear a pad as it will leak and possible stain because it is black.) You can also make a charcoal poultice and put it on your abdomen over the pained area. This will help draw out the infection and help with the pain. You can use these overnight. You can also use this for a couple of hours during the day to help with pain. Here is how to make a charcoal poultice (may need to scroll half way down the page.)

Please keep us posted. I hope you are better soon!

08/15/2012: Daphne from Springs, South Africa. replies: "Hi, I have PID and when from antibiotics to 23 tabs a day of medications nothing worked for me. The thing is antibiotics tend to take all the good bacteria from your body and you don't replace them so every time you get a new course of antibiotics you just take another step down. I hear of a place name the SOQI wellness centre you can go read about it on the internet. I started my natural course of OMEGA 48 and Enzymes (go read anout the products as well) and I must tell IT WORKS!!! No more docters no more pain no more antibiotics I FEEL GREAT!!! Just try it."

Swedish Bitters

01/18/2012: Anon from Anon: "Not sure if it's PID, but it seems to be. Swedish Bitters seems to be working best, haven't gone to the Dr. for it. 1 or 2 teaspoons with a meal, bottle says 1 or 2 teaspoons once per day."

01/20/2012: Anon from Anon replies: "The dossage is upped to 2 teaspoons 3 times a day w/ food. Salad and fresh fruit seem best foods to take it with. Added raw beets 1 a day, and 2 or 3 garlic cloves. Been sick for years, finally after about 4 days much better. Always been run down, tired, achy, sugar issues, can't take milk or wheat, started getting lower leg pain and vericose veins, started getting sharp abdominal pain. That's when I started the bitters. I knew it was an infection because years ago on Azithromycin it was much better."
