Nausea Remedies
"Nausea is not a sickness, but rather a symptom of several conditions, many of which are not related to the stomach. Nausea is often indicative of an underlying condition elsewhere in the body. Travel sickness, which is due to confusion between perceived movement and actual movement, is an example. The sense of equilibrium lies in the ear and works together with eyesight. When these two don't "agree" to what extent the body is actually moving the symptom is presented as nausea even though the stomach itself has nothing to do with the situation. Nausea is also an adverse effect of many drugs. Nausea may also be an effect of a large intake of sugary foods.
In medicine, nausea can be a problem during some chemotherapy regimens and following general anaesthesia. Nausea is also a common symptom of pregnancy, in which it is called "morning sickness". Mild nausea experienced during pregnancy can be normal, and should not be considered an immediate cause for alarm." (Wikipedia)

[YEA] 06/22/2009: CherylT from Houston, TX: "Nausea Cure: I have had a few surgeries in the past 20 years and each time I would wake from the anesthesia I would be extremely nauseous. Vomiting after surgery is never a pleasant experience. Last year I underwent 3 treatments in as many days from my chiropractor, Manipulation Under Anesthesia. I wasn't thrilled at the thought of waking up 3 days in a row and vomiting post anesthesia. On the second day as they were wheeling me out to my waiting daughter the nurse saw me turning green and she handed me an alcohol packet. She tore it open and said sniff this. I could barely comprehend but I did sniff and it was amazing. The urge to be sick left me immediately. She sent several more of those little packets home with me for the long drive back to my house and I did not get sick once. This was a first for me to not vomit post surgery. I haven't tried it for any other types of nausea or motion sickness, only after anesthesia but it's worth a try if you are nauseated for whatever reason."
RepliesEC: Alcohol packet = alcohol swabs sold in drugstores (wound care section) ,which contain 70% isopropyl alcohol. If you mean something else, please let us know!
[YEA] 07/07/2009: Diandra from Jacksonville, FL replies: "I tried this immediately after reading the suggestion and my nausea vanished. I was just about to call into work sick. Thanks."
07/07/2009: Janice from Coloma, Mi replies: "Diandra, what was it that caused your nausea?"
07/21/2009: Diandra from Jacksonville, FL replies: "I have no idea. For a few days I got nauseous every time I ate. It eventually went away."
[YEA] 02/17/2010: Sherri from Indianapolis, Indiana, Usa replies: "I developed nausea about 1.5 hours after eating dinner and tried using the alcohol swab suggestion after reading it. I had immediate relief of what I thought was going to turn into a lot more than just the nausea. I feel 100% better now. I love this site."
[YEA] 03/12/2010: Mary from Chantilly, Va replies: "I was fascinated to come across this post as I just had surgery last week, and became very nauseated afterwards. My sweet nurse put an ice pack on my neck and gave me the alcohol swap packet to sniff because she said it helps lots of people. I couldn't believe how well it squelched the waves of nausea!"
[YEA] 05/02/2010: Erin from Naperville, Illinois replies: "Wow, can't believe how fast this works! My daughter was complaining of nausea tonight and I read about this on EC. We didn't have any alcohol swabs, so I just poured some rubbing alcohol into a small cup and let her sniff it. She said she felt better almost immediately! Thank you!"
[YEA] 07/13/2010: Sammy from Studio City, Ca, Usa replies: "This really works! I recently had surgery and was prescribed painkillers to help ease the discomfort. I've been able to get by without taking them for a week now, but last night my pain was unbearable so I decided to take half of the pill. Well, about an hour after I took it, I became incredibly nauseous. I ended up vomiting a couple times which I thought would help make me feel better because it usually does, but I still felt nauseous. So when I could finally get myself to the computer, I went to this website for a remedy. When I saw alcohol packets help, I grabbed one from my medicine cabinet, opened it up and began sniffing it. You would think that sniffing alcohol would make the nausea worse, which is to say that it didn't exactly feel good to inhale that first sniff, but after a minute or two, my queasiness subsided. I couldn't believe it. This will definitely be my go to nausea remedy from now on! "
[YEA] 09/04/2010: Philestewart from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania replies: "I am currently sitting in my bathroom feeling very nauseated, I came across this post and grabbed the rubbing alcohol out of my medicine cabinet. I just took a big sniff of it and felt immediate relief. I still feel a little sick but I definitely feel much better."
01/16/2011: Kristie from Peoria, Illinois replies: "I've been suffering from nausea and vomitting all day from a hangover and was desperate for help. I tried the alcohol swabs and while it didn't entirelly cure my nausea, it helped immensely. Thank you."
05/29/2011: Hunter from Nashville, Tn replies: "When you take a sniff of the alcohol, it numbs the nerve that controls the stomach. Remember that this is only temporary. If you have to use these more than once, you should probably go to a doctor."
[YEA] 08/02/2011: Kristina from Franklin, Tn replies: "I don't know why, but for the past couple of days my stomach has just been so queazy. So this morning I decided to look up remedies. I read all the comments on this one and tried it. At first I didn't think it was going to work and then out of the blue I realized I felt fine. It really does work and I'm gonna carry these in my purse today:)"
[YEA] 01/24/2012: Angelajd from Baton Rouge, La replies: "OMG Thank you all for recomending the AS I take meds that makes me nausea sometimes and could not figure out what to take to elimante the feeling but one sniff on the alcohol pad really was amazing!! My little sis is preggo now and I will def pass this news to her Im sure AS shouldnt be harmful to her huh? just a whiff and its gone!"
[YEA] 05/21/2012: Matt from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada replies: "Awesome trick, I was using pop which works good you would still feel a little bit nauseous but this alcohol trick- holy cow my nausea is completely gone and I have the onset of a tummy flu where you are supposed to throw up lol. thank you so much I hate throwing up so much lol."

[YEA] 04/12/2008: Ali from Orlando, Florida: "I had been a bit drained and tired all day. About an hour ago I was shakey, a bit nauseous and weak. I sent my bf out to get me some apple juice. The moment I had 1 cup of apple juice and 2 TBL spoons of ACV, i felt INSTANT relief. I was definitely not expecting it. My bf had food poisoning or some kind of stomach bug over the past day and I was scared I might get it too. I went ahead and took the concoction and I feel fine besides the heartburn which will reside in a few minutes. I dont have as much gas in my stomach and my shakiness has lessened. :) I hope I had enough liquid with the ACV since this is my first time trying it."

[YEA] 12/06/2007: Laura from Orlando, FL: "About 6 months ago, I suddenly woke up with severe nausea and constant burping. Everything I ate and drank made me feel sick. I woke up nautious and went to bed nat ious every day. My quality of life started changing. I did not want to go out anymore and do things because I constantly felt sick. Being newly engaged, this really put a damper on my relationship. Who wants to be around someone that feels sick everyday and to be honest..when you are sick everyday you reach a point where you just want to be alone. I am only 27 years old and I felt like I had put on 10 years or more in the last 6 months. I even told my mother if I had to live the rest of my life like this I might kill myself. Everything made me sick. Even riding in a car. I had a colonoscopy which came back fine. I then had a scope done and showed that I had erosions all in my stomach, throat, and esophogas. I have been on prevacid and aciphex, which did not seem to help at all and the constant burping was just nasty and embarrassing. I got online and found this site and figured I would give the ACV a chance. This is only my 4th day and oh my goodness thank you god!!! I am not nauseous anymore. Riding in a car no longer makes me sick. If I burp it is one good one instead of a million tiny ones and I have energy like I haven't had in years. I have lost 3 pounds in a few days and I am not having bad cravings. I also notice my skin looks better. I also have battled depression for a long time and I actually feel happy. I woke up at 4a.m smiling thinking why am I so happy. This is truley amazing and I can't wait to keep taking it and see what else it does. If you have battled acid reflux believe me I know how horrible it is. Please just try this and you will not regret it!!!"
Replies11/27/2009: Ken from Waldorf, Maryland replies: "I just had gallbladder surgery almost two months ago. I suffer from nausea, stomach aches and irregularity--to include diarrhea--referred to as "dumping." Seems like anything I eat, I feel nausea, stomach ache, gas, bloating, etc. I am willing to try apple cider vinegar.Question: How much should I try everyday and at what dosage? I've read where some people have drank a half glass of water with two teaspoons of water; but how many times a day? Any suggestions? Some people have taken apple cider with baking soda. Should I try both? I really could use someone's recommendations. My life has really changed since my surgery...for the bad more than for the good; I don't want the stomach doctor giving hooked on prescriptions that may or may not help my condition."
11/28/2009: Phil from Dearing, Ga, USA replies: "Hi Ken. My wife had her gallbladder removed about 4 years ago. She sometimes suffers, what is similar to gallbladder attacks. It has been said somewhere, that people still get stones in their BILE DUCTS after the gallbladder has been removed. What we do for her is a shot glass or 2 tablespoons of raw applecider vinegar/ unfiltered in a glass ( 8oz ) of room temperature apple juice. She will down this and the pain and nausea is gone pretty fast. She just does this when ever she has pain or bad nausea.
You may also want to consider charcoal tablets as they are suppose to help with all kinds of stomach issues...Gas, bloating and nausea.
And I know this is not a natural remedy and I do still have my gallbladder, but when I have severe nausea...I take motion sickness pills and it goes away quickly.
Hope this helps."

[YEA] 02/01/2009: Christy from Henderson, KY: "I have been sick for the past few days with a stomach bug and sinus infection. I have been using steam to loosen the sinus' up and it has worked well along with the antibiotics; then the stomach bug sat in and I started vomiting non stop with nausea so bad I couldn't stand up or move to fast w/o vomiting.
I tried all the remedies on here for nausea (ACV, cold washcloths, baking soda) I even tried Pepto, and they all caused to to puke more. After having nothing to eat or drink (held down anyway) for over 4hrs, I went into the kitchen and got out cold organic applesauce, and started eating small spoonfuls and within 30 mins, my nausea stopped; and I haven't puked since. I ate about a tsp every 5 mins or so for 30 mins.
I dunno if it is just the antibiotics finally starting to work, or if the applesauce REALLY did work, but either way; I thought I would pass this on, since I remember my Mom making me eat it when I was sick and it made me feel better; and thought it would be good for kiddos, and people that the other things didn't work for.
Thanks again for the great ideas and remedies Earth Clinic!"
[YEA] 05/07/2012: Treed from Cambridge, Ohio replies: "I am 7 weeks into my 3rd pregnancy and got on here to look up remedies for my nausea. When I saw applesauce it reminded me that I used to eat a tablespoon of it everyday when I felt nauseous with my last baby! So, thanks for the reminder, now I have to go get some LOL."

[YEA] 04/30/2009: Liz from Melbourne, Florida USA: "I have been dealing with SEVERE nausea since starting chemo treatments for leukemia in 2005. I stopped all chemo meds in 2006 but the nausea has stuck around since then. I have tried EVERYTHING that the doctors have given me. I finally got tired of putting chemicals into my body and started searching for natural remedies. I found this website through a cancer community and it has been a GODSENT! I tried the baking soda for nausea and within 5 minutes, my nausea is almost completely gone. It would have taken Phenegren over an hour to help. Thanks SO much for this website!"
Replies[YEA] 03/12/2011: Donna Mae from Clovis, Nm replies: "Thank you so much! I wish I had read this two days ago. I have been battling a head cold along with puking and pooping. I have two babies, an 8 month old and a 23 month old, which were the source of my illness, and my husband is gone for a couple of weeks. I thought I had gotten too dehydrated because I wasn't being able to even sip water without having a gag reflex. I was about to send them to a babysitter and check myself into the emergency room to get an IV because I've gotten so weak and was afraid I would not be able to care for my little ones. I put 1/8 tsp of baking soda in a mug and added warm water as recommended. I felt better within five minutes as promised. I am now able to drink water with no issues. Thank you so much... I was really worried."

[YEA] 10/10/2008: Cory from West Hurley, NY replies: "I usually add 1/8 teaspoon to half a glass of water and take small sips you should feel better within 5 minutes or so. Make sure the baking sooda is completely diluted and mixed well before drinking...Hope this helps."
[YEA] 11/23/2008: Luba from Toronto, Canada replies: "it worked right away for me!! i had a horrible nausea the whole day and finally tried some baking soda in a glass of water. instant relief!"
[YEA] 01/26/2011: Romanbreeze from Sugarcreek, Ohio Usa replies: "My grandma had used this remedy in her house for decades. I still use it to this day. I use a shot glass and put enough baking soda in it to cover the bottom of glass, add some room temperature water, stir, plug my nose and take my shot of baking soda. I have found it works if I ate something that didn't agree with me, but not when I had the flu. I just found out that I am pregnant so I'm sure I will find out soon if it works for morning sickness, as long as it's safe for baby. :-)"

BITTERS
Ratings:

[YEA] 08/08/2009: Pmstar from San Diego, Ca: "Bartenders Cure for Nausea: Bitters stops nausea quickly. Bitters is used on most bars to make Manhattans. About 10 drops of bitters in a small glass of 7 up or ginger ale will settle even the worst naseau. Just sip it. You can buy Bitters in a liquor store or grocery store that sells alcohol. The best part about knowing this little trick is that its available when you are out for the evening so no need to suffer or go home. Just ask the bartender for a little bitters and 7-up.
Bitters also stops hiccups on contact. A little straight Bitters in your mouth will stop it dead. If you're out its usually sprinkled on a lime or orange to make it tolerable and you simply suck it off the lime. Hiccups are gone.
I'm not a drinker but my friends are and if I go out for the night they harrass me for not drinking. I simply order Bitters and 7up in a rock glass and it looks like I'm drinking a mixed drink and no one feels a need to talk me into having a drink. It tastes good - kind of like a sweet spiced ice tea.

11/14/2009: Tamsin from Normal, Il replies: "It's also really good for indigestion. A true friend to expectant mothers, what with the morning sickness and heartburn that can occur!"
[WARNING!] 11/24/2009: Sally_oh from Escazú, San José, Costa Rica replies: "Bitters are 44% alcohol. Good for what ails you, great for indigestion and a few other things (wiki it), but it is an alcoholic beverage. When I first quit drinking, I used to have a little in a glass of soda. I was informed by sober friends this is not kosher. Just a head's up."
01/05/2010: Pmstar from San Diego, Us replies: "Yes Bitters does contain alcohol - about the same as vanilla extract but a few drops does not add up to enough to be concerned about unless of course you are an alcoholic and it might trigger a craving."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 02/08/2009: A.O. : "Hello. I have a 10 y.o. who has been suffering from nausea but more like dry heaves at least once a week early in the mornings.. He would start yawning a few times and would start throwing up spit and liquid only. Well, a few times with food from the night before but not as much. He used to take Trileptal for seizure but stopped for more than a month now. Our family doctor doesn't see anything wrong with him because he's had blood and urine tests and they always come back normal now that he stopped taking Trileptal. We are just now waiting for a referral to a Gastroenterologist. In the meantime, would you have an idea why this is happening? Thank you."
Replies02/16/2009: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "I used to have the same thing happen to me when I was younger. I would also have hives. I feel sorry for your child, as I know how painful it can be. I would suggest food/environmental allergies. Check out the GAPS diet. It is a diet based on healing your insides and helping to cure all sorts of ailments. Food allergies could be the root of many the health problems."
10/03/2009: Carol from Pahrump, Nv replies: "For the person with the 10 year old child who would wake up at night and yawn, then vomit, here is some information I saw on a medical program. You don't say why he was taking a medication for seizure, but the child on the program had the same symptoms. After all the tests were done it turned out she had epilepsy and the yawning and vomiting were a signal from her brain that an epileptic attack was beginning, and they were the only seizure symptoms she had. It was very unusual. She would experience these symptoms often and only during the night when she had been sleeping. It really sounds like your little boy has the same disorder, epilepsy."

[YEA] 11/06/2008: Tobey from Bellingham, WA USA: "Ginger cures nausea. Fresh ginger, peeled then chopped or grated, any amount; then boiled or boiled water poured over it in a cup. Also, most health food stores and some food stores sell bagged ginger tea to make a cup. You can add sweetener if you please. Also ginger ale, crystallized ginger and sometimes even ginger cookies.
I get nauseous a lot, and I swear by crystallized ginger after eating, especially if I feel bloated or ate too much. In Ayurvedic medicine, 500 year old East Indian medicine, they believe that ginger fires up the internal digestive fire.
Ginger is very good for cancer patients and AIDs patients, cause they get nausea a lot. I've suggested it to many friend and they say it worked for them
Other cures I've used for nausea (they do not have to be used together) are:
a warm hot water bottle, wrapped on my abdomen.
peppermint tea
Good luck"

HOMEOPATHICS
04/02/2011: Caitlin from Burlington, Vermont, Usa: "I am a young college student who has been having some strange symptoms over the past week including; nausea, organ tremoring, intense fear of death, painful headache on the right side of my head, feeling like bugs crawling up and down my leg, pain on the right leg all the way from my sacrum to knees to toes, an odd rash that a doctor told me was fungal but wont go away with the topical treatments, and restlessness/anxiety especially at night. I thought maybe I had candida or toxic shock but this is not so.
I have been trying to detox for the past 3 weeks using designs for health and opticleanse ghi drinks (though innaccurately folllowed as I was having too many shakes and too many of the wrong foods -- even though they were seemingly the right ones I. E. Dates, honey, nuts, seeds). My above listed symptoms lead me to contact the nutritionist who recomended the diet and she pointed out I was really not detoxing the right way. So I've been in a nutshell researching ways to recover while fearing that in any given moment my body could go into toxic shock... fortunately this has not happened yet and I am certain it will not happen.
SO... last night I ate some of the wrong foods again (now im just eating simple foods to get off the detox -- college detoxing is somewhat difficult) but they seemingly could be the right ones; I. E. Eggplant, tomatoes, salt, raw miso. AND I ate late at night. So I woke up feeling exhausted, super nauseas, super congested in my belly, and I thought holy shit I might vomit or die.
So I grabbed 3 pellets of Arsenicum Album, a remedy I recently bought under suggestion by a homeopathist. Arsenicum Album says its for food poisoning, but its really for bad food combinations, anxiety/exhaustion, neediness in case the Arsenicum person may die or get sick (I was calling everyone who could help me, which lead me to here).
So an hour after taking this I am already feeling much better. Nausea is gone, belly still sensitive and gassy, but I feel like my body is clearing. I will be taking a second dose in an hour and a half if these remaining symptoms are still here. I will also be eating simple foods like miso soup for the rest of the day."

Just add 1/4 tsp. of ground ginger to l pound of dry beans when cooking them to avoid the usual gaseous (flatulencne) problems associated with them. Since it works so well for the beans I suspect it should prevent flatulence from other foods."
04/17/2009: Gean from Salina, KS replies: "I have had motion sickness since I was a young child, and I noticed that a few years ago when I began taking barley grass juice tablets (I was taking AIM barley green, 6 caplets twice a day, at least 1/2 hr. before meals), I could suddenly read in the car and never get car sick. I realized that motion sickness is probably due to some kind of nutritional/hormonal imbalance which was corrected by the barley grass. Be aware that powdered barley grass is a lot less potent than powdered barley grass juice. Our whole family came down with a bad flu when we started on it, (healing crisis). Can be avoided by starting slow."
04/17/2009: Robin from Rural, VA replies: "About the accupressure band... I purchased a set of bands called "SeaBand" from a large chain drugstore about 9 years ago. At the time I used them for morning sickness, but you can tell by the name that it is intended for motion sickness. I wore them practically the entire time I was pregnant, and my morning sickness was minimal. I hope this helps."
EC: Yes, most drugstores carry them -- easy to find.
04/18/2009: Lon from Stanhope, Nj replies: "All of the suggestions mentioned have helped me. Ginger is great. One of the best helps I've tried, both to prevent and also to relieve motion sickness is to carry something very fizzy to sip on when I travel, such as seltzer water. Baking soda in water helps too, but i'm not sure how long the fizziness lasts once mixed. These make you burp and that seems to end the sickness at least for me."
04/18/2009: M from Oz, Ks, USA replies: "If you are not pregnant, ginger may help. google ginger! Wishing you well!"
[YEA] 04/19/2009: Vinita from Hyderabad, India replies: "Motion sickness remedies feedback: Thanks everyone for your replies. I will try taking ginger the next time I travel. Thanks once again!"
06/23/2009: Khulood from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates replies: "Best thing I've tried for motion sickness was ginger (in any form) I'd usually have a can of ginger ale when I'm on the move. It helps avoid nausea all together (for me at least). You could also try cold ginger tea : cut a few chunks of garlic, boil in a cup of water, take out the chunks, sweeten with honey if you want (just a bit because for some reason, honey aggravates my nausea), let it cool in the fridge and drink :)"
06/25/2009: Tanya from Osburn, Idaho replies: "I have used ginger for nausea or motion sickness. This worked very well for us. I think I would take a couple of capsules at a time. This also worked very well for my step daughter. Every time my step daughter would get into a moving vehicle, she would vomit. Taking ginger before a trip worked wonders. See if this works for you.
Tanya"
08/08/2009: Vinita from Hyderabad, India replies: "I happened to travel last week in a car. I took ginger with me but it didn't help me at all. I vomited as uaual. My sister told me about a remedy which I happened to take during the return journey. It worked wonders, I didn't feel anything. And it was the first time that I actually enjoyed a car journey.
The remedy:
Mix 2 to 3 tablesppons of honey in a glass of cool water. And add two pinches of salt.
Thats it. I drank this before the journey. In fact, I prepared a whole bottle of this drink and took it with me during the journey. It really works!!!"

A week prior to my flight out, I acclimated myself with about ten minutes swinging on the children's rig daily. All went well as I first fell asleep for a good while, then I was awaken by my mates for a view of Mt McKinley and without any sickness on a Cessna 210 was very fine."
01/12/2012: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Debbie, Ginger tablets are brilliant but the secret is to take them 30 mins before boarding. I see no reason why you could not take fresh or powdered ginger. Some comercial opperators on boats offer ginger tablets on boarding. These help some but for most people it works best if taken 30 mins before you board. You can top up with them onboard. I forget the recommended intervals but you do need to take them more than just the initial dose."
