[YEA] 08/12/2008: CD from Cincinnati, Ohio writes: "COQ10 & Riboflavin for Migraine:
I was really happy to see this site! I didn't see anything about these 2 supplements. My son has been suffering with migraines now for a year and 1/2 and we have seen a host of specialists. His neurologist ran a blood test to test for these 2 nutient levels because he said they actually help prevent migraines. My sons levels were extremely low. I just wanted to post this as a great migraine preventative. We have definitly seen an improvement."

COFFEE WITH A FEW DROPS OF LEMON

[YEA] 11/06/2006: Vanessa from Lisbon, Portugal writes: "I started suffering from migraines a few years ago and I had tried almost all natural cures I found in books, sites (I tried almost all cures listed in this site) etc.. I was desperate the migraines were getting worst there were days I could not even got up from bed. While visiting my grandma I mentioned the migraines and she told me to try coffee with a few drops of lemon. Since I don't like coffee and had tried almost everything I thought it wasn't something as simple as a cup of coffee that would make me feel better. One day I was so desperate that I remind that and thought I had nothing to lose trying it. I drank a cup of coffee with 5/6 drops of lemon and it was like a miracle the migraine was gone in 15 minutes. I hope this could help people who, like me, suffers from bad migraines and their bodies don't react well to other cures."

COFFEE, WARM FEET, COOL HEAD, GINGKO BILOBA
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 02/01/2010: Angela from Smalltown, Bc, Canada writes: "I have suffered from migraines for many years, quite often relating to my menstrual cycle. I feel like I had tried everything, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, drugs, changing my diet, and nothing seemed to make a difference.
I usually just lay in bed with a hot water bottle attached to my head for hours on end, waiting for sleep to come so I could sleep it off.
However, I think I have finally found a remedy that works regularly for me.
One thing I have found about migraines is that they are connected to dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the brain. When you get a migraine, your blood vessels dilate.
So, the magic cure for me is two things.
A) as soon as I start getting ANY sign of a migraine, I drink the strongest coffee I can find and as much of it as I want. I don't normally drink coffee, so it affects me quickly. The coffee constricts the blood vessels and helps ease the pain of the swelling in the brain.
B) also what I do is heat up my feet and cool down my head. This helps with my circulation. I find when I have a migraine, my feet get very cold, so if I heat them up by soaking them in hot water or using a hot water bottle on them and cool down my head with a cool compress, I get relief.
Finally, I have been taking gingko biloba regularly as it is good for improving circulation.
I have not had problems with migraines now for almost 8 months."
06/26/2011: Lisa from Middleboro, Ma replies: "I've read through all the threads and can identify with everyone's self-help remedies except for the person with occular migraines... I've suffered from them for over 20 years.. Took acute meds, preventative meds, alternative medicine including TCM, homeopathy, massage, herbal remedies... My self-help included excessive coffee use, orgasm and jumping into ice cold water... For me my migraines are tension related and a vicious cycle of caffeine... Which results in vasodilation... I've cut back my caffeine intake and still drink 2 cups of coffee but replaced other cups with green tea (baby steps).. This helped me but I resought japanese acupuncture.. Your link stood out b/c you thought to warm your feet b/c they would get cold... My acupuncturist diagnosed me w/ a kidney (among others) yin deficiency. Among some manifestations of kidney yin deficiency are cold feet and hand and sometimes resulting in liver fire rising... The energy from the feet is rushing up to the head so by warming the feet for about 10 minutes it helps redistribute the energy. It has helped me 50 percent of the time. If you didn't know that and you may already I wanted to validate you. Also, I was put on flaxseed mg. A day. This aids the hormone distribution although I don't know why I was put on them. I take them anyways and between the caffeine reduction, flax seed and a conscious intent to rid myself of them, I havent' taken any medicine in a few days which is HUGE!!!!!!!! I hope this helps someone, migraines are no Joke!"

COLD SHOWERS CURE HEADACHES

[YEA] 01/14/2008: April from Savannah, GA writes: "I stood in a freezing cold, icey shower for nearly 20 minutes with no relief. My migraines are debilitating, throbbing aches that stop me in my tracks. The cold felt good on my skin, but didn't help my pain."

[YEA] 02/16/2007: Araeshkigal from Hurst, TX writes: "I first started taking cold showers as a suggested remedy for migraines. It more than worked. It also helped alleviate skin breakouts, regular muscle cramping, and some blood pressure issues (I changed nothing else in diet or exercise to be sure this was what was having the effects) I find it's best to start barely warm and slowly get to cold. If you can't stand ice cold at first just go "on the cool side" till you get a tolerance. You don't have to *freeze* to get the benefits. Also I find cold baths do *not* have the same therapeutic effect as' cold showers (anyone else?)"

COOLING DOWN THE BRAIN STEM
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 12/28/2009: Jeanie from Lancaster, Ca, USA writes: "I have suffered from migraines for 40 years. Recently my husband came in from the cold and to tease me put his hand down the back of my neck, expecting me to yelp. Instead, I said, "Don't move that feels great!" He thought I was kidding. I wasn't. I was getting yet another headache. His hand warmed up so I got a gel pack out of the refrigerator and held it where his hand had been. In about 15 minutes the headache was gone. I have been doing this for about a month. It has stopped every migraine except one, and it was 50% better. I shared this with a friend who said that I was cooling down the brain stem. I googled "migraines and brain stem" and found a significant number of articles linking the two, but, nowhere could I find that applying cold would help. Here is what I do: I use a gel pack that is 4 inches by 5 inches. I do NOT keep it in the freezer - the frig is cold enough. I place it in the area from the base of my neck to the top of my spine. It's best if I can sit down in a high backed comfortable chair or sofa, or lie down. It takes about 15 minutes to start feeling very relaxed and to feel my hands and feet warm up. My daughter thought that it would feel uncomfortable because she always feels cold during a headache, but she said that it surprised her how good it felt. It has worked on other types of headaches as well and even stopped a panic attack. I don't know the science behind it, I just know that it is the fastest, cheapest, no side effects remedy I have ever used. Thanks for this great site - my family is healthier because of you!"
Replies[YEA] 01/10/2010: Karina from Munich, Bavaria, Germany replies: "YEA - ...I was so close to take a headache tablet and in the last moment I decided to get a cool pack. I am amazed how well it worked - within 10 min. I felt relieve and as if my brain calmed down. Thank you so much for this remedy I will definitely pass it on...it is very relaxing!"
[YEA] 01/11/2010: Breann from St. Louis, Mo replies: "I am a faithful reader of Earth Clinic. I saw this post regarding migraines and the use of a cool pack. I passed it along to my mom, who suffers from migraines multiple times per week. She tried it with her last episode, and she said it helped substantially. Thanks, EC!"
[YEA] 02/22/2010: Sophie from Pdx, Oregon replies: "I usually do not get headaches or migraines but this time I was really feeling flu-like symptoms, cramps bloated and I had a headache which turned into a migraine, I had the migraine for three days. So I looked up Earth Clinic. And drank about 1 T of Apple Cider Vinegar in some water ...then I read the story a lady shared about using cold packs for migraines. We have the flexible ice pack in the freezer I layed down and place it on the back of my neck where my brain stem is for about 15 minutes and my migraine went away. Great remedy and it worked for me!"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 03/23/2010: Michelle from Brunswick, Ga, Usa replies: "I am currently sitting here, unable to sleep due to a rapid onset of a migraine. Did I mention the carrots? LOL! I don't have an ice pack (you can bet I am buying one tomorrow!) right now, but what I do have is my son's bag of carrots-fresh out of the fridge-on the back of my neck at the base of the skull. I am staring to feel some relief (it's been about 5 minutes), and I am pretty sure that if I raid the fridge for more produce, I may actually be able to go to bed soon! I have suffered with migraines since puberty (I'm 34 now and am post total hysterectomy, so I know it's not the hormones anymore) and I never thought that I could get such fast relief! Thank you EC and those that post what works for them!"
06/08/2010: Eve K from Houston, Texas Usa replies: "I fill two gallon size plastic zip baggies with ice cubes--wrap each in a thin dish towel or t-shirt--place one on the neck and one over the eyes and lie down (a cool, dark, quiet room is best)...this is not a permanent fix but brings relief while waiting for other remedies to kick in....also, drink cool water and cool fresh juice (diluted is best). The ice packs usually make it possible for me to get to sleep and stay asleep through the night...if the pain comes back the next day, then more extreme measures are usually called for...(e.g., prescription meds--ugh)."

COQ10 AND NATTO
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 02/23/2011: Elaine from Flint, Texas writes: "I have been reading earth clinic for about a year now looking for relief of 15 plus years of debilitating migraines. About 8 months ago I started taking 400 mg. Of CoQ 10 everyday and for awhile I thought I had my migraines under control. It wasn't unusual for me to wake up every morning with one and some days they would last for 4 days with the nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to noise, smells and light. I notice they started letting up some and came less frequent and for shorter duration with the addition of the CoQ10 but I was still having them just less frequently. This is where I decided to add Nattokinase. I take one a day and it's 2000 FU. I have been on the Natto now for a little over 4 months and I have not had one single migraine. I felt I needed to shout to the world my experience. The migraines had ruled my life for so long. Kept me from living a normal life. I hope migraine sufferers will try this combo and see if it works for them. I know I have stumbled upon a miracle I have long prayed for. Hope this helps someone else."

DIETARY CHANGES

[YEA] 09/04/2009: Lisa from South Bound Brook, Nj, Usa writes: "Having suffered crippling migraines, topping out at 10 per month, tried prescriptions, etc. I researched and found a ketogenic diet (higher fat, moderate protein, low carbs) has been shown to help intractable cases of epilepsy in kids with great results, and is being researched in many countries as a help for migraines. Started on it, and within a week I went from 10 to 0 migraines. Also took myself off all wheat and most grains. Now I'm good unless I go off the diet. I make sure to use coconut milk in my coffeee, and coconut oil in my cooking, (even popcorn is better in coconut oil!)"

DMSO AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

[YEA] 06/14/2009: Sarah from Los Angeles, CA writes: "DMSO and H2O2 for Migraines:
My boyfriend gets constant and debillatating migraine headaches for the past several years (about once or twice a week)... it is what first brought me to Earthclinic many months ago when I started researching. He has ever since been by guniea pig!! I think that there's a lot of it to do with nutritional defficiencies (which I am still figuring out...) but I FINALLY came up with something that works QUICK in the meantime until I figure out the root cause this treats the symptoms.
I was reading about DMSO and how it could theoretically be used to treat a stroke in an emergency, and I was thinking that headaches have similar problems of lack of oxygen to the brain... so when he came over this morning w terrible headache that had lasted all night and not been relieved by Amerge or Flova prescription migraine pills... I mixed him a cocktail of organic "Monster C" juice, about 1 cup (8 oz.) with a tiny bit (about 1/8 t. DMSO and added a few drops of food grade 35% hudrogen peroxide. We applied an icepack to his forehead and within 20 minutes the headache that had lasted for about 8 hours went away completely! So happy! Hopes this remedy helps someone else."

EGG WHITES
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 06/04/2008: Teresa from Waiuku, New Zealand writes: "For painful sinuses and the accompanying headache - beat 2 egg whites (stops them being slimy and difficult to handle). Spread out on a gauze (or cloth) and put over your face (avoiding eyes). Put another cloth over (optional). Lay down on your back and go to sleep. The heat/temperature will harden the gauze. Suggest you leave it on as long as you can. You will be pain free and as a bonus will get a facelift.
I have used this remedy for migraines and hard to shift headaches and have always gained relief."

Replies08/12/2008: CD from Cincinnati, Ohio replies: "My understanding is that the salts in the sports drinks help to shrink the dilation of the blood vessels or whatever that cause a migraine. Also why it may work is that dehydration will trigger a migraine."

FENUGREEK, THYME
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 06/29/2011: Melanie B from Los Angeles, Ca, Usa writes: "Fenugreek & Thyme for Migraines
For years I suffered from Migraines. The symptoms I experienced were nausea, light sensitivity, smell sensitivity, and sharp pain on the left temple as well as my eye. To make matters worse this lasted for 2-3 days. I then noticed that it would happen around my menstrual cycle ever month without fail. I couldn't find relief in any over the counter medications. It got to be debilitating. The only thing I could do is lay in bed in a dark quiet room with a cold towel over my head.
One night I said enough is enough, I got up and ran cold water over my head and neck, as I did this the migraine would subside but when I took my head away from the water it would come back. I then remembered being given Fenugreek & Thyme capsules a few months back and decided to give it another try, but this time instead of taking the recommended dose of 1000 mg (700 mg of which was Fenugreek and 300 mg of Thyme), I increased the dosage amount by three and I took 3000 mg.
In 20 minutes my migraine was GONE! All these years of failed over the counter medications and being miserable and all I needed was in an herb. I was able to get a good night's sleep and when I woke in the morning I felt it coming on again so I took 1500mg, but it didn't seem to stop it so I took another 1500mg 30 minutes later and again the migraine disappeared. (I haven't noticed any side effects so far but if anything comes up I will repost).
I hope this helps, and I am happy to add my experience to the community as you all have given me so many great remedies over the years!
Melanie B - of Los Angeles, CA"

FEVERFEW
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 06/24/2009: Linda from Weedsport, NY writes: "Some perfumes cause severe migraine headaches for me. Debilitating pain, faintness, nausea, vomiting, the whole nine yards. Extra strength aspirin used to help, but that brings other problems. I found an online reference to feverfew and bought capsules. Now, even in the migraine stage where I can't see or walk straight, if I can get to the feverfew, I get relief. One or two capsules emptied into a small cup of water, shoot it down and chase it with more water. In my condition, I don't have time to wait for tea to brew. Within 10 minutes, I have complete relief. Then all I have to do is pray the neighbors have finished their laundry or have left for new vistas. :-)"

[YEA] 02/11/2009: Leslie from Inverness, CA writes: "Feverfew, which is an herb has cured my migraines. You can either grow the stuff, chop it up (a tablespoon's worth) and add it to a cup of hot water to make a tea. Or you can buy it in the health food store in tincture form. Don't buy the dried because it doesn't work. Add a few drops of the tincture to a cup of hot water and drink up. You can drink the tea just a migraine is coming on or drink it as a preventative. It's a nice tasting, soothing tea."

FIND YOUR TRIGGER
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 04/17/2008: Terry from Eugene, Oregon writes: "There is some great information here, but no one has addressed the possibilities of migraine due to non-food sources. My biggest triggers are environmental air quality factors. Things sure to trip my migraine activity is fragrances of all kinds (personal care items or cleaners, candles, incense, etc., scented fabric softeners are evil to me), chemical off-gassing and odors, cleanser odors, new materials off-gassing (new plastics, new leather, etc.), mold, pollens, animal dander, dustmites (big offender for me), dust, smoke of any kind, gas fumes, even unscented off-gassing from formaldehyde or welding fumes. New stereo or video components off-gas for months and will put me down so fast. New furniture will do the same. While I have specific food triggers, what is more vital is making sure my home environment is fragrance, chemical and as odor-free as possible."

[YEA] 02/11/2008: Amith from Durban, South Africa writes: "I thinks it's silly telling people not eat certain foods. For each individual Migraine Attacks are different.
Here are the common TRIGGERS:
Foods and food additives - Alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, artificial sweeteners (aspartame, saccharin), monosodium glutamate (MSG), citrus fruits, meats with nitrites, salt
Foods containing tyramines - Aged cheese, yogurt, sour cream, chicken livers, sausages, bananas, avocados, canned figs, raisins, peanuts, soy sauce, pickled fish, freshly baked breads, pork, vinegars, beans
Family history
Stress
Too much or too little sleep
Medications - Vasodilators (drugs that make blood vessels widen), oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
Smoking
Exposure to bright or fluorescent lighting
Strong odors - Perfumes, colognes, petroleum-based products
Hormonal changes -
Menstruation (common association), pregnancy, ovulation
Head trauma
Weather changes
Metabolic or infectious diseases
Physical exertion or fatigue
Motion sickness
Cold stimulus (eating ice cream)
YOU need to find your TRIGGER. Food is not mine but avoid MSG at all costs, Migraine or not. It's amazing how this screws up your body, yet it's everywhere.
I suffer from Sever Aura-Migraines, the worst kind. I figured out after 12 years it was a lack of sleep. Somehow my body requires at least 8 hours of sleep. If I get less sleep, I have to exercise much more than normal to avoid an attack.
The main problem is finding YOUR TRIGGER. I've never taken any pills for the headaches, But I'm very keen on trying some of the remedies here if I get an attack.
THE GOOD NEWS is the you won't suffer after 50. Migraines go away after 50 according to doctors.
Cool only 22 more years to go.I'm not sure I believe this unless I've heard it from a sufferer. Anyone care to add to this theory?"
[NAY] 05/19/2008: Dawn from London, Canada replies: "That's not true about people over 50 not getting migraines. my grandmother and aunt both still get migraines and they are both over 50."
05/29/2008: Pat from St. Louis, USA replies: "My head didn't get the message that I am not supposed to get migraines after 50! I am 64 and still get them."
06/23/2008: Danielle from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan replies: "Migraines: What ever you do, don't go on medication, that has done nothing but cause problems for me and i feel bad all the time. Since I went on preventatives, I have gotten more migraines then when i wasnt taking medication. I found feverfew worked for me for about a year, but that no longer works anymore. The worst thing is that I am sleep deprived and stressed out, but for working purposes I need to keep on going, anybody have any more things that are good for you to take, because I have always known what NOT to do, and the list is very long....Any suggestions??"
06/24/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Danielle from Saskatoon, First question, have you been using aspartame (nutrisweet)? It is well known for causing all kinds of headaches, including migraines! If not go read ingredients in your kitchen foods and see how many of them contain aspartame or any hydrolyzed plant (corn, soy, etc) protein because this is a combination of both MSG and aspartame. Allergies can be the cause of migraines also. If you are blessed with allergies, pay attention to what you eat or drink before they start (usually from minutes after to l hour after ingested). Any diet food or drink is probably going to be loaded with both MSG and aspartame, so beware! I have also heard positive comments from people started on magnesium supplements saying their headaches decreased. Usually with headache reactions from food or drink, my nose starts itching first and then the headache starts. I think it's probably the red food coloring in Marachino cherries that gives me the problem because I can eat all kinds of fresh cherries without headaches."

Even when I put my head under a pillow I still saw them, and it was very scarey. I went to a nuerologist and had a cat scan of my brain, his conclusion was' he said I have the side effects of a migraine with out the headaches. Well, since taking one garlic tablet every day, I am very excited to say, that I have had NO problems for about 4 years. So of course I told the Doctor. He didn't say much,I guess he was skeptic."

09/03/2011: Agapegirl from Orlando, Florida, Usa writes: "For 14 years I have had 3-day migraines approximately once a month (more or less). This week my 3-day migraine morphed into a 5-day full head headache. I haven't had a traditional "headache" since the migraines began, so I was very concerned. My standard migraine Rx (Relpax) only takes pain away for a few hours and it didn't even do that this week. A couple of times I tried 3 ibuprofen, which worked for about 2 hours each time. On earthclinic, ACV seemed to work for some people, so I decided to drive (nauseated and in pain) 20 minutes to the health store. I bought ACV capsules and took 2 (500 mg each) with water in the parking lot. By the time I reached home the headache/migraine pain was gone. I was exhausted and aching from 5 days of pain so I went to bed early. I took my normal nighttime supplements (200 mg chelated magnesium and 1 gr L-Glutamine), I woke up refreshed and back to normal. I will try ACV capsules the next time pain strikes. Thanks."

GLUTEN FREE

[YEA] 05/01/2011: Ck from Erie, Pa writes: "I have suffered with migraines for 61 years with relief only from sesame oil pulling and acv. It never completely alleviated migraines but helped. The past five years the migraines increased from two or three a week to five. I missed so much work, was out of it most of the time and unable to function when a new naturopath suggested I might be gluten sensitive! After yrs at pgh and Cleveland clinic no one had ever suggested that! I had been living on toast, too I'll to eat much else! I immediately started a gluten free diet and amazingly have been migraine free four months today! I feel my life has been a gift returned to me! I still use avc and sesame oil pulling every day for the remarkable health benefits but want to share my experience for any of you migraine sufferers. Our modified wheats now have over 500 times more gluten than they did 20 yrs ago. It is estimated that 50%of the population of the U.S. have some gluten related illness. Our livers simply cannot process this load. I hope my experience may help someone out there!"
