APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, BAKING SODA AND SEA SALT

2 YEA

[YEA]  02/27/2007: PD from USA writes: "MIGRAINE CURES: I usually have several migraines during a month, but since the first of January, until February 22, 2007 (during the time I could not eat or drink much, because of throat problems), I noticed I never got the first migraine during this time, On Thursday February 22, 2007 I had my first migraine, severe one. I thought I would try something I had bought for Migraines, It was called MY-GRASTICK, (roller stick 3ml/0.1fl.oz.) it contains 100% pure & Natural peppermint (menthe) & Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) & essential oils. I had used it on normal headaches and they went away but it was made for migraines. I tried it for several hours that day. It would ease it for a short while but it would come back just as strong, it would not go away, I finally took my migraine medicine. I then had a second Migraine on Sunday February 25, 2007, even more severe than the last one. I woke up with this one. I then decided to try your ACV remedy. I mixed ACV with Sea Salt, Baking Soda and water, sipped while putting ice packs on my head. The migraine eased off enough, where I could go to sleep, few hours later sipped some more of the ACV mixture, migraine eased off to a faint pain, never had to take any pills for it. I then got to wondering, what I had eaten, drank, took, did or did not do, that caused the first migraine and second migraine. These are the only changes in my diet before the 1st Migraine on February 22, 2007, I ate Chinese food, I had stopped taking my Vitamin B drops and I was no longer putting a drop of iodine on my hand every night before I went to bed (was putting it on a skin problem) and I accidentally drank some buttermilk (thought it was milk). Between the first migraine on Thursday February 22 and second migraine February 25, 2007, I had eaten Chinese Saturday night, was not taking my Vitamin B drops and was not putting the iodine on my hand. I am not going to eat any more Chinese for awhile, and I am going to test the B Vitamins and iodine drop, to see if one of those were actually keeping me from getting a Migraine. Will let you know my progress."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, DARK CHOCOLATE

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/31/2008: Katie from Cincinnati, OH writes: "I tried the apple cider vinegar when I had a migraine that would not go away. I took a teaspoon in a glass of water and it didn't seem to help. A few hours later, I tried again with a bit more - about a tablespoon this time.

I also decided at that point that I had a craving for chocolate, so I had two squares of dark chocolate. The migraine was almost totally gone within a half hour. I searched online and found out that chocolate contains magnesium, which is good for migraines, plus it elevates serotonin; low serotonin is thought to cause some migraines.

I'm not sure which helped more, or maybe it was the combination, but after 24 hours, I can finally function again!"

02/16/2009: Amanda from Murray, Kentucky, US replies: "Caffeine has always helped my headaches (I get tension headaches, sinus headaches, and migraines), so it is no wonder that Dark Chocolate helps some people alleviate headaches. Unfortunately, caffeine also causes tension, so people who get Tension headaches should avoid caffeine unless they actually have a tension headache."

AVOID MSG!

2 YEA

[YEA]  05/05/2007: Joanne from Tallahassee, FL, USA writes: "Like PD, I dicovered a connection between Chinese food and my migraines. It was MSG. I've had migraines from Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and an ever growing list of prepared foods to the point where I don't eat them much anymore (better for my body anyway). I found the best way to avoid them is try to avoid MSG, but it's very difficult, so I also take magnesium (400 mgs) a day. It seems to help keep them down, although lately I've been getting a lot of them but I think it was dietary because I was eating junk. *L* I'm going to try the ACV and see if that helps.. But if Chinese food triggers you, it just might be MSG.. good luck!"

[YEA]  08/29/2008: Phil from Sooke, BC, Canada replies: "Both my wife and I have a great sensitivity to MSG - bad migraines - and I know quite a few other people who are sensitive. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a nasty chemical - looks like shards of glass under a microscope - no wonder it is used as a meat tenderizer. Anyway, I would recommend to anybody who suffers from migraines to try and stay away from MSG. I know it is difficult in this day and age, but it can be done if you are careful and read the ingredients listed on food products."

BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES

2 YEA

[YEA]  12/23/2006: Chris from Colorado writes: "Well, it was that time of the month and I had the mother of all headaches. I tried apple cider vinegar in apple juice and it got a little better. 2 hours later I gave up and took a tablespoon of molasses (don't particularly like that stuff). 10 minutes later my headache was completely gone!"

[YEA]  11/09/2006: Karen from Union, KY writes: "This is the first time I've tried this for my monthly migraine, which I have had for several years. Nothing I tried seem to prevent this from happening, I could only medicate after it started. This is the first time I haven't had one after using the Molasses. I took a couple of spoonfuls in the morning and took it to work and used a couple of times during the day. I use an organic unsulphered brand. So glad I have found this, no more migraine this month. I really can't believe this, still waiting to see if one comes on."

BREATHE INTO A BROWN PAPER BAG

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/10/2009: Russ from Los Angeles, California, USA writes: "I myself do not suffer from migraine headaches, but I heard a lady on the radio who does. She said this method works every time for her. As soon as you feel a migraine coming on, take a brown paper bag and breathe into it (hold it against your face so that very little outside air gets in). Keep the bag in place for 10, 15 or even 20 minutes. If a paper bag is not available, you can use a plastic bag, but since it doesn't "breathe," you'll need to take a few breaths outside the bag periodically. She said it will seem like nothing is happening, but the migraine will not develop. By the way, her husband is an emergency room doctor and she learned this method from him."

BUTTERBUR

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/14/2007: Ani from ontario, canada writes: "I was reading your migrane section today because i just got over my first real migrane and wanted to educate myself on home remedies in case i ever get another one. In any case I ready the butterbur cure and remember a customer of mine telling me that she had suffered from weekly migranes until her doctor told her about Butterbur. She said it relieved her migranes significantly and she now leads a normal mostly migrane free life. Thought i'd pass it on."

Francoise from Los Angeles, CA sent us this remedy for migraines which she found on the internet. Like us, you've probably never heard of this product!

Here it is: "Don't like the thought of taking strong prescription medications for migraine headaches? Consider trying butterbur (Petasites hybridus). This herb is native to Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia, and has been used for centuries as an effective remedy for headaches, back pain and asthma. Recent studies suggest migraine sufferers may benefit from butterbur's actions - reducing inflammation and spasms in blood-vessel walls - without experiencing the side effects associated with prescription medications (except some burping). A study published in Neurology, Dec. 28, 2004, reported that after four months, people taking 75 mg of butterbur daily for migraines had 48 percent fewer migraine attacks per month - similar to the effects of prescription migraine drugs. Be very careful about the butterbur you purchase - only use butterbur extracts that are guaranteed to be free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. The adult dosage ranges from 50-100 mg twice daily, and should be taken with meals.

CAYENNE

2 YEA

[YEA]  03/20/2009: Christie from Houston, TX writes: "I have been using Cayenne pepper to treat my Migraines. I take 2 small caps. and an over the counter pain reliever. I DO NOT take any "Migraine" Medication with Cayenne pepper. But I find that it works great. I also take cayenne pepper the day after a migrain to get rid of the remnants of it."

[YEA]  01/05/2009: Veronica from Lubbock, Texas writes: "I frequently have headaches and migraines and was complaining at work one day about how nothing works and a coworker suggested that I try cayenne pepper on the tip of my tongue. Her grandfather swore by it and she agreed it worked. Well, today was the moment of truth. I woke up with a headache and reached for a pinch of cayenne to put at the tip of my tongue. Since it is a pepper it does burn a bit, but within minutes my headache was gone. I'm a believer!"

You eat half of a chocolate bar and drink half a glass of milk. Wait 25 min and eat the rest of the chocolate bar and drink the rest of the milk. For me the migraine was gone in 10 min."

COCONUT OIL

1 YEA
1 NAY

[YEA]  11/29/2007: Sandy from Bangalore, India writes: "Dear Earthclinic, Thank you for putting up such a fabulously informative site. I am a daily visitor. After reading some virtues of coconut oil on your site, I decided to drink it daily for weight loss. Well, I began to notice that if I had a couple of teaspoons coconut oil in the morning with my breakfast, then I didnt get acidity the entire day. Also, I didnt get migraines that day. I am quite susceptible to migraines close to my periods. So during those days, I have a couple of teaspoonfuls twice/thrice a day, and dont get migraines that day. In fact, I now carry a small bottle of coconut oil in my purse, and drink some of it if I start feeling a migraine coming on, or if I start feeling nauseous(sign of acidity)--after drinking the oil I burp (because of acid base neutalization and subsequent gas release, I guess), and my acidity/migraine goes off.If I am home, I may drink the coconut oil with some cold milk--helps immensely. If I am out, I drink the coconut oil by itself, and just drink some water on top of it to take the oil taste off my mouth. Ever since I started taking coconut oil (thanks to earthclinic), I have been free of migraines and acidity nausea. My facial skin had open pores previously--the pores have closed now (!!) since drinking coconut oil and skin looks moisturized. Thanks again."

[NAY]  01/11/2007: Tammy from Roseburg, Oregon writes: "I avoid anything with coconut oil in it! It gives me terrible migraine headaches. My whole family runs this allergic reaction. Now, I don't know if it's "virgin" - it's the C.O. you see in lots of products (candy, esp.) A small amount can set me back for a day; more has caused me a visit to the ER! I did not run across anyone else who said they had the same reaction, but my dad, aunts, cousins, etc. all are allergic to C.O."

01/05/2009: Wendy from Los Angeles, CA replies: "If you are talking about the coconut oil found in products, then that is not unrefined. Commercially produced CO is the absolute worse! This person is talking about the pure, natural form that our bodies can metabolize efficiently. Whenever you buy coconut oil make sure it is unrefined! If a product has coconut oil in it, you can pretty much bet money that it is refined!"

COENZYME Q10 AND RIBOFLAVIN

1 YEA

[YEA]  08/12/2008: CD from Cincinnati, Ohio writes: "COQ10 & Riboflavin for Migraine:

I was really happy to see this site! I didn't see anything about these 2 supplements. My son has been suffering with migraines now for a year and 1/2 and we have seen a host of specialists. His neurologist ran a blood test to test for these 2 nutient levels because he said they actually help prevent migraines. My sons levels were extremely low. I just wanted to post this as a great migraine preventative. We have definitly seen an improvement."

COFFEE WITH A FEW DROPS OF LEMON

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/06/2006: Vanessa from Lisbon, Portugal writes: "I started suffering from migraines a few years ago and I had tried almost all natural cures I found in books, sites (I tried almost all cures listed in this site) etc.. I was desperate the migraines were getting worst there were days I could not even got up from bed. While visiting my grandma I mentioned the migraines and she told me to try coffee with a few drops of lemon. Since I don't like coffee and had tried almost everything I thought it wasn't something as simple as a cup of coffee that would make me feel better. One day I was so desperate that I remind that and thought I had nothing to lose trying it. I drank a cup of coffee with 5/6 drops of lemon and it was like a miracle the migraine was gone in 15 minutes. I hope this could help people who, like me, suffers from bad migraines and their bodies don't react well to other cures."

COLD SHOWERS CURE HEADACHES

3 YEA

[YEA]  01/14/2008: April from Savannah, GA writes: "I stood in a freezing cold, icey shower for nearly 20 minutes with no relief. My migraines are debilitating, throbbing aches that stop me in my tracks. The cold felt good on my skin, but didn't help my pain."

[YEA]  02/16/2007: Araeshkigal from Hurst, TX writes: "I first started taking cold showers as a suggested remedy for migraines. It more than worked. It also helped alleviate skin breakouts, regular muscle cramping, and some blood pressure issues (I changed nothing else in diet or exercise to be sure this was what was having the effects) I find it's best to start barely warm and slowly get to cold. If you can't stand ice cold at first just go "on the cool side" till you get a tolerance. You don't have to *freeze* to get the benefits. Also I find cold baths do *not* have the same therapeutic effect as' cold showers (anyone else?)"

[YEA]  02/13/2007: C from PD writes: "In the summer time when I get a migraine that would not quit, I would go in the afternoon to the springs, which is like jumping into ice water, and the migraine would got away instantly, I had always used ice packs which helped, but did not get rid of them, jumping in ice cold springs did, which would be the same as really cold water in your shower or bath."

DIETARY CHANGES

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/04/2009: Lisa from South Bound Brook, Nj, Usa writes: "Having suffered crippling migraines, topping out at 10 per month, tried prescriptions, etc. I researched and found a ketogenic diet (higher fat, moderate protein, low carbs) has been shown to help intractable cases of epilepsy in kids with great results, and is being researched in many countries as a help for migraines. Started on it, and within a week I went from 10 to 0 migraines. Also took myself off all wheat and most grains. Now I'm good unless I go off the diet. I make sure to use coconut milk in my coffeee, and coconut oil in my cooking, (even popcorn is better in coconut oil!)"

DMSO AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

1 YEA

[YEA]  06/14/2009: Sarah from Los Angeles, CA writes: "DMSO and H2O2 for Migraines:

My boyfriend gets constant and debillatating migraine headaches for the past several years (about once or twice a week)... it is what first brought me to Earthclinic many months ago when I started researching. He has ever since been by guniea pig!! I think that there's a lot of it to do with nutritional defficiencies (which I am still figuring out...) but I FINALLY came up with something that works QUICK in the meantime until I figure out the root cause this treats the symptoms.

I was reading about DMSO and how it could theoretically be used to treat a stroke in an emergency, and I was thinking that headaches have similar problems of lack of oxygen to the brain... so when he came over this morning w terrible headache that had lasted all night and not been relieved by Amerge or Flova prescription migraine pills... I mixed him a cocktail of organic "Monster C" juice, about 1 cup (8 oz.) with a tiny bit (about 1/8 t. DMSO and added a few drops of food grade 35% hudrogen peroxide. We applied an icepack to his forehead and within 20 minutes the headache that had lasted for about 8 hours went away completely! So happy! Hopes this remedy helps someone else."

EGG WHITES

1 YEA

[YEA]  06/04/2008: Teresa from Waiuku, New Zealand writes: "For painful sinuses and the accompanying headache - beat 2 egg whites (stops them being slimy and difficult to handle). Spread out on a gauze (or cloth) and put over your face (avoiding eyes). Put another cloth over (optional). Lay down on your back and go to sleep. The heat/temperature will harden the gauze. Suggest you leave it on as long as you can. You will be pain free and as a bonus will get a facelift.
I have used this remedy for migraines and hard to shift headaches and have always gained relief."

ENERGADE

1 YEA

[YEA]  Dagon from South Africa writes: "Been struggling with acute migraines my whole life. Then a buddy tells me to have an energade as soon as you notice the symptoms. I was very skeptical but it worked. Don't know what is in that stuff it has worked for me almost every time since. Anybody got any ideas?"

08/12/2008: CD from Cincinnati, Ohio replies: "My understanding is that the salts in the sports drinks help to shrink the dilation of the blood vessels or whatever that cause a migraine. Also why it may work is that dehydration will trigger a migraine."

FEVERFEW

2 YEA

[YEA]  06/24/2009: Linda from Weedsport, NY writes: "Some perfumes cause severe migraine headaches for me. Debilitating pain, faintness, nausea, vomiting, the whole nine yards. Extra strength aspirin used to help, but that brings other problems. I found an online reference to feverfew and bought capsules. Now, even in the migraine stage where I can't see or walk straight, if I can get to the feverfew, I get relief. One or two capsules emptied into a small cup of water, shoot it down and chase it with more water. In my condition, I don't have time to wait for tea to brew. Within 10 minutes, I have complete relief. Then all I have to do is pray the neighbors have finished their laundry or have left for new vistas. :-)"

06/24/2009: DJ from Pdx, Or replies: "Linda, If you want to try the tea but can't wait for it to brew try making the tea now and then pour it into ice cube trays and cover it with plastic wrap. Then when you need one pop it (or three) in a pot on high on the stove and virtually instant tea.

Check the side effects of the medication you are on also. I have suffered migraines for 24 years. I went off all meds back in Feb. I had one month where I had a number of migraines but I haven't had one in two months. After 24 years of at least 1 migraine every month lasting up to 3 days... I take a few more suppliments than I ever did meds but what a difference.

Let us know how the tea works out.

Good luck"
