"Metatarsalgia (literally metatarsal pain, colloquially known as stone bruise) is a general term used to refer to any painful foot condition affecting the metatarsal region of the foot. This is a common problem that can affect the joints and bones of the metatarsals. Metatarsalgia is most often localized to the the first metatarsal head (the ball of the foot just behind the big toe). There are two small sesamoid bones under the first metatarsal head. The next most frequent site of metatarsal head pain is under the second metatarsal. This can be due to either too short a first metatarsal bone or to "hypermobility of the first ray" (metatarsal bone + medial cuneiform bone behind it), both of which result in excess pressure being transmitted into the second metatarsal head." 09/07/2011: Shereen from Colombo, Sri Lanka: "I was told I had Metatsalgia yesterday. I am 52 years old and my fasting blod sugar is 85. I work out a lot. A week ago I started taking omega 3 fish oils, vitamin c 500 mg and vitamin. In addition I take a B complex vitamin. Is there anything else I should do? Also, is there any hope of pain going away completely? Also we have no Podiatrists in Sri Lanka and specialised footwear is also not available in the country, please give suggestions taking this point into consideration

This latest crippling episode lasted 1 1/2 years and was just relieved when I added as a last resort BORON (part of bone health), in the form of BORAX to my diet. As per this site, I followed the 1/8th of a tsp in a liter of water per day for 2 months.... I noticed after 10 days a measurable improvement and was walking after 1 month for up to an hour without pain. I would highly recommend a metatartsal support cushion if you can find one. I take a number of supplements and vitamins but nothing worked until Borax (and expensive orthotics which I needed for very high arches). Good luck with it."
