Laryngopharyngeal Reflux
Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR), otherwise known as Silent Reflux Disease, is a type of reflux that affects the esophagus, voice box, and throat.
Symptoms include: "...hoarseness, postnasal drip, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, indigestion, chronic coughing and throat clearing. The prevalence of LPR is unknown; however, cough, hoarseness, and post-nasal drip are among the most common symptoms for which people seek medical attention. LPR is still considered somewhat controversial because there is no gold standard test for its diagnosis. When there is a clinical suspicious for reflux of acidic gastric juice as the cause of the LPR symptoms, an Esophageal pH Monitoring can help to confirm the diagnosis of reflux disease and establishing the relationship between reflux and respiratory and laryngeal symptoms."

ALOE VERA
10/15/2011: Motormouth from Charlotte, Nc: "To Ted,
This is my first day trying aloe vera for LPR. There were so many in the store I didnt know which one to get. I got one for digestion. It also has anise, chamomile and pepermint in it. It says to take 2 tsp to 4 tsp but I took one to see how I would react. Immediately after drinking one tsp., I kept bringing and coughing up clear mucus. Is this normal? Is this part of the Aloe vera trying to rid the body of the bad? or is this something to be worried about?"

[YEA] 05/10/2006: David from Thousand Oaks, CA: "Went to 6 different ENTs (sad but true). Finally 1 good ENT knew what my problem was when I described the symptoms to him (globus or feeling something stuck in my throat, dry mouth, white tongue, etc.). He performed a flexiscope and found I have LPR which is form of "Silent Reflux" where acid flow up past your Upper sphincter and inflame your vocal chord causing irritations. He immediately put me in 2x PPI Nexium, it helped reduced my symptoms but I still get regular irritations in my throat. I decided to try ACV mixed with Raw Honey after each meal and it greatly reduced my symptoms. I feel better and is revisiting my ENT and should reduce to 1 PPI/day. Not good thing to do PPI if possible. Lots of side effects and long-term health risks.
Side-note is that if you have heartburn or throat lump problems, make SURE you get a good GI or ENT to diagnose. Don't go to a GP (General Practitioner) or FP (Family Practitioner) or Internist, they are not usually good and don't have expertise or equipment to diagnose your problem. They can make things worse by guessing your problem and misdiagnosing. Dr's. are people too and they're good and bad ones everywhere. It's up to you to find out and do your home work.
People that have LPR like me don't have heartburn because the acid does not stay long enough in the Esophagus to cause irritation. I did Esophogram and Barrium Swallon test and found don't have Esophagitis."
Replies01/27/2012: Josene from Port Douglas, Australia replies: "Hi David, I have been diagnosed by and ENT specialist and he says I have LPR. I seem to have the symptoms you describe plus I cannot wear anything firm around my waist or chest etc. I was given 40mg somac tabs to take twice a day. After one week they made me very dizzy and depressed so I stopped taking them. I do not have dairy or soy or sugar, tomatoes and onions. I am happy to try apple cider vinegar or bicarbonate of soda. Do you recommend either of these. To make matters worse I have been left with vertigo. It can be very debilitating as can the coughing from LPR."

[QUESTION] 03/16/2010: Sasha from New York, Ny: "I am told I have silent acid relux.. no heartburn, but tightness in my throat, esophogeal spasms, excess mucus, hypersalivation, and anxiety from all of the above. Difficlut to belch, but when I do it seems to relive the symptoms a bit. It's as though its gas not acid that is causing the problem. It began a few months ago after a bout with bronchitis and asthma related symptoms. I used an albuterol inhaler and not sure if that inflamed my throat / esophogus. (not using anymore, no asthma symptoms) Was put on Prilosec by the ENT (didn't work), Acipehx by the GI (made the symptoms worse) and digestive enzymes by a homeopathic doctor (felt some burning in my tummy) I have given up coffee, wine, citrus, chocolate, tomatoes etc. Would like to know how I can determine if I have too much or too little acid? Is there a home PH test I can use? With the symptoms I described, do you think ACV with baking soda would work? Is aloe vera a good remedy (it has citric acid??) Look forward to some guidance here. My daughter is getting married in June and I really want to feel good by that time. Thanks in advance"
Replies03/17/2010: Michelle from Germfask, Mi/usa replies: "I also have silent reflux and have most of the above symptoms but I also lose my breathe when laughing. The doctor tells me it's just acid reflux. I don't get heartburn so it's the silent type. I would also like to know if I should use ACV or baking soda? Thanks everyone this is a great site."
07/30/2010: Lee from Loxahatchee, Fl replies: "I too have had similar problems and just went for a test called a manometry test. It measures the amount of PH being produced."
08/18/2010: David M from Putnam, Connecticut, United States replies: "To-Michelle from Germfask, Mi/usa, I am having the EXACT same issues as you I was wondering if you've gotten any relief or figured it out at all yet? I've started using just ACV, probably going to try it with baking soda as if the problem is LPR more acid is probably not the best option."
08/24/2010: Nina from London, On, Canada replies: "I have been recently diagnosed with LPR that I am not clear about. The issue is too little or too much acid. LPR meds block acid, but if someone has not enough acid, that would not be good. A home test with baking soda indicated that I have very little or almost no stomach acid, and I have been taking HCL supplement. My throat mucus is significally reduced (even though I am not clear on what brings the results), but my doctor claims I have LPR due to a loose tube. I am very confused as what is best to do (continue hcl or take the doctor's meds). If anyone knows, would appreciate your feedback."
08/25/2010: Msg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "What kind of home test did you do?"

GENERAL FEEDBACK
09/04/2010: Jody from Fredericton, Nb Canada: "Laryngopharyngeal Reflux - I see no one has offered a lot of help for this one. I intend to pursue a hormone related cause to this problem, namely hypothyroidism. There is also a possible low testosterone connection which I, as a man, am very interested in as well. I'll let you know how it goes."
Replies10/26/2011: Macky from New Iberia, La replies: "Slippery Elm is a great remedy for this. It helps the entire GI tract."

MULTIPLE REMEDIES

01/16/2012: Mark from Newton Abbot, Devon: "Hello, I just wanted to drop by and finally say hello and maybe post a question if possible.
As a lifelong natural health advocate I have been addicted to the is site for many, many months now, a great deal of the info was not new to me, but so much more is, after many months of just browsing I finally decided to register and drop by to say hello, over the next few months I will try to find the time to offer some of my knowledge that should help others to fix various conditions, ( I have read certain posts that I think I can help with)
Right now I do have a question that you may want to post in the above section.
I popped my L5 disc in my back earlier this year from squatting (bodybuilding) and was told I needed surgery to fix it, I refused and decided to help it heal naturally (which it has done) the one mistake I made was to listen to the doc who told me to use ibuprofen for a few weeks to get past the worst of it, like a fool I did and ended up with wheezing / asthma which has passed with the help of a liquorice and a slippery elm supp, but now I have silent reflux which comes and goes throughout the day, I have no doubt that this was caused by the drugs as I have never had a problem with it prior, I am treating it again with the liquorice supp but wanted to ask if anyone knows how to tell if I now have ulcers, I have no stomach pain, I did have gas and bloating a few weeks back but this has now subsided and I am left with the LPR only, I believe I can treat it with the following.
Liquorice 3 - 4 x daily
slippery elm 3 - 4 x daily
high strength probiotics daily
digestive enzymes daily.
No sharp or crunchy food whilst healing to prevent aggravation to LES valve.
Manuka honey 3 x daily to help heal the LES valve
No onions whilst healing (My favourite! they may relax the LES valve a little.)
Liver detox to ensure adequate bile flow for acid formation.
My only uncertainty is whether or not the drugs have caused ulcers or just general damage to my stomach lining, if I have ulcers I can treat them easily but with a different approach (or they may just heal on their own ) to that above and without enzymes, (if I have ulcers they are likely only caused by inflammation and not virus related) does anyone know how to determine if ulcers are present without blood or stomach pain?
Once I have succeeded in fixing this ailment I will put all the info together for all those hundreds of others who are also suffering from the nasty side effects of using ibuprofen and other NSAID,
I have a pretty clear understanding of what has happened due to using the drugs but I am not sure if ulcers are present, other than blindly treating them first (which may be unnecessary) I do not know of a diagnostic method to determine their presence as I have never had them before. I see no point in visiting a GP to be offered more drugs (proton pumps etc. ) often they do no more than look at you with that mocking grin take an educated guess and offer drugs based on that, I can do better than that on my own!
Any tips would be useful, Thanks Mark"
Replies01/17/2012: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Mark, be careful with the Licorice as it can cause HBP. I used to never have any probs with it until just recently and have narrowly escaped two critical episodes of HBP without stroke or heart attack, not exclusively but primarily because of Licorice. I would recommend trading it for DGL form as it cannot cause hyperelivation of Aldosterone. You have not listed the critical Zinc/Vit-A in your protocol for healing. Baking Soda and or Sea Salt are good to take Prior to the other supplements and meals to buffer any excess acid.
I wear a Magnetic Belt over my tummy region with very good results.
Symptoms of ulcers may include stabbing pain in the tummy region, bloating, blood in stools, diarrhea or constipation, vomiting. I have long had this kinds of probs but never diagnosed w/ ulcer. It sounds like simply gastritis (which can be severe in itself).
Hope this helps and good luck."
[YEA] 01/23/2012: Mark from Newton Abbot, Devon Uk replies: "YEA TO DIET AND PROBIOTICS,Tim H, Thanks for the reply, I obviously do not have ulcers based on your description.
No problem with the liquorice and blood pressure issue I check it daily and mine is always spot on low from a hectic fitness / bodybuilding and clean diet life style,
Good news to anyone interested,
My suspicions were correct in that the ibuprofen damages both the gut mucus membrane and also healthy bacteria, this is what I believe happens and my programme should fix many others with reflux issues permanently.
The ibuprofen (in my case) acts similar to antibiotics in that they destroy a fair amount of essential healthy bacteria in the gut and gi track, but ibuprofen also cause severe damage and inflammation to the stomach mucus membrane which governs the quantity and strength of stomach acid, as the membrane has been damaged it is no longer able to produce enough strong enough acid in the stomach, and this is where the problem lies because the acid strength controls the closing strength of the LES valve through the nervous system, the acid MUST be strong enough to digest food properly in order to produce a strong nerve signal to close the valve tightly after each mouthful of food has entered the stomach, if the acid is low or weak the valve will not close properly and depending on the severity this will cause acid to leak up into the throat area causing either full on heart burn, acid reflux or silent reflux the first two conditions are usually obvious but with silent reflux the cause is not always obvious as the symptoms are often little more than the feeling of a lump in the throat area near the voice box some discomfort may be felt in the ears and chest area and the voice may be week on occasion but generally the problem is not always associated with reflux.
If this seems to describe your situation you need to repair the gut and throat membrane whilst repopulating the gut with healthy bacteria, the plan above is how I did it in 3 4 days! Anti-acids will never fix this problem they can only make it worse as the acid is already to weak to close the LES obviously weakening the acid even more is not the answer.
So this was the cause of my acid reflux (initially) and then silent reflux (later)
My simple programme detailed above has sorted my problem in a few days! About a week has since past and all is well : - ) this was really bugging me for months so it demonstrates that a designated treatment programme is required to fix it
The only extra item I added was a few drops of aloe juice in my liquorice drink.
I intend to follow the programme for several more weeks to ensure a fully rebuilt gut environment.
It should be mentioned that my diet is and always has been spot on and healthy with lots of raw fruit and veg, if you do not eat this way you may not experience the same results as I did on this programme, remember that the healthy raw food is a major part in fixing this problem, I suspect the reflux for many is actually caused by poor diets as this alone is likely to cause inflammation and damage to the gut in much the same way as the ibuprofen did for me (and the hundreds of others on this site).
So clean up your diet and then follow the steps above and acid reflux will cease to exist.
Good luck!
Mark "
01/25/2012: Marina from Cresskill, Nj replies: "Mark, it seems I have the same symptoms: feeling of lump in the throat and lots of muccus that makes me choke sometimes. Not sure how these symptoms started: lots of stress, and headaches for which I took ibuprophen at times. I exercise everyday and my diet excludes all things harmful that ever mentioned that should be avoided in case of LPR. I exercise 5 days a week, I eat fruits and vegetables, but suspect my diet is not balanced. I eat much less during the week and then I overeat on weekend. I have 1 cup of coffee and 1 cup of tea a day and 2 glasses of wine on weekend. I saw GI who suspected LPR and sent me to see ENT. ENT never did any tests but prescribed medication to try for a couple of month which I haven't taken in hopes I will find a natural remedy. Your plan seems like a solution but it needs to be designed on individual basis. I was wondering if you could provide me with more detail or suggest who is best to talk to (natural healer, etc) and how do I find one? I am planning to see certified oriental medicine doctor and acupuncturist, would he offer comparable solution? Thank you. Marina"

REMEDIES NEEDED
08/15/2011: Saravanan. from Doha, Qatar: "could anyone help me to get rid of LPR. Please kindly suggest which is better for LPR. There is no heart burn, but throat pain and sore throat makes me to worry a lot. I am expecting someone to give remedy for the problem. I am ready to try anything to get rid of this please."
Replies10/26/2011: Macky from New Iberia, La replies: "Slippery Elm is very good for the entire GI tract. It helps me and a friend with this throat problem"
03/01/2012: Eric from Bronx, Ny, Usa replies: "I was also recently diagnosed with LPR. I have the hoarse voice, coughing, lump in throat, choking, etc.I am currently cleaning up my diet, etc and it seems that the lump in my throat is getting better. It started off with a cold in January which went into an upper respiratory infection and then on to major coughing coupled with an acid diet and hence..LPR
I believe that my diet is a major factor with me and LPR as I was eating a lot of acidic foods and higher fat meals, coffee, chocolate, tomato based products, etc.
There are a few websites to check out as far as cleaning up your diet:
http://www.balance-ph-diet.com/index.html
http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm
You have to read a lot on the topic and some foods on the site contradict one another.
Organic apple cider vinegar (Bragg) amongst others that have the "mother" in it as well as a freshly squeezed lemon are both alkalines and raise the pH level in drinking water which helps as well.
There are also pH test strips which you can buy to test your saliva or urine which measures the pH level in your body. A person with a lower pH level than normal is susceptible to illness, cancer, etc from my various readings.
I hope this helps a little."
03/01/2012: Eric from Bronx, Ny, Usa replies: "Saravanan, I posted some comments in the general feedback section of LPR which may help you out."
