Your Age At Onset of Symptoms? 28
What is Your Line of Work? Still working? at the time, office bookkeeping.
Medical History: good health, athletic, and involved in sport activity my whole life. occasional migraines. low iron count in blood.
Does Exercise Help? walking, bicycling, light stretching and the BEST is swimming in heated pools. Getting the heart-rate up is very useful, and I believe increase of oxygen a plus.
What Were Your First Symptoms? pain in wrist joints, pressure points, knees, and overall stiffness. Chronic fatigue - the worst part of all. And my capacity to concentrate for extended periods of time decreased ...during these times I always felt stupid and frustrated for not knowing why some easy concepts would not sink in.
What Are Your Current Symptoms? I get maybe 2 or 3 bad attacks a year which leave my hands unable to hold a glass without taking care not to drop it - i loose sensation in my fingers. Most pain surfaces when the weather is damp and bone-chilling cold. I am still careful to cover my feet, particularly sensitive to cold and drafts, even in summer.
Did You Ever Have A Long Lasting Virus? no
Any Military Service? no. but i did fight forest for two years, living in a fire camp..it was military-like
Chemical or Pesticide Exposure? smoke and poison oak inhalation from fire-fighting in my early 20's (for the following 10 years i broke out with poison oak rashes every 3-4 months. I was exposed to asbestos - living in old military barracks for two years.
How Has Fibro Affected Your Life? the first two years it was very frustrating; i suffered mild depression from the debilitating feeling. I was in my late 20's but my body felt much older. Also, 12 years ago fibro wasn't recognized much by medical institutions and often i felt I was psychosomatic. The drugs prescribed for the pain did help the pain but also dulled my senses, so those went down the toilet (literally). When first diagnosed, I went to a 'workshop' designed to help sufferers learn to 'manage' their pain. I met a woman who was not much older than I who was wheel-chair bound because of the atrophy of lack of use of her body due to bouts of pain. I swore to exercise no matter how much I hurt...that helped me immensely.
What Makes Symptoms Worse? damp, cold environments. Lack of exercise.
What Makes You Feel Better? Treat myself well when I feel the pain. I found heat to be essential to easing pain: heating pad, soak in tub. even a lap-blanket and a good hot cup of tea with some good music. Exercise no matter how much it hurts - stretching helps me
Do Your Symptoms Include Brain Fog? I've never heard of this term before now, but it about sums up the 'stupidity syndrome' i feel at times, and tends to go hand-in-hand with bouts of tiredness.
How many years has it been since you developed the brain fog associated with fibromyalgia? In the beginning, I didn't notice; but even later as pain symptoms decreased, i still have bouts of tiredness, and the first part of my body to know i'm tired is my brain stops processing...it has become the curse for me in the last five years
Was Your Rate of Decline Fast? Mine started with pain to my wrist and ankle joints, which was originally diagnosed as carpel-tunnel (yeah - like in my ankles), and over a period of six months I experienced increased pain in joints, and burning sensitivity to major pressure points throughout my body. I was put on high-dose anti-inflammatory meds, that deadened the pain and my brain as well (so those drugs I threw out and decided to live with the pain).
Have You Tried Avoiding Dietary Fluoride? I didn't know I was exposed to fluoride outside of that in my toothpaste, and maybe in my drinking water.
Remedies Tried: I used to use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory meds, panadol and ibuprofen, and of late only in severe attacks I use 500mg of paracetamol or aulin (a drug in Italy used for muscular cramping and headaches). The best remedies are keeping my mind off the pain by staying busy with hobbies that really interests me, and applying heat. Exercise is a means of heating the body, so it too applies. PRAYER is a big help, that when I hurt I use it as an opportunity to unite my suffering with others who are suffering - victims of natural disasters, broken families, difficulties faced by loved ones. It gives PURPOSE to the pain and I use it so to not let it be in vain (it also moves me out of my self and on the other)..trust me, it works.
Your Theories: When I was first diagnosed, the encouragement my doctor gave was that it was possible that the symptoms in some cases 'burn themselves out'. I held on to that hope. I also think the attitude of the mind makes a difference. When I'm hurting the last thing I need is for someone to feel sorry for me - it is at those moments I need a drill sergeant around to get me moving, otherwise i am apt to surrender to the pain and let it have the upper hand. After 12 years, I have found that my pain, has for the most part, disappeared. I still get the burning sensation at pressure points and sharp throbbing pain in joints, but it is no longer a constant companion.
Are We Missing Any Important Questions? 1. Have some of your symptoms lessened or disappeared? 2. Do you have symptoms all the time, or do they come and go (and how frequently).

Does Exercise Help? maybe light walking but does not help if I'm really bad. I DO have rheumatoid arthritis also so that factors into my exercise.
What Were Your First Symptoms? Tired for no reason. Achy joints, muscles. Thought I had west nile all last summer but tested neg.
What Are Your Current Symptoms? Sleep & RLS comes and goes. Tired most of the time. Surprisingly severe pain in my feet after waking. Like walking on broken glass for the first hour. Pain pretty much everywhere in muscles (I'm trying not to include my RA joint pain in this description.) Weird chest congestion won't go away. When I do something strenuous that I normally would feel sore from for a day I now will be nearly unable to get out of bed next morning and it will last for days to a week. If I over do ANYTHING I pay for it several times over now.

How Has Fibro Affected Your Life? Tired all the time makes me feel tired and useless. I feel old, sometimes I wish I could just die instead of feeling like my life vanished SO QUICKLY. I feel bad for my family, I've always been their rock now they have to help me. I've gained 40 or so lbs and that effects me too. But I don't have much else to do to make me feel better than to make something nice for the family then eat it.
What Makes Symptoms Worse? over doing anything. Over exerting any muscles. Not getting enough sleep.
What Makes You Feel Better? Hot baths and easy strolling (not fast walking or the kind you'd actually lose weight doing)
Do Your Symptoms Include Brain Fog? I'm blonde so that may be a trick question. I've thought lately my words get mixed up sometimes.
How many years has it been since you developed the brain fog associated with fibromyalgia? n/a
Was Your Rate of Decline Fast? no
Have You Tried Avoiding Dietary Fluoride? I live in the country, we have our own well. And, honestly, I have pretty great teeth, naturally - so I don't brush as much as I should and then I use just the toothbrush or sometimes uncle toms or sometimes regular toothpaste. So, I just don't get a lot of flouride in the first place.
Remedies Tried: Mobic didn't work. Medrol makes me feel better but I hate it, afraid I'll lose my hair and get chubby cheeks. MTX I just started last week.

City: Cary
State: NC
Your Sex: Female
Where Were You Born? Milwaukee, WI.
Where Do You Live Now? Cary, NC
How Long Have You Lived There? 21 years
Your Age? 56
How many years has it been since you developed your symptoms of fibromyalgia? 12 years diagnosed although I am sure the onset was much earlier
Your Age At Onset of Symptoms? I had sleeping problems since childhood although it was impossible to wake me then, and now I wake up all night regardless of how much activity I do.
What is Your Line of Work? Still working? Health Consultant/work full time with a demanding job which is an ongoing struggle but I need health insurance. My employer shows no compassion despite my doctor writing them a letter twice and me trying to educate them about this condition. I have given them tons to read and have talked about it at length with them. They show no concern and have done nothing to help me in any way. It's very hard to understand such toxic attitudes (which I am sure contributes to my pain). I give my all in service to our members which helps me to feel better despite the organization I work for not showing any caring.
Medical History: tonsils and gallbladder removed
Does Exercise Help? walking moderately 30-45 minutes daily (if possible) offers limited help. Without exercise I definitely feel worse.
What Were Your First Symptoms? Severe ankle pain and stiffening years after I was kicked by a horse
What Are Your Current Symptoms? Widespread muscle throbbing pain everywhere in my body; totally unrefreshing sleep no matter how long I stay in bed; wakefulness at odd hours through the night, urinary frequency (especially at night which further disturbs sleep), excessive fatigue and brain fog much of the time unless I use lots of caffeine (I drink coffee to keep going).I also have muscle spasms regularly.
Did You Ever Have A Long Lasting Virus? I had some virus during childhood that the doctor was unsure of what it was so he loaded me up with antibiotics. Whatever it was, it caused me to have involuntary muscle spasms in my legs and a serious fever.
Any Military Service? No
Chemical or Pesticide Exposure? Yes, I am exposed to all the environmental chemicals in the air, water and food that everyone else is. I am very chemically sensitive and react to all chemicals negatively. I also have a severe shellfish allergy (more pollutants).
How Has Fibro Affected Your Life? It has limited me in so many ways. It's hard for me to travel, do much socially, and I think it would be unfair to get involved in a serious relationship as it causes me to stay home a lot. I go to work, grocery shop as I must, I do take care of my yard which is a struggle but I want to keep going, laundry, like I said, I do the basics of daily living but it is not healthful living as it would be if I didn't have this condition. It's also so hard to look so well and have people believe I feel so terrible everyday. I think my employer doesn't believe how I feel based on their lack of empathy allowing me to have a flexible schedule for the professional job I have, although I do believe in karma.
What Makes Symptoms Worse? Weather changes, stress at work, traveling which is so hard on me, sugar, alcohol
What Makes You Feel Better? low stress, staying home with no schedule, walking outdoors, eating extremely healthfully, petting my cat, low work stress, understanding friends, relaxing
Do Your Symptoms Include Brain Fog? At times depending on how stressed and exhausted I am
How many years has it been since you developed the brain fog associated with fibromyalgia? I think it started when the FM started
Was Your Rate of Decline Fast? No, it came on gradually and then got terrible and has stayed terrible. I tried a couple drugs only a few days as I got such hideous side effects which made me worse. It was so long ago I am having brain fog remembering which I tried... flexiril low dose and celebrex for pain which made it worse and has serious side effects
Have You Tried Avoiding Dietary Fluoride? I never heard this theory before now but my sense is that the chemicals are far more pervasive of an issue than just fluoride exposure. Look at the horrible lawn and pesticide chemicals surrounding us all as well as the air pollution from all the SUV's, automobiles, trucks, etc. I know it sounds funny but I have been brushing my teeth with Ivory soap for the past two years. I read about it being very healthy in an Alternatives subscription. My dentist says I now have the healthiest gums of any of his patients but he says he knows none other than me that brushes with soap. It takes a short time to get used to. I have used other mild soaps too.
Remedies Tried: I have tried a lot of natural approaches-guafinesin, massage (which feels good temporarily and then I feel like I've been beaten the next day), advil, aleve (which I still take on rare occasion when I am in agony). I also a long time ago tried a low dose of desyrel (trazadone) to help my sleep (and it helped some over time) but it caused me weight gain so I dropped off of that. Trading one health problem for another wasn't of interest to me and I really loathe putting drugs into my body which already struggles. I try to eat organically whenever I can. I avoid eating out and haven't eaten meat in over 19 years. I eat a lot of soy products for protein. I also eat lots of veggies and fruits and wash everything carefully. I have a water filter but not reverse osmosis. I drink mostly bottled water but at times, I drink tap water like when I drink coffee at work (which I must often), to stay awake. It would be difficult to make coffee with distilled water there. Other employees also don't know I have this condition (except for the management).
Your Theories: I think that the personality type of those with FM typically are type A, perfectionistic. We all are high achievers and have probably burned out our adrenals trying to be perfect after having been told we were imperfect in our childhoods or somewhere along the dysfunctional line. I'm sure if you look into it, we all either were emotionally, physically or sexually abused or (more likely) all three. We tend to be sensitive types. I think a system can tolerate abuse only so long before it breaks, like a car with it's accelerator to the floor for a long time. Over time, it gets worn down, tired and eventually quits. And couple this with a very polluted environment with oodles of toxins in our food, air and water and voila, we have a body that rebels and says enough is enough=FM.
Are We Missing Any Important Questions? Yes, I think looking into the abuse equation really needs exploring. I never see it mentioned in FM research. It may not be tidy enough to talk about? Also, looking into the emotional make-up of those that get FM (I think many of us are very sensitive and intelligent individuals needs to also be looked into). Anyway, thanks for trying to get some real answers about FM. I swear if we can solve the male impotence problem we surely can solve a much more serious and painful condition like FM. I do think if more men were affected by FM, we would have an effective treatment long before now. But then I think that same thing when it comes to solving breast cancer. Thanks again for looking for some solutions to a very serious and debilitating health issue. I remain hopeful that an answer will come in the near future. I am an optimist which helps me to keep going despite my agonizing painful body. Bless you!

Where Do You Live Now? Cleveland
How Long Have You Lived There? 42 years
Your Age? 42
How many years has it been since you developed your symptoms of fibromyalgia? 19 years
Your Age At Onset of Symptoms? 24
What is Your Line of Work? Still working? Illness struck right after I finished college. Not Working currently. Surviving on the kindness of family.
Medical History: Gallbladder removal. Severe TMJ pain.
Does Exercise Help? Biking. I started slowly. It took 6 years to get up to 20 minutes a day. I still get some soreness from it. I also do some stretching, but if I overdo it, I pay the next badly.
What Were Your First Symptoms? Muscle pain in legs right above the knees and then into the lower legs, then into the shoulders as it progressed over several months My energy level started going up and down. Then eventually I lost all my energy to do anything. Finally my weight dropped way down and I got very weak.It took several years to finally hit bottom.
What Are Your Current Symptoms? Low-level, all-over pain, like I wear a suit of armor or a tight fitting wet suit. Lots of fatigue, especially in the afternoon hours. But this is a big improvement over what I used to have. I had it all- panic, heart palps, digestive upset, you name it. A lot of those are now either gone or are much better so that they don't bother me. Even the Volemia (lightheadedness from low blood pressure) is better, though I still have to wear support hose all day long.
Did You Ever Have A Long Lasting Virus? My brother-in-law and I both had a bad virus about 6 months before my symptoms started. He was diagnosed with CFS, which he eventually got over. I was the one that got the pain associated with FMS.
Any Military Service? None.
Chemical or Pesticide Exposure? Some household chemicals. I had all my amalgams removed. I'm not sure if it helped or not.
How Has Fibro Affected Your Life? I stay at home. I've done a lot to make it better, and I probably could handle part-time work now. But I gave up a possible teaching career and further education because of it. I even gave up playing in my rock band. That one really hurt.
What Makes Symptoms Worse? Cold, damp weather. Eating the wrong foods, especially wheat and dairy, and soda pop is a big no-no. I cannot tolerate any alcohol. Emotional stress of any kind is a big trigger. Not getting enough sleep is a guarantee of a flair up.
What Makes You Feel Better? Chiropractic adjustments are a great help, but the effects don't last all that long. But I think it's helped my overall health. Changing my diet was a big help. Getting the wheat out. I have to eat Omega 3 fat fish every day or I notice a big rise in symptoms. I still take the fish pills but they don't work as well as eating fish. Before I went to the chiropractor, I spent three years being treated by an acupuncturist who did Voll's electro therapy with it. It was the thing that really got me to start functioning again. The only reason I stopped doing it was the doctor moved away (he went broke because he was too kind to too many of us with this illness and the medical industry was in no mood to support him. We will never get a cure as long as we let the medical industry act this way. I vote with my dollars every time I got to the chiropractor and every time I change my diet in a healthy way.
Do Your Symptoms Include Brain Fog? Yes I have some brain fog. It especially gets bad in the afternoons. I suspect hormonal issues due to this. If I nap, both the deep muscle pain and brain fog will subside somewhat-at least enough to function again. Regardless, I do not think as clearly as I did when I was healthy. I know there are some hormonal reasons for this because a nutritional doctor I saw said my cortisol levels drop out of sight every afternoon. But I'm trying to find natural ways to fix the endocrine

What is Your Line of Work? Still working? Volunteer, homemaker, mom
Medical History: Gallbladder removed 14 years ago, facial reconstruction after auto accident about 19 years ago.
Does Exercise Help? I have been only doing repetitive motion exercise for 15 minute intervals, then resting 1 hr., also stretching helps.
What Were Your First Symptoms? Neck and upper back muscle pain that didn't go away with heat or aspirin.
What Are Your Current Symptoms? Doing much better now that after 1 yr. of active searching, I am going to a chiropractor/acupuncturist who has been massaging my muscles. Still have pain but 60% less. Still have chronic sinus problems, bloating, fogginess, but as the pain subsides my depression and sleep loss is getting much better.
Did You Ever Have A Long Lasting Virus? Yes, many bouts of sinus infections requiring antibiotics and steroids.
Any Military Service? No
Chemical or Pesticide Exposure? No
How Has Fibro Affected Your Life? Not such a "fun mom" as I think I can be. Also can't keep up with housework and chores and everyday activities. I have missed out on alot these past 10 years! I want my life back and will try anything to get it.
What Makes Symptoms Worse? Not sure. Some days are just unbearable. Others, not too bad.
What Makes You Feel Better? The twice a week muscle massage therapy. It has helped so much. My neck has so much more movement.
Do Your Symptoms Include Brain Fog? Yes, but not all the time. I forget entire stories people tell me and find it difficult to focus sometimes. Forget much more than I used to (alot more than age related acceptable amount).
How many years has it been since you developed the brain fog associated with fibromyalgia? I have only had the brain fog for 1 year now, even though muscle pain and other symptoms started much earlier.
Was Your Rate of Decline Fast? No. I felt it was gradual. Was able to suck it up for many years and then I just blew up!! I am not going to stop trying things till I get relief and as I do I will tell everyone I know suffering from this.
Have You Tried Avoiding Dietary Fluoride? No. After reading this website, I will be aware of what water I drink, etc.
Remedies Tried: I have tried muscle relaxers, naproxin, hydrocodone, bulbital (caffeine pills for bad headaches), prednisolone, chiropractic adjustments, OTC mylanta, tums, milk of magnesia, sinus medications . .
Your Theories: The only comments I have right now are I started to go to a new chiropractor/acupuncturist. He has been massaging out my chronic muscle spasms. And after six weeks, twice a week for 45 minutes, I am very grateful to be feeling much better in the neck/back muscle pain category. Have also, at his suggestion, given up carbonated beverages of all kinds. I am only drinking water and green tea. Much more hydrated now which has helped alot with muscle massage. He could not even touch them at first. Took two weeks just to rehydrate. I thought drinking three drinks a day was enough. You need so much more to keep your body flushing toxins. I am now up to 6 8 oz. glasses of water a day. Also he has suggested apple cider vinegar before meals to help with reflux. I have not tried this yet cause he just told me about it yesterday. I am currently not taking meds. except clynamicin for sinus infection. I have been on some kind of antibiotics almost continually for past 10 years. I wish everyone who reads this relief and want to say, please keep up your search for someone to help you. My regular MD just kept prescribing more meds which worked temporarily, but after six months or so no longer effective. I have been through at least 3 chiros. 3 MD's all kinds of MRI and barium swallows, x-rays that show nothing. (I could pose as a night light, hee hee.) I am so grateful to have found someone who is actually helping me and cares about progress and symptoms. Keep searching and try to stay positive and keep sense of humor. May God bless you all with relief from this life-destroying nightmare.

Your Theories: Recently I went to the Dr. with my husband who is a cardiologist, I told him about my Fibro. and diabetes and he tested me on a new machine he had gotten to test the adrenal glands on patients like myself who have chest pain but no heart problems the results shocked him he found that I have PPS.,which means basically that when my body should put out adrenaline it puts out the opposite hormone norepinephrine which causes my blood pressure to drop real low when I get up too do anything and it is almost impossible to do anything,on the other hand the other hormone causes me to not be able to sleep in which normal sleep aids do not help and the treatment normally used cause me to have a bad reaction! I have also noticed that when I eat certain foods that I feel worse, just the light push of having a bowel movement makes me very bad,I also have a low thyroid, and my female hormones are all messed up which makes me worse for at least 2 weeks a month actually all the hormones we produce are not what they should be in me.

What Were Your First Symptoms? I first noticed pain and stiffness in my hands and feet and back when waking in the mornings, would improve as day went on, and then worsens at night. Trouble walking at night, brain fog, flu-like symptoms that would drain me physically and I would have to rest in bed at least a day or two. But symptoms would vary from day to day.
What Are Your Current Symptoms? Symptoms still vary from day to day, some days i'm real exhausted, hands burn and sting now, and my joints all over my body hurts and some make popping sounds, shoulders are starting to hurt more. What Makes Symptoms Worse? Some days just a firm-touch can cause discomfort, it's affected by activity level, weather changes, sleep patterns, life stress, certain foods eaten
What Makes You Feel Better? Taking ultracets for pain, getting the right amount of sleep. Stopping and resting a day if I need to. Body massage

How many years has it been since you developed the brain fog associated with fibromyalgia? The last 3 years have been the worst
Was Your Rate of Decline Fast? Yes, Doctor put me on Ambien CR 12.5, hoping I'd feel better if I slept better.. and I did for a while. I'm off the Ambien now and sleeping better. The Ambien in my opinion made my brain fog worse
Have You Tried Avoiding Dietary Fluoride? No
Remedies Tried: Just the Ambien for sleep, and the Ultracets for pain.
Your Theories: My Theory is that after I injured my back the first time is when this all started.. maybe from the trauma I experienced with my back. Also two years later I re injured the same area of my back but when the disc material slipped out this time it was on the opposite side and they will not do surgery cause it's too risky, that's about the time all this fibromyalgia started getting worse.
