"In anatomy, the intestine is the segment of the alimentary canal extending from the stomach to the anus and, in humans and other mammals, consists of two segments, the small intestine and the large intestine. In humans, the small intestine is further subdivided into the duodenum, jejunum and ileum while the large intestine is subdivided into the cecum and colon.
[...]
The intestinal tract can be broadly divided into two different parts, the small and large intestine. Grayish-purple in color and about 35 mm (1.5 inches) in diameter, the small intestine is the first and longest, measuring 6 meters (20 feet) long average in an adult man. Shorter and relatively stockier, the large intestine is a dark reddish color, measuring roughly 1.5 meters (5 feet) long on average." (Wikipedia)

[YEA]  05/16/2007: Wanda from East Bay, CA writes: "Have had some digestive challenges lately. Last night, used ACV in water just prior to a bowl of oatmeal. About an hour later, I swallowed a garlic capsule. This morning after swishing peanut oil for about 20 minutes, I drank the juice of one lemon mixed with about a TBSP of baking powder and water. My nose began to run. After a breakfast of French Toast, bacon, and strong coffee, there was an almost immediate cleansing. I'm not sure which concoction did the job, or if it was the harmonious work of them all. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and kudos for the good advice.

I feel blessed"

[YEA]  05/12/2007: Dawn from Lebanon, INDIANA writes: "I have been suffering from partial bowel obstruction from adhesions due to a liposuction that went bad back in the 90's. I have suffered from severe pain, nausea and hemerroids due to the inability to fully cleanse myself out because of the blockage. This has been on going for the past 5 years. I would have an "episode" at least once a week, sometimes 2 and 3 times a week. The pain was unbearable and would literally take my breath away. Since I started taking one shot of ACV daily I have yet to have an "episode". I now have the best movements in years! I am completely amazed! Also, I suffer or should I say used to suffer from arthritis in my hips. I have absolutely no pain at all now and I know it is from the ACV because I haven't done anything else to remedy. I wish someone would have told me about this a long time ago. It is the simpliest thing in the world to do and it is all natural! God Bless Apple Cider Vinegar! If you haven't tried it, YOU SHOULD! Also, my complexion is glowing!"

10/28/2009: Karen from Fayetteville, Nc replies: "I have a question for Dawn. I believe I may be suffering from a bowel obstruction although I am not altogether sure. Until recently I have had regular, normal sized movements, now they seem to be 'skinny' in size, as though they are trying to sqeeze pass an obstruction. What I wanted to know from you is: what does a shot of acv consist of and how do you take it."
12/04/2009: April from West Chester, Pa replies: "While I truly believe in natural remedies and their ability to work where Western medicine fails, the symptoms Karen is describing are warning signs of several serious colon and/or bowel issues. Karen, if you've not already done so, please make an appointment with a gastroenterologist to rule out something that could be life-threatening."
12/05/2009: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, USA replies: "If this only just happened and you have always been regular otherwise I'd opt for a colonic before taking to panic warnings and fear. Sounds more to me like you're just seriously backed up! It doesn't sound like Karen has tried any alternatives first. Karen, what are your eating habits? Cut out breads, pastas, meats and add in veggies big time and fruit. I would opt towards looking to that first. Just a thought..."
12/05/2009: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, USA replies: "Karen, one other suggestion- Go to renegadehealth.com and watch episode #451 called "help, i'm having trouble pooping" and also read the responses below the screen as there are a couple of people who give some very good and knowledgeable advice in regards to this issue. It's a little more in depth than my previous post to you but basically says the same. Hope this helps! Lisa"
12/05/2009: Robert Henry from Ten Mile, Tn Usa replies: "Any bowel problem I've had has just been temporary, but my wife has suffered her whole life. At age 65, she had her first colonoscopy and the doctor told her that her colon was all out of place and not normal. We then began a colon cleanse and all heck broke loose and she ended up in bad shape as the mucoid plaque had her plugged good. Called an experienced hydro therapist which convinced her that she needed a colonic to flush all the year's old stuff out. It took several colonics, but it has changed my wife's health and life.

After much research , we are convinced that the intestinal plaque had built up over the years and had weighed down her colon out of it's normal shape. Now we do a colon cleanse every year to avoid this problem. If you have bowel problems, I'd suggest you find a slow cleanse and persue this solution. Also talk to a Hydro Therapist because they can help you through this. When you remove this plaque, you will probably have a healing crisis due to the toxins you have released.

Our Anti-Aging Doctor says the liver is the most important organ, but the natural folks say it is your bowels. We have found that you have to take care of both.

The folks that have recommended veggies over meat are right on. We still do meat, but not like we once did.

Also, I'd like more folks to write in about staying in good health."
12/06/2009: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, USA replies: "Robert, I always look forward to your posts! They're always interesting to me and your "folksiness" is always backed by some pretty substantial knowledge. Gotta love it! As for being preachy, I don't think you are at all. I also think more people need to be educated on their health. It's true- the more you can alkalinize the better the health of the body. As for the bowel/liver debate, they really go hand in hand hence why they recommend coffee enemas. I'm glad to hear that you and your wife are so conscious in your health. I only wish more people would go to the source of where so many of these ailments begin from that everyone writes of on this site but, as I have learned, we can only begin from where we are. People don't shift easily in their habits. I can't remember who said it but they said it was easier to change their religion than their eating habits.

Thanks for all your knowledge. Peace, Lisa"

DIET, LICORICE EXTRACT, XYLITOL CLEANSE

[YEA]  09/30/2008: Sue from Santa Monica, CA writes: "I was having abdominal pain and burning last week just below the belly button to the right. I kept thinking it had to be muscle pain from doing stomach crunches at the gym, but then I had a repeating dream where the image of salad kept coming up and I woke up with the words "salad tongs" on my brain -- ha ha. So I realized duh, it was probably a partial food obstruction and my body was trying to get me to move it through. I usually avoid bread because of this issue (obstruction in the small intestine), but had eaten an entire thin-crusted pizza a few days before, thinking it would be okay. Not so!

First thing I did was start drinking a ton of water and eat salad (but of course) at every meal. Then I bought DGL (licorice extract) to help the inflammation and burning. The licorice extract stopped the burning in less than 12 hours (2 capsules, one morning one evening). Then I did my newly discovered "cleanse" which is basically to induce the runs by putting xylitol in my tea (see my previous post on xylitol's unexpected side effects!). 2 teaspoons later my system was cleaning itself out for the next 3 hours of everything in the bowels. Go xylitol! I am going to continue the easy to digest foods (chicken, salad, etc) and the licorice extract for a while but things appear to be back to normal.

I had a friend who also had been eating too much bread and was wondering why her uncomfortable bloated stomach wouldn't go away even though she was passing #2s just fine (no constipation). I told her it was probably an obstruction and to clean it out! She did some acupressure massage on her stomach and took a few teaspoons of flax seed oil and that did the trick. I wish more people would be aware that bread can cause this issue!"

This seems to be more of a problem with people than they know. I am also of American Indian heritage and don't believe the Indian has a tolerance for wheat (among many other items in the Anglo diet).

I find that the fiber in raw vegetables requires more water in my diet.

Thanks for the tip about licorice. With all the needle like pains in my abdomin a couple hours after eating, I am going to try it."

MULTIPLE REMEDIES

11/17/2010: Kile from Chicago, Il writes: "Hi everybody, I recently tried liquid diet, for 3 days and it really works. First I would try antibiotics for a few days that will kill some of the bacteria that you might have. Second I would try lots of water, with juices, green vegetables and cleansing teas. No meat, no dairy. Only liquid. Sometimes the food is stuck in you for years, that food needs to come out. Also to help with removing all that waste from inside you, use natural prunelax it will help you go to the bathroom and get the old stool out. And you are going to need, 80 billion probiotics (ultimate flora) and enzymes (digest gold). This will help clean your stomach, colon, and help digest food better. Also learn about Hydrogen breath and candida. Then go to a specialist to check your stomach and colon. Also get a blood test to check for ph. You must do alot of searching. Good luck."

PSYLLIUM HUSK AND BENTONITE CLAY SHAKE

[YEA]  03/10/2011: Joanie from Sydney, Australia writes: "Although not a typically a "shake" the psyllium husk and hydrated bentonite clay drink is nothing short of miraculous. I've been using the program of one level tbsp of psyllium husk and the same amount of hydrated bentonite clay in a glass of apple juice (fresh and/or organic recommended) for a month now, with results including better digestion and frequent/regular/daily and easier to pass bowel movements.

Unanticipated benefits include increased energy levels, decreasing fatigue and tiredness. Sleep patterns are more uniform, improving mild insomnia - this may be due to a healthier digestive tract and the associated absorption of toxins by the bentonite clay solution. Also find skin and eyes much clearer, with a marked reduction in redness on face. Stress levels lower but this may be due to a total overhaul of diet as well as the psyllium and bentonite clay shake compliment. Recommend regime at advice of your friendly Heath food outlet, nutritionist and/or doctor. Best to start with one shake per day on empty stomach followed by water(may be warmed to stimulate intestines if wanted) and adapting a healthy(ier) diet. Over next 1-2 weeks slowly increase from 1 to 2 shakes per day."

Replies
03/11/2011: Joanie from Sydney, Australia replies: "Forgot to add- this option is a long term bowel cleanse routine, and you can include the shakes with your normal everyday eating plan nor will it require any untimely need to rush to the restroom either. Ultimately you want to slowly work your way up to 2-5 shakes a day as per your own individual comfort level. Slowly increase the psyllium husk and hydrated bentonite shake frequency using your body to gauge it's effectiveness (ie. Symptoms that include bloating/constipation, or far too frequent movements) - suggest reduce amount of shakes and ensure you drink your daily intake of water. Long term effects on the colon aim to cleanse impacted matter and break down the mulcoid plaque lining. Ultimately leaving way to better absorb nutrients via this passage, regulating bowel movements, and improving health (bonus associated benefits may include reducing symptoms of non- related digestive ailments). Personally I have found a marked reduction in small headaches, minor sleeplessness, lightheadedness and fewer common colds as well. I've only used this program for about a month, but look forward to the long- term results."

RAW FRUITS

YEA

[YEA]  10/16/2011: Simran99 from Singapore writes: "What and when it happened: I was plagued with blood in my stool almost continously for 2 weeks.

How it happened: Was feeling constipated for a week already. Usually I have bowel movements daily in the morning. There had been 2 days this week that I haven't gone for 2 days in a row. Then I had a single episode of severe constipation where the stool was very very dry and borderline impossible to evacuate. Ever since that ONE super dry bowel movement, I realized I had pain in my anal area (feels like the outside region, outer skin), so I thought it may be either a hemmorid or anal fissure, not sure which one.

More details: There was fresh red blood (sometimes dripping) each time I had a bowel movement accompanied by pain when having a bowel movement. The pain scared me each time I went to the toilet. Went to the doctor after freaking out, doctor would not give hemmoroid medicine without putting a scope up my rear end (which I declined).

Medicines I tried: Lactulose. This medicine softened the stool effectively and made for easy evacuation but didn't cure the blood in stool or the pain problem, albeit the pain was lessened. Tried this for a week and gave up. Stopped this and got constipated again.

Other stuff I tried: Psyllium husk. That didn't work. Then tried the Salt Water Flush. The flush worked as intended but made no difference to my condition. Also tried Vitagen. Didn't work. Then tried Yakult, didn't work either. When doing this, I avoided white flour or products made from them. Not working, concluded high fiber, salt water flush and probiotics are not the solution.

What WORKED (within 2 weeks) : By chance I had to go home for the semester break and being at home I got some really healthy food, unlike the shop food I had to eat when outside (no choice). My mom put me on a raw food diet (mostly FRUITS, local fruits). And within 1 week I realized there was no pain or blood when having a bowel movement. Within one-and-half weeks, I realized I was totally cured from this thing.

Results: I knew I was cured because bowel transit time was significantly reduced to around 12 hours (measured later by intake of okra, the seeds, after being cured). I was sometimes having 2 bowel movements a day!!! Yes, I was taken by surprise. :-) The stool was as soft as colgate. No pain, no blood. (and remains the same today, eating normally (unhealthy etc. ), 2 months after curing myself)

Details of the cure: Note that I am a vegetarian so I don't eat meat, eggs or fish or their products. When doing the cure, I eliminated ALL processed foods. If its not raw and FRESH (exception for tea), It doesn't get past my mouth. Simple as that.

Morning Food: One red apple, one green apple, one pear, one orange, 3 small bananas, and occasionally a whole guava (get the super soft, super ripe one, specifics: "green apple guava"). Do this for breakfast and you will get bowel movements within the same hour. This pattern becomes consistent after a week.

Afternoon: 1/5th of a Papaya 1/5th of a pineapple 2 red tomatoes half a guava.

Tea time: 1 cup Green Black Tea Combo, 2 cups of green juice (made of water a bit of each-> cabbage chinese parsley super very little leeks (strong taste) kale celery). Drink slowly based on how much liquid you can tolerate. I can finish the whole thing in one go.

Dinner time: Green juice (like tea time) again. Then food like afternoon (replace the guava with a mango).

Do this for 2 weeks...... And that's how you PERMANENTLY cure a bleeding anus. :-)

Side Effects: If you have constipation, it will be cured. Do not do this if you want to remain constipated."

[YEA]  "10/16/2011: Simran99 from Singapore replies: "Note: Methods That Actually Worked in Helping Ease Pain from the Anal Bleeding before it was completely cured: Changing the toilet seating position from my usual squatting position to SITTING on the toilet with the legs extended in front and spine tilted backwards. This really helped in evacuation and significantly reduced the pain felt during.

The squatting position is the worst position to use when having a bleeding anus. It causes the fresh red blood to drip quite a lot for some reason accompanied with severe pain. The seated position mentioned above significantly reduces the dripping blood as well as the pain.

Another hint that I was cured was that firstly, the pain in the special seated position became from very less to non-existent. Only then I dared to try my usual squatting position, due to the severe pain and bleeding that usually accompanied it.

When the first time I tried squatting, there was very little pain but NO BLEEDING (unlike the usual severe pain and bleeding). By the next day, whatever little pain in the squatting position I had became non-existent. All of this while I was on the RAW fruits diet. The ability to go back to my usual squatting position without any pain or bleeding was the final sign that whatever I had was COMPLETELY cured.

I got the the "special-seating" information from an earlier post in EarthClinic. Thanks guys!

Probable cause of the severe constipation: Over-Consumption of Almonds. Was eating them like snacks. Only later realized that many people get constipated by over-eating them. I was doing this for a week already before the bleeding episode. Stopped when I found out."

TWISTED COLON REMEDIES

04/20/2010: Wanda from Ruckersville, Va writes: "Does anyone have a cure for a twisted colon. I go thru periods of severe cramping. The colon became twisted on it's own so surely there must be a way to untwist it naturally."

Replies
04/23/2010: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Wanda,

Typically, a twisted colon is due to a poor diet. Mostly, lack of fiber but also sometimes it occurs because of a Caesarean section in women. You might want to look at your diet because that is the answer to finding the natural way to help your colon. Start eating a lot more fiber.

Hope this helps you get back your health, Lisa"
