Treatment for Autoimmune Diseases

Last Modified on Apr 19, 2014

What Is Autoimmune Disease?

Affecting nearly 50 million Americans according to the American Autoimmune Related Disease Association (AARDA), Autoimmune Disease is an expansive disorder that appears to be on the upswing. A result of the overactivity of the immune system, Autoimmune Disease arises when the body’s innate defense mechanism, the immune system, begins attacking healthy body cells as if they were foreign. Essentially, the body turns against itself and tries to combat these otherwise healthy cells as if they were irritants or allergens. The result can be devastating to the body causing abnormal organ growth and function.

In all actuality, as many as 80 different Autoimmune Diseases exist with the common thread among them all being the systemic response of the immune system fighting itself. While the cause of Autoimmune Disease is largely unknown, typical theories regarding the development of the disease include bacterial or viral infections, specific drugs, chemical irritants, and environmental irritants. With the broad range of types of autoimmune disease, the symptoms also vary widely. However, the most common symptoms include fatigue, fever, and pervasive ill feeling. Many types of Autoimmune Disease also present periods of intensified reaction or flare-ups and periods of lessened symptoms during remission.

In addition to its numerous types of disease, Autoimmune Disease also affects many different parts of the body. The most commonly affected tissues and organs include the endocrine glands, connective tissue, blood vessels, red blood cells, skin, muscles, and joints. As such, the most common diseases consist of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, multiple sclerosis, celiac disease, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, Graves’ disease, Type 1 diabetes, and a number of others.

Natural Treatments for Autoimmune Disease

No matter what type of Autoimmune Disease an individual is experiencing, natural treatment options are available and widely effective. As many Autoimmune Diseases are caused by or at least worsened by irritants and allergens, many react well to dietary changes and supplements. Following an anti-inflammatory diet free of gluten and casein may help individuals. Additionally, eating a diet high in nutrients from hardy vegetables and natural sources is crucial. Supplements that aid in the fight against Autoimmune Disease include vitamin D, Omega-2 fatty acids such as fish oil, green tea, and rose hip.

Whether treating holistically or strictly naturally, an individual must get to know his or her body and determine the causal factors of the disease itself. Only then can an individual find the right supplements and treatment plans to promote wellness.

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  08/24/2010: Bibi from Nashville, Tn: "Rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and other autoimmune disorders MIGHT be cleared up by following a gluten free-casein free diet. I have been following a gluten free diet for over a year, and have improved, but still have some problems. My understanding is that casein (milk protein) is metabolized the same as gluten. By following a gluten free, casein free diet, I have read that people have also been cured of autistic disorders and even schizophrenia. I'm having trouble abstaining from the milk protein, but thought this info would be helpful."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  04/07/2011: Trudy from Harbor Springs, Michigan, Usa replies: "I have been battling autoimmune disease for many years. For the last 10, without any drugs. As many others who have autoimmune, as time goes on, other autoimmune problems begin to develop, like allergies, and so forth. When I stopped using perscription immune suppressants, I became determined to find the root of the problem and cure it naturally. Not knowing how to do that, I have seen a naturopath, an acupuncturist, a homeopathic practitioner, and 2 different chiropractors practicing energy techniques. When I say I have seen them, I mean I have spent months/years and endless amounts of money trying to get a cure for my problem. Each one helped in their own way, but could not cure my problem. Over the years however, I took with me alot of knowledge about natural healing. One day, while visiting a friend, and feeling particularly horrible, I picked up a book she had called "The Autoimmune Epidemic" by Donna Jackson Nakazawa and began to read it. I couldn't put it down. Why hadn't I read something like it sooner? It described chapter by chapter why our immune systems go haywire, due to being overexposed to pollution, chemicals and preservatives in our food. Our immune systems are designed to protect us from foreign dangers and act as our defense system. However, when it is exposed to alarming amounts of pollutants, chemicals and preservatives, it gets overloaded and begins attacking everything. Hence, we get sick.

Logically, if we reduce the toxins that we are taking in, we reduce the autoimmune response. There were a number of examples in the book of persons who did this, one doctor even coming back from sure death.

How do we do that? Number one in importance, eat organic foods. If you can't do that, at the very least, do not eat processed foods or anything in a box. Read labels on everything. If it has ingredients you don't recognize, you probably shouldn't eat it. Eat way more fruits and vegetables than anything else you consume. Raw is better. Eat very little meat unless you can get organic meats. Eliminate gluten and reduce your dairy intake or eliminate that too. Use digestive enzymes and seek to improve your digestion as much as possible. I supplement with antioxidants also.

Second, take note of your household cleaning products and your personal hygiene products. Whatever touches your skin gets absorbed into your body and eventually your organs. Soaps, deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, hand cream, and especially hair dyes are loaded with chemicals and perfumes. Cleaning products are toxic and shouldn't be breathed in or come into contact with your skin. I have changed to using homemade soap, organic toothpastes, organic shampoos and creams and henna hair dye. For cleaning, I use ACV and water. It not only cleans really well, but it disinfects too. Laundry soaps are full of toxic chemicals and perfumes, but the dryer sheets are especially toxic. I make my own laundry soap, and use ACV in the fabric softener port for anti static dryer use.

Finally, chemical pollutants are everywhere, and much of this problem is what we breathe in. To the extent possible, wherever you live, reduce the toxic fumes you breathe in outside your home, and inside your home, for heavens sakes, get rid of that perfumey air freshener in your house and your car! They're toxic.

It has been a long difficult road, but I finally have improved my health immensely. I am not cured. This will be a way of life for me, but I can finally say that I have many more normal days now than I do sick days. Much of your health can be determined on how you take care of yourself. I didn't say it would be easy, but reversing the damage we've done to ourselves will take time, so be patient. Obviously, adding some exercise will reduce stress and keep your circulation moving.

One last note about starting such a regimen. For about 2 months after I started this, I felt terrible. My body was detoxifying itself, and it was not pleasant. But I knew that only good would result if I continued, so I did. By the end of the first month, I could notice some improvements, and each month for about 6 months I continued to see improvement in the way I felt. It has now been one year, and I can honestly say that I feel better than I have in years, almost normal.

Best wishes to you, and I do hope this helps someone."

04/08/2011: Trudy from Harbor Springs, Michigan, Usa replies: "I forgot something VERY important. Eliminate sugar from your diet. Sugar, especially refined sugar and corn syrup is terrible for you, and causes a slew of health problems. Reduce your intake of caffiene and alcohol, as these are of no benefit either. If you can keep in in mind that your body needs only what can be GOOD for it, feed it what it can benefit from, and eliminate the rest."
05/22/2011: Carla from Easton, Pa replies: "Dear Trudy,

This information that you have provided will truly be helpful to me. May I ask what ACV Stands for. Also, would it be possible for you to share some of you household and body cleansing mixtures please? Your mentioned homemade soap. I m so interested. This illness is so new to me. I sm so glad that I stumbled across you message. Have a great day and I look forward to the news that you have been healed. I believe that you are on your way. I look forward to that same."

09/28/2011: Shawn from Portland, Or replies: "ACV stands for Apple Cider Vinegar. When purchasing a bottle, make sure you look for one that is cloudy and has what is called "the mother, " or sediment. The clarified cheap stuff that you see in most supermarkets is not the best kind to get. A wonderful brand is _____'s, available at almost any health food store. The Trader Joe's brand isn't half bad."

03/08/2012: Had from White River Junction, Vermont replies: "If this would help, drink RAW milk, what makes milk so bad is the paster/homig.--It kills the milk, so all the benificial bacteria etc... Becomes toxic. Also, look on Natural News. Com, the commercial milk industry is gross, beyond belief. Indepentant testing of the milk turned up, blood, pus, fecal matter, toxins, pharmacuticals, hormones and much more in the milk from the grocery store. So get on real Raw milk from a farm that goes organically. And if you eat any other type of dairy(yogurt, cheese etc) again, go RAW only, you will all of a sudden NOT react to milk and your digestion will also improve as well as your immune system. I am all for the coconut milk/oils, as I use/like these as well. For supplimentation you may want to look as Serrapeptase, that is a digestive emzyme from silk worms that eats inflammation, dead tissue, scar tissue, etc.... (www.serrapaptase.info) So if you stop eating what makes you sick, and this enzyme clears out the damage so your body can heal. You also mentioned wheat free, a good book on why is 'Wheat Belly', I don't take everything the man writes as gold (he put in use of splenda, ??? and using a microwave to cook, ??? I know! ) but, it gives you a through heads up on what to avoid, the badness of 'Gluten Free' foods and listing of what is great to eat all the time, occationally, and don't eat it. I hope this helps, Good Health to you."
03/08/2012: Had from White River Jct, Vermont replies: "There is a cheap book out as well, 101 uses for vinegar (something close to that). It is the BEST thing I've found for cleaning w/o killing yourself w/poison fumes from cleaning products. Laundry, floors, countertops, bathrooms. Is anti-bacterial/viral and deoterizer, smell dissapates fast and leaves behind brand new 'shine', like you just put in new counter/floor etc.... I picked up book, it's smallish, for $2 on a 'let's see what it says?' , I bought more and sent them out to friends who where interested in cleaner/healthier living or had health problems, they are shocked at how completely it cleans just about everything in your house and more, I am told my house always smells 'clean and fresh'."
02/24/2013: Fatima from Saint Paul, Mn replies: "Thank you very very much. Can I ask what is your problem? How did you decide to stop medication? I have Autoimmune hepatitis. My doctor says I will die if I stop taking prednisone."
05/31/2013: Jennywren from Perth, Western Australia replies: "I've heard the Paleo diet with an autoimmune protocol is very good for auto-immune diseases. Paleo allows you to eat organic/free-range/grassfed meat, fish and seafood; no grains (bread, pasta, rice, etc); no legumes (beans); no dairy; no refined stuff; lots of fruit and veggies. Add to that the autoimmune protocol (no nightshades - tomatoes, red pepper, eggplant, chilli. No nuts/seeds. No caffeine or alcohol). The premise behind it is that autoimmune disease comes from leaky gut, and you need to heal your digestive tract before you get better. It's meant to take anywhere between 4-6 weeks and several months to notice any change.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto's. It's been only 3 days on the diet but I'm hopeful. Anything to get off the meds!

Just thought this might be of help to some. If you Google paleo and autoimmune there's a fair amount of information out there."

Dysautonomia Remedies

06/27/2013: Leya from Slc, Ut: "Hi, I have been diagnosed with Dysautonomia (I suppose not officially, since it was an alternative doctor who diagnosed me). I have been suffering from a variety of symptoms, from profuse excessive sweating (hands, feet and underarms), facial flushing and inability to regulate temperature, to feeling weak, fatigued and highly sensitive to any sort of stressor-- Even something like having to speak to someone at the grocery store can cause all sorts of symptoms. I live in fear every day that what I eat in the morning will exacerbate my symptoms at night when I want to leave the house. This means I have an almost perfect diet-- lots of fruits and vegetables, a few whole grains, no sugar, no dairy or gluten (because of allergies), no instant yeast, and plenty of legumes and beans. I can barely exercise, I can't go out in the sun, and I have a plethora of allergies because when the autonomic nervous system is dysfunctioning the body can't digest, assimilate or have a good immune response to certain allergens.

So, what I'd like to ask is that you add a section having to do with Dysautonomia. I haven't been able to find a medical alternative place of discussion to find out what will help this.

A few things I've found that have helped with Dysautonomia for me are brain exercises (I sweat more on my right side, so doing left brain exercises like sodoku have helped a great deal), a good diet, stretching, aerobic exercise and meditation/visualization."

However, I still felt tired, weak, heat intolerant, profous sweating etc. I have recently consumed fresh Moringa leaves and felt a remarkable difference next day. I was very energetic, up-beat and felt on top of the world. This is the first time I have felt this great since my first episode of dysautonomia, which started during 2003. I trust you will experience similar results.

God's blessings."

Environment and Food Triggers

05/09/2011: Kortni from Sonora, Ca: "Getting to the root of autoimmunity is basically peeling all the layers of negatives that we bombard our body with. This could be food allergies (gluten, milk, etc), even if you don't react, I'm highly allergic to gluten but nothing happens to me when I eat it (not noticable anyways, one of the factos of autoimmune hepatits causing cirrhosis at 25yo). Vaccines and heavy metal poisoning which can be chelated out and helped with homeopathics. Diet is the most important and finding a doctor who can help you peel back all the layers to restore your health. It is treatable, I know people that had autoimmune hepatitis and cirrhosis that are 100% cured from figuring out all their triggers (pollutants, heavy metals, food allergies, emotional traumas, vitamin deficiency's, etc.)"

General Feedback

01/13/2012: Sophie from Dayton, Ohio, Usa: "Hello All! I got some very interesting information regarding auto-immune disorders from my ob/gyn this week, and thought I would share. This Dr. is open to natural remedies and alternative therapies, so I take a lot of stock in what he has to say. I was asking about thyroid disease, since this has been cropping up among the women in my family recently. He told me that thyroid disease is an auto-immune disorder, where the immune system becomes confused and begins to attack healthy tissues. I asked why this would happen, and here is what he said:

9 out of 10 cases of auto-immune disease happen in women. This is because women's immune systems are designed to be able to partially shut down to allow a pregnancy. A growing fetus is seen by the body as foreign tissue, since half of its DNA came from the father. For this reason, the immune system has to be suppressed so that the mother's body will accept the baby, otherwise all pregnancies would be miscarried. The male immune system does not have the ability to shut down to accept foreign tissues.

In an auto-immune disorder, the immune system becomes corrupted or confused. This is especially likely if the woman has had a pregnancy, since the system has been shut down and then "rebooted". Problems can occur with the "reboot". The Dr. Said that this can also happen if the woman is exposed to any foreign tissue, not just a pregnancy, for example, a blood transfusion. It can also happen in men who have been exposed to foreign tissue, but it is much less likely due to the design of the male immune system. Drugs that are taken to suppress the immune system, such as for organ transplants, can cause this process in men artificially.

This makes you wonder about vaccines using fetal cells and other tissues, GMO foods, and other products made with human tissue or DNA, or even animal DNA. How does this affect our immune systems? There is so much auto-immune disease today - lupus, thyroid disease, arthritis... makes you wonder!

Hopefully this information will aid others in their quest for health."

Gulliane Barre Syndrome

01/31/2012: Bananka from Bali, Indonesia: "One afternoon, two months after I had my first baby, I suddenly could not move my lower lip and chin was numb. The next morning I woke up, looked in mirror, and shrieked to find that my whole face was frozen. My mouth drooped, eyes only close halfways, couldn't move anything. I could open my mouth a bit, but eating and drinking was a messy struggle.

After tests, the doctor(s) vaguely concluded it was GBS, Guillane Barre Syndrome.

No one can tell me for sure what brought this on. One very reasonable theory is utter-exhaustion. I thought I was just still exhausted from giving birth, first time mama, but now looking back I know I was insanely exhausted, because I couldn't even stay alert long enough to read a few lines of books or messages on phone.

A few weeks before it happened, I noticed that there was no position comfortable enough for me to sleep in. Even laying my head on soft pillow, I felt like my ears were constantly folded causing pain, but they weren't! I could still walk, but slowly because my whole being was in pain. I could not bend my neck down far enough to be able to see toes/tummy/whatever. My blood pressure went up to 180/90 . I was advised to stop breastfeeding to ease on exhaustion and to take blood pressure medicine. But all it did was just adding more anxiety, and it didn't do anything for the blood pressure. So I went with my gut feeling to stop on the meds, and resume breastfeeding, although by this time my baby was already partially on formula.

The birth of my baby was awesome. But healing was very slow. My nipples were not only sore, they were cracked, and now are somewhat deformed. But I persisted on exclusively breastfeeding my baby.

I went through accupuncture for about 4 sessions, but did very little for the GBS at the time, and the trip to the accupuncturist was very exhausting itself, plus we couldn't afford the fees any longer. The medications from the doctors were none, because there weren't any known meds for it except for a "preventative" course of immunoglobulin (ImG) before the GBS went worse (because it could cause death if paralysis goes to lungs). By this time, after all the tests, it looked like the GBS was on the steady and not worsening, so we decided to not take the ImG course (couldn't afford it anyway; insanely expensive). I tried what they called "tantric" massage. I tried homeopathy (worked a little). I tried Craniosacral Theraphy (helped a bit). A bit of everything over the two years, but could not be consistent for several reasons (baby, time, cost).

It is now almost 3 years since the onset of the GBS. I am very thankful that I am still here, had a 2nd baby, breastfeeding well (both), active again. But the left side of my face is recovering very, very slowly. I can probably say that the right side is about 90% healed. I can smile (right half), raise right eyebrow, wiggle right nostril. Left side not so much. It still hurts when I press on my face. When I smile, my forehead crunches, making me look like I'm unsure of or questioning or even mad at something/someone. It is quite funny tho, especially when 2 years ago the whole face was still "frozen", I would be saying something in a happy voice but my face was bland/uninterested/mad, also because my eyes were always on the scary stare mode.

I have always been known to be a "smiley" person. I am more of an easygoing, happy person. I am thankful for a whole lot of things in my life. But I do tend to be an introvert sometimes when it comes to hurtful feelings. This might be one of the mental causes for my condition.

Even though I am about 90% healed on right side, I must admit I am still a bit worried about not being able to recover fully. My biggest concern is that I want my kids to know their mother's smile. And it's not a comfortable condition, because it's like my face is on constant 'pull'. Also, when I sleep, mostly in breastfeeding position, my hands fall asleep, too.

I wonder if there is any definite cure for my condition. I have started ACV 2tsp with BS 1/4tsp, and tall glass of water remedy, initially for food poisoning and flu symptoms. It is my 5th day on, so tomorrow off for 2 days. It definitely helped for the poisoning and flu, plus I do notice my face is clearer and almost glowing again. Because for 2 years my face was sagging for the lack of muscle activity, so skin was also "grey".

But I am so hoping I could smile my old smile again. Please help with any advice :)

Om Shanti,

Bananka"

Also processed foods, fake sugar, wheat, commercial Dairy, etc.... do you eat these? for a good alternative doctor, look for someone who does applied kinesiology and nutrition and wellness. They deal with muscle testing and good eating, vit/min, suppl etc... I've had very good success with that. Also, research, research, research, I go to my consultant (Dr. Type)and turn her on to new therapies to add to when others don't work for some patients. Also the price for this is not so much."
03/09/2012: Bananka from Bali, Indonesia replies: "Thank you Had from White River Jct, Vermont. I have not had the tests, but currently, with more and more research, I am changing my diet for the better. Much much much less sugar intake, almost zero. I eat fruits for breakfast, and a whole lotta veggies for lunch and dinner; aiming for much more than other accompanying foods, like potatoes and rice, etc. Also am basically off milk products.

I do oil pulling sometimes in the morning, and drink warm water with lemon for the liver tonic. So hopefully that will help with the metal toxins, which I'm sure we all have to some extent :)

Overall, I am feeling much better, although physically can only see tiny changes in my smile.

Fingers crossed, I'm going to beat it :D"

03/20/2012: Tea from Keystone Heights, Fl replies: "I too had GBS after giving birth to my second son. It was an immune response due to a bad cold or flu I had in my 6 month. I was giving high doses of steroids and made a slow come back, it took about 2 years before I could run again (it effected my lower extremities hard). Then 20 years later almost to the date I came down with GBS again after the family had a weekend case of stomach flu. This time I took the IVIG and it reversed it immediately. I had nerve test taken and have 60% nerve damage all over my body. I think this might be what is wrong with your face muscles. My Doctor told me the nerve damage is permanent but I have with a whole food plant based diet and vitamins that support the nervous system gotten better but it has taken me 5 years this time to get back to as good as I think it will get."

LDN and Medicinal Mushrooms

07/20/2013: Rsw from Uniontown, Oh: "For those with autoimmune diseases, please look at www.ldninfo.org to see the many illnesses that can be helped by low dose naltrexone. MS progression can be stopped in 89% of MS sufferers, 67% of Crohn's disease can be put in remission, along with UC, backed up by published studies. Lupus, some cancers, and many other autoimmune diseases respond to LDN. Additionally, there is evidence that medicinal mushrooms can be useful in MS, especially the Lion's Mane mushroom, along with Cordyceps and Reishi. I have recently come across two people with MS, one who took Avonex for 13 years and one who had 13 lesions on his brain, and both are now leading normal lives using the mushroom products. One company who has the three mushrooms in a product is M----- Mushroom. I have no financial or other interest in this company. I usually advocate for LDN for MS, but it looks like the mushroom product could be a possibility for those wanting a food product for their healing."

Remedies Needed

09/22/2012: Lori from Ny, Usa: "Dear Ted, My son is a 27 years old and in pain 24/7. I am hoping to get remedies on how to begin to treat these autoimmune diseases. Graves disease started at age 16, thyroid radiated and have been on synthroid. Ankylosing Spondylitis started at age 20, severe pain in lower back and take about 8 advil a day. MS started at age 27, seven months ago, tingling and pins and needles in hands, legs and tops and bottom of feet and started copaxone one month ago.

He is on a starch free diet for about a year which helps with the pain in his lower back.

Are there any protocols for these autoimmune diseases? AS, and MS

Please help. Lori"

09/22/2012: Rsw from Uniontown, Oh replies: "Low dose naltrexone (LDN) will definitely help with the MS and will also probably be helpful for the Graves and AS. www.ldninfo.org and join the Yahoo LDN group to get many (thousands) of success stories of LDN with MS and ask specifically about the other two autoimmune problems. Since he was recently diagnosed with MS, he will have a good chance arresting progression before nerve damage causes permanent damage. Best wishes."

My son takes some of Dr Wahls supplements, but she lists so many.

Thank you so much for responding to my post. It is much appreciated."

12/09/2011: Connie from Slc, Ut: "Hi Lori and Debb ; The suggestions people have made in the Autoimmune Diseases section look excellent.

I'm going to focus on B12 because the symptoms that you are noticing are the most common indicators of B12 deficiency : Numbness, Tingling, Pain, and Burning Pain of the Feet and Hands.

The other challenges of B12 deficiency are; getting a diagnosis, and finding the most effective means of giving it.

Some people with autoimmune conditions, such as MS, appear to have trouble with transport of B12 within their bodies. Some need large amounts of it to flood the tissues in hopes that it reaches the spinal fluid.

Methylcobalamin is considered to be most effective for the nerves. It is an active coenzyme form of B12. Although many people have good results from taking sublingual lozenges of it; other people may respond better with injections, especially when large amounts are needed. ( sometimes 10-50 mgs. daily) With these large amounts, potassium can drop precipitously, so K levels should be monitored closely.

Also, it has been found that caprylic acid, found in coconut oil, butter, etc. Can help with the transport of nutrients across cell membranes. B12 is a chubby molecule ; it needs alot of support.

I am hoping to get remedies on how to begin to treat these autoimmune diseases. Asthma at age 1 year old. Graves disease started at age 16, thyroid radiated and have been on synthroid. Ankylosing Spondylitis started at age 20, severe pain in lower back, takes about 8 advil a day and can't sleep at night because of the pain. MS started at age 27, seven months ago, tingling and pins and needles in legs and tops and bottom of feet and started copaxone one month ago.

Are there any protocols for these autoimmune diseases?

Please help.

The question was placed under autoimmune disease remedy. Scroll down under this question on that page and there you will find the responses. I did get some a few responses that I think are worth considering. I posted the question twice hoping that Ted might answer too.

It sounds like you have similar symptoms of tingling of feet etc.

I hope we will find a remedy that helps!

The website to read about it is www.ldninfo.org. There is a Yahoo LDN group with over 10,000 members, many of whom have MS and other autoimmune diseases. You can join and post your questions. Members are always willing to help out and have years of experience with LDN and about half have MS. Please check these out. It is generally thought that the CRABS drugs, one of which is copaxone, do not work. Good luck. I hope this helps."
12/02/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Gosh for some when it rains it pours. I have Graves disease and I know exactly what a difficult disease it is. I also have more than 20 family members who have been diagnosed with MS. I have researched both diseases alot and with the Graves have been able to treat the issue completely with herbal supplements and diet. Since your son has been treated with radiation for this issue the treatment is different but still possible. Even with low thyroid function or no function his immune system is still on attack mode. That is the root of the problem.

Your son possibly has a food allergy which could be temporary or something he will have to deal with for the rest of his life. When you have a food allergy for instance gluten intolerance. You ingest that food which causes your immune system to send out histamines. Those histamines attack the food that your body is unable to digest causing such reactions as stuffy nose, achy joints, etc... If your son had a normal allergy it could cause anaphylactic shock but with autoimmune diseases the reaction is different. I have done some research on the reasons why so many food allergies are becoming so prevalent in todays day and age. I believe it is curable in most cases. That the root of the problem is actually a disorder called Leaky gut syndrom. Google this problem and see if it is possible that your son might have it. If he has taken alot of anibiotics in his life it is very likely. The antibiotics cause a yeast infestation to start. If it isn't treated then the yeast takes over the intestines. This fungus causes lesions all over the intestines which causes particles of food to leak into the blood. Your immune system attacks the foreign pathogen and you now have a food allergy. Or what your body thinks is a food allergy. Get rid of the yeast and he may be food allergy free again.

Gluten molecules resemble thyroid cells so as you can immagine when you ingest gluten and you are allergic to it then the immune system attacks. Eventually the immune system cannot tell the difference between the thyroid and the gluten cells so the immune system is always on attack mode and the thyroid becomes ill. Either causing Graves disease or Hashimoto's disease. For this kind of disease it is best to avoid the food causing the illness but you can also attempt to calm the immune system down using supplements like Astragulas and Marshmallow root. Another remedy that helps is Ted's alkalizing remedy (lemon 2 tblsp and 1/2 tsp baking soda) 2 to 3 times a day. Make sure he is getting adequite iodine, selenium, magnesium, and Vit C as well.

For the MS the above will help the autoimmune system to calm down and stop attacking nerve cells as well. Another thing that I have found much research on is the possiblity of MS patients also having a copper deficiency. One of the things that copper is know for is to help form what is called the mylin sheaths. These sheaths are like blankets that surround the nerve cells. With MS the sheaths are not always present as they are being distoyed by the immune system. Focus on trying to find supplements that are known to help form the sheaths and possibly repair the damage that has been done. Some that I know of and take myself are Omega 3's (nourishes the fat in the sheath), B vitamins especially B-12(help to form and repair tissues including the myelin sheath), L-Glycine (Helps repair connective tissue including the myelin sheath)

Unfortunately I don't know anything about AS but I would hope that calming the immune system down would also help this. I used to take 8 advil a day and sometimes a few tylenol as well for my migraines and achy joints caused by the Graves. I don't have to take any now that I have gotten control of my immune system. I too had a few different auto immune diseases at the same time and if I stay away from gluten they all stay away. I also take many supplements. I am trying to avoid the MS diagnosis as it is so common in my family. I hope and pray that your son can find relief for all of his diseases. He is too young to have to deal with so much."

Wow, you have given me a wealth of information. I agree about gluten. My son was on a gluten free diet and it was extremely successful in reducing his back pain. He has been off the diet for several months and his pain is right back to where it was. He is working his way back to trying to eat that way, but he finds it challenging and when emotionally depressed. He gets comfort in gluten foods.

We will look into all the rest of your wonderful and thoughtful suggestions.

Thank you very much for your response.

12/05/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Believe me I completely understand how hard it is to stay away from gluten. Sometimes all I can think about is pizza:) I want a slice so bad that everything I eat tastes terrible. It is very hard on the emotions and all I can offer is that eventually he may start to think of those gluten filled foods as evil. I can't say he won't ever want them again but eventually for me when I fall pray to the weakness for just one slice I take a bite and instantly associate the taste with pain. It doesn't mean I don't still eat and chew with supreme joy but in the back of my head I know soon I will regret this delicious mistake. I don't eat it very often but when I do I prepare myself for the inevitable and make sure my schedule is clear for the migraine on the way. I am currently trying to rid myself of the yeast I believe is the culprit to see if this helps. I will let you know if I make any progress."

08/18/2009: Lon from Stanhope, Nj: "I noticed green tea listed in the post about autoimmune diseases. I have an autoimmune disease. Recently, I was investigating fluoride poisoning; a link posted on this site listed green tea, and other teas, as containing fluoride, stating that green tea in particular absorbs fluoride from the soil, and I think from the air too (too busy to check the article now,) like a sponge. It stated that some green tea ads suggest it's use as a cavity preventative because of the high fluoride content generally present in green tea, as well as other teas. The article suggested that fluoride is common in the soil. I've been taking green tea extract, because it's highly recommended for chronic leukemia which I also have. Now I'm utterly confused as to whether it's helping or harming me. Does anyone here have any knowledge about this, or know of any valid studies either supporting or refuting this claim. Do you think it applies to organic tea?"

06/02/2012: Had from White River Jct, Vermont replies: "You may want to buy sodium thiosulfate crystals ( it is usually sold for photographers, it's pretty cheap). When you make a pot of green tea, add 1-2 crystals to the water. Or you can take 1 orally and drink water, it neutralizes the flouride if added to tea/water, if you take it in mouth straight, it detoxes the flouride out of your body. And yes, it is all green tea that has naturally occurring flouride and it has no flavor/taste so easy solution and still get the benefits of green tea."

03/15/2009: D.O. : "HI, I found your site yesterday by accident. ( if you believe there are accidents ) anyway I was disappointed when I didn't find anything on Auto Immune Disease . My 43 year old daughter has it and her blood levels are very high that relate to that problem. Can you please tell me what she can do to get better besides organic food and lots of water. She has had it several years but didn't want to worry me with it especially since she knew I would be out for a cure with natural medicine. She isn't on any medicine
of any kind at this time.

I would appreciate any help you and your readers could give me.

Thanks very much,

D. O."

EC:
We emailed D.O. asking what kind of autoimmune disease her daughter has...

03/15/2009: D. O. replies, "Thanks for answering so quickly. I don't know what kind she has. She has no symptoms that I know of except she has a form of acne on her face and arms that could be caused by the disease. She doesn't discuss it with me very much. The Dr found it on a blood test for her thyroid. Her throid blood values were excellent. It was two other parts of the thyroid test that was very high, one more so than the other."

08/18/2009: Dr Johnathon Nd from Goa, India replies: "There is a lot of info on earthclinic for autoimmune diseases, for a list of diseases that come under this broad heading www.ultimatehealthsolutions.com.au/autoimmune.html. Then look up each ailment and start trying some of the remedies.

A multi approach is required. Eg. Decrease cytokines(acupuncture), heavy metal detox(ETDA,cilantro & oral chelation), omega 3, Alph lipoic acid, Coconut oil, NAC, Vitamin D, Herbs such as ginger, boswellia, shilijit, Green tea etc., yoga/tai chi, meditation and self hypnosis, Eliminate Candida fungus and other lingering infections in the body that attack the immune system. Food allergies must also be looked at! Having a heading "Autoimmune Disease Remedies" is like having a heading "Disease Remedies" its very broad. So the treatment must be also!"

Was presribed Methotrexate, Motrin, predisone, methotrexate hurt worse, had mornings could not get out of bed, stopped that, continued with poredisone and motrin for about 3 years. stopped taking all presription drugs in May of 2007, Sept. of 2007 started taking fishoil pills with O-Mega 3 and 6 (works well for blood levels), felt a difference within a week, (during the worse party of the year for me, reseaerching myself I found cherry extract tablets work for pain and swelling. have been doing this for 3 years now, and feel great to present day, Have not had one morning of stiffness since. I also take turmeric, and Vit.D-3. Green tea also has it's benefits. For at least the past 2 years my blood levels have been where there should be. Unfortunately, I was diag. with lymphoma cancer in 2009, due to lack of info. from DR. I could have nip this in the butt earlier, I have started chemo, feeling good so far I really think what I do for RA is helping me along with the cancer, doing some holistic cures for cancer along with chemo. Take Care."
11/23/2010: Ksuter from Henderson, Nevada replies: "Hi Dorie from Sterling Heights, Michigan
Could you elaborate what natural things you are doing for your chemo and leukemia. My husband is fighting Chronic lymphocytic leukemia now and is going to have chemo in December and we want to reduce the side affects of chemo if possible using natural herbs or natural products and build up his immune system afterwards. He will have Rituxan, Fludara, Cytoxan. We have held off as much as possible but his spleen is so huge now and causing tons of problems and his blood counts have hit all time lows now. It has become active since June.

We follow a very healthy veggie plus protein diet with complex carbs and no sugar or processed anything. We have put chemo off as long as we can hoping that all the healthy changes we made would prolong his stable state. He has been working on his pH and has had it up to 8 now for not quite a week and holding strong. He has had two blood transfusions, and terrible heart palpitations helped by the ACV and baking soda mentioned on this sight. We also use Cell Food to stop the palpitations. His spleen takes all his iron and is also taking his protein. His weight has sunk over the past 3 months. He has no energy of course and had to finally go on disability.

So far in all my searches I have found only two people on the internet that claim to have been cured by alkalizing and changing to a healthy diet, having all fillings and bridges removed and both are now cured. I think both are from Australia. They are my hope that it is possible to cure this dreaded cancer. If anyone has any more info on this it would be helpful."

11/23/2010: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Ksuter, I'm so sorry you are having to deal w/ this. I just thought I'd pass on some important people in this area of healing through diet. They are both world- renowned doctors in this field and both have healing clinics here in the U.S. They are Dr. Brian Clement and Dr. Gabriel Cousens and you can search them on youtube and listen to them speak about their protocols. Dr. Clement offers quite a comprehensive amount of info on youtube and there are whole series of him up there you can watch.

For your info since I see you are in Nevada, Dr. Cousens place is in Arizona. It's called The Tree of Life I believe. You can google that and read about his Rejuvenation Center and the programs he offers. Both doctors have miraculous stories to tell of people being healed of life-threatening diseases. I wish you the best, Lisa"

11/23/2010: Lita209 from Sanford, Fl, Usa replies: "Hello Ksuter. I wish I could be of more help to you. The only thing that comes to mind is the Gerson Therapy. Do research on it. There are documentaries on this doctor and his therapy. Hope everything works out for you and your husband."
11/28/2010: Andrea C from Cardiff, Wales Uk replies: "Hi x I'm so sorry that you and your loved ones are going through this hell. I lost my beloved Mother recently, to this dreadful disease, and also other much loved family to it. They went back to our creator, in a very short time of each other, and I also lost friends to it at the same time. My younger sister, lost her faith in a higher power for quite a while too. She was continuously ringing me up, screaming, "WHAT SORT OF GOD IS THAT? TO TAKE OUR MUM AND DAD, AND THE REST OF OUR FAMILY, AWAY IN SUCH AN AWFUL WAY? But I didn't see it like that. Good or bad things will happen, none of us can say why, but , it's meant to be. Please don't be offended, but life chugs on and yes, there have been many times when I myself wanted to end it all. I actually set off into the woodlands, where I live, to kill myself and to make sure no one would find me, but they did and I ended up in E. R. That was when I had an Epiphany, and woke up to the fact that there were other people hurting inside, and I was still here because our creator had a plan for me. Also my Auntie was sent home when conventional medicine, was no good at all. That was 40 years ago, and she is still with us, Amen!

EARTH CLINIC, is a wonderful website, and everyone on here is like finding family you never knew existed, there is so much love and caring for, not just their own ailments, but every one Else's suffering too. And like others before me, I wish I had found this site before and if I had, then the afore mentioned remedies could have probably saved the people I loved so much. But now I have, there are many other people who need help that I can help using the remedies here on earth clinic. You are never alone on earth clinic, like I said earlier, its like finding a family you never knew you had. I hope and pray that you find the information you need to heal your loved ones here at EARTH CLINIC. MAY THE POSITIVE HEALING THAT FLOWS ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, SMILE KINDLY UP ON YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES AND CHASE YOUR PAIN AWAY. MUCH LOVE TO
YOU ALL X X X"

03/08/2012: Holly from White River Jct, Vermont replies: "If she eats organic, great. If dairy, RAW?? that is great healthwise. Serrapeptase enzyme is amazing for auto-immune, as well as Wheat free, gluten free, a good book, not great but informative is 'wheat belly'. Helps to know what other food triggers can come into play while trying to get off wheat addiction. Also almost every person has metal and other toxins that compromise their health, do some type of chelation(what ever form works for you, we did ______ products (spray under tongue) as we all had no success w/ standard metal detoxing, it would move around but not leave, lymphatic and digestive failures) and see natural med. Dr. Who does applied Kinesiology--then you know how much to take and the right product to take."

I was unable to walk, couldn't open my mouth, and my joints were all locked and contracted. I found Dr. Ted's Borax cure and started that night, using purified water. In two weeks the edema had gone down to where my ankles and knees would flex, and I was so excited! In two and a half months, I was symptom free. I still use ACV and baking soda, use only Borax for washing clothes and house cleaning. If not for Dr. Ted and Borax, I'd be a memory. Thank you so much!
