MULTIPLE REMEDIES TRIED

[NAY] 01/19/2011: Jean from Chicago, Il, Usa writes: "Greetings, first I must say your site is a blessing because I've been able to learn about many alternative healing methods.... However, I have been having problems with breathing normally since September. I have tried coffee enemas, fasted for 16 days, liver detoxed 3 times, tapping, coq10, tea tree/peppermint/eucalypus oils, apple cider vinegar, vitamin c, vitamin d3, super silica, cell salts, wild cherry bark, barley grass, lomatium, colonic, castor oil packs on chests/taking castor oil internally, and various herbal teas. I spent 2 days in the hospital where they loaded me up with predisone, inhalers, etc.. And I really really want to heal myself and not have to take that route. I would appreciate any suggestions your readers, staff and Ted can give me to help with this challenge. Thanks and take care."
Replies01/19/2011: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Jean:It sounds like quite an expensive journey for you these past months, not even counting the bad hospital scare.
I see many things not tried yet in your list of remedies, and 2 of them are both quick to act if they work, and quite cheap:
- One is only $4 or so available in any well-stocked pharmacy or even supermarket. It is the desensitizing toothpaste, under various brands, which contains as the active ingredient potassium nitrate. But, Do NOT use the well-known brand name toothpaste that has strontium as its desensitizing ingredient! There are posts here on it, but no feedback yet from anyone, AND you have to use the Site Seachbox top right of page to find it, using "potassium nitrate" as the search term, because the post is still under "Breathing Cures" here:
www.earthclinic.com/CURES/breathing_cures.html
The toothpaste will, if it works, help right away or over a few days it seems. Of course, for some it may help a little or not at all, but at least it might allow a reduction in the asthma meds, which aren't cheap. Just use any search engine (not this site one) to look for detailed info including some people who claim it works.
- A second remedy to try will cost more, maybe $30-$40, and will take time to get because it's ordered online. It is called "Oralmat" drops and has been out since around 2000. It is not Rx. Again, it will either work, or help, or not work! It is also used for allergy relief, where it rebalances the immune system just as it does for asthma.
A very few posts on it can be found on this site, including one from a woman in Oz who tried it years ago but it did not help her."

NOSE BREATHING

[YEA] 09/29/2007: Victoria Shepard from Santa Barbara, CA writes: "Nose breathing reduced my asthma-like symptoms considerably. About 8 years ago I was diagnosed with allergy related asthma. I ignored the symptoms for about 6 years as they were mild. They worsened, and I had to use an inhaler every day to control the coughing. This year, I noticed that when I laughed, sang, yelled or became stressed, talked too much (I am a teacher), I would cough. I knew my doctor would just give me more asthma drugs, so I began to research alternative treatments on the internet. I came up with the Buyteko program which requires an hour a day of breathing exercises and changing to nose breathing from mouth breathing. As I do not have an hour a day to practice specialized breathing exercises, I utilized what I could: In June of this year (2007), I became a nose breather. It was tricky at first. I had to learn to shorten my sentences and inhale only through my nose. I naturally exhale through my mouth slowly as I speak. This is okay. No deep breathes in or out through the mouth. No deep breathes in through the nose either. To prevent mouth breathing at night, in accordance with the Buyteko program, I tape my mouth with cheap masking tape. It took 3 months, but I have no asthma-like symptoms. I can laugh, shout, get excited or stresed and sing.
It has been over a months since I have used an inhaler. "

OIL PULLING

[YEA] 11/25/2010: Marc from Cranston, Ri writes: "Oil Pulling is helping to cure my asthma. Previous to OP I was unable to run without tight congestion in my chest. The OP in my opinion is curing my asthma and I am now able to run without or very little asthma symptoms. I also noticed healthier gums, and whiter teeth! Thank You!"

[NAY] 05/18/2008: Robert B from Manhattan, New York writes: "Oil Pulling for Asthma.. I have been oil pulling on & off for the past year. I haven't noticed any change in my asthma but have noticed whiter teeth. Has anyone any more info on this Dr. Karach? Does he exist? & why hasn't he responded to this site? Many repeat this one source of text as absolute truth. Not to discredit many of the anecdotal claims here, though I believe some skepticism is actually healthy. One can fill a stadium with nonsense...& vast numbers of people repeating the same untruth won't change it to true."

[YEA] 03/18/2007: Dan from Sacramento, CA writes: "About two weeks ago I was taking my inhaler about twice a day (two puffs total since I don't like using the inhaler in the first place). Then I started Oil-Pulling. You can draw your own conclusions. But all I can say is that the very next day I stopped having to use my inhaler. I didn't experience an immediate throwing-up of mucus. But what I did experience is a gradual coughing-up of mucus all throughout the day. Another thing that I've experienced at least twice is what happens if my chest becomes tight. Usually when my chest tightens it'll stay that way and gradually get worse until I take my inhaler.
What I'm seeing is that when my chest tightens , I'll go through maybe a three hour period where I'll slowly begin to cough-up mucus until my chest is clear again. I have NEVER experienced my chest clearing-up all by itself after it has tightened. I've ALWAYS had to take medicine in order to get relief. During that time, my nose was stuffed a lot of the time. Since I've been OP-ing, it hasn't been. I can only conclude that it must due to the Oil-Pulling."

[YEA] 02/06/2007: Mary from Nevada City, CA writes: "This winter my asthma came back - but not quite as badly as last year. I came back to your site and found oil pulling. What an amazing thig! I was waking up each night needing to cough - but the oil pulling allowed me to cough up mucus in a gentle way - I have been doing the oil for 3-4 weeks and the progress has been steady. Interestingly, I felt the oil pulling clear my sinuses fist - and I didn't think I really had a problem with that. The lungs have been more gradual - but there is definite progress and I don't need the inhaler unless I exercise too hard. The oil pulling was creating such a cleanse in me that in the first week i was feeling very tired and out of sorts. The I decided to do ACV -that was like a miracle - I was no longer tired. My feeling is that the oil pulling pulls toxins out from deeply stored areas of the body - but once the toxins are circulating - the ACV helps to flush them out. The same thing thing happened for my daughter... A side benefit of the ACV is that my blood pressure went down more than 20 points. I do think the ACV is also helpful for the asthma - I also find it very hlpful to take 1 teaspoon of turmeric in a bit of hot water or coffee each morning - with milk and honey to taste - this also helps the asthma very much - and I hope it will help create a longer ter cure."

[YEA] 11/06/2006: Shakti from Chicago, IL writes: "Please post this where asthma sufferers can view it, this is important because I had a hard time finding a cure for asthma on your site but thank God I did. I began a regimen of oil pulling shortly after a lingering cold went to my lungs, I just couldn't get rid of the mucus. I prayed for relief. It got even worse after a chemical pesticide was sprayed in my home for pest control. The next day after the extermination I had the worst attack of my life, I couldn't stand it anymore, so after 10 years of not having to put any poison into my lungs I had to once again use an inhaler to control the attacks. After the second night of waking up feeling side effects of nervousness anxiety and panic I decided enough was enough. I went to the computer in the middle of the night and began hours of research to find a natural cure. That's how I found this miracle of a web site. The next day I went out a purchased some sesame oil and took one table spoon 3x a day at the onset of my asthma attack and Immediately after the very first dose the mucus expelled out of my longs, and within 10 minutes what had plagued me for over 10 years was no more. Since then If I have any tightening in my chest or shortness of breath I IMMEDIATELY do the oil pulling and the problem subsides in 10 minutes or less. ~~~Oh I'd be remiss if I did not mention the side effect, I took oil pulling for Bronchial Asthma but as a result I got a dazzling white smile, sinus relief, not to mention it remarkably helped to subside my symptoms PMS all unexpected but welcomed side effects. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! P.S. thanks my husband thanks you too, lol."

OLD TIMERS' REMEDY

[YEA] 11/11/2007: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "I'll share a little funny about my home remedy collecting. Talking with my uncle one day, when in my teens, and he told me that one of my great aunts used to dry "dog balls" and chew them to relieve her asthma. I was aghast and said: "Uncle Byn", surely you don't mean she killed a poor little dog just to get his testicles for her asthma!" He then tried to delicately explain to me that she followed the dog around on frosty mornings and picked up his "droppings" to dehydrate until she needed them to chew for her asthma. I was still aghast, but relieved that she wasn't killing the poor dogs. This is one remedy I am not likely to try, nor recommend to anyone else. However in reading the history of medicine, I read that they first found the miracle antibiotic (well it was at that time) aureomycin, in the white part of chicken of chicken manure underneath the chicken roost. I then thought of the old folks remedy of standing the child in front of the henhouse door and lettiing the hens fly over their heads for the chickenpox. I seriously doubt that it had any effect other than placebo though."

QUERCETIN

|
[YEA] 01/19/2006: Paul from Morrisville, PA writes: "I have used a quercetin with bromelain supplement to eliminate my daily use of inhalers and singulair in order to breathe. One needs to take very high doses of quercetin when initially weaning themself off the medications (it's almost impossible to take too much quercetin - it's extremely non-toxic and safe). After a few weeks, a lower - and much more affordable - maintenance dose can be taken each day with no side effects or worries. This is not a true cure, but it is one natural way to manage asthma. A good holistic doc may help with finding a cure depending on the particular cause for each individual - whether it be a yeast problem, allergies, adrenal problem, Wilson's syndrome, etc"
EC: Quercetin belongs to a class of water-soluble plant pigments called flavonoids. Quercetin acts as an antihistamine and has anti-inflammatory properties. Quercetin can be found in onions, apples, green tea, and black tea. Smaller amounts are found in leafy green vegetables and beans.

Replies[YEA] 02/02/2009: Mary from Valdosta, Ga replies: "I have been using radish and lemon. I just cut up 4 red ball looking radish and peel one lemon and put them into a blender for a while, at least 6 minutes making sure it is smooth. I then cook it on the low setting. It is wonderful. I still have to take it 3 times a day or so. No coughing, no wheezing, etc. I will try adding honey to it. I keep the mixture in a tupperware container in the refrigerator. I feel good and I am back to drinking good 'ole Southern Sweet tea."

I bought today 3 percent hp and put in nebulizer but did not help- it made me shortness of breath. I now take maxair 3x day and now I need it more every 2-3 hours. Should I continue the hp? Oh I need help- what am I doing wrong? or should I just continue.
I am healthy but need to get over this so called fake asthma which the drug is keeping me. None of my 9 children have asthma nor my dad or mom or sisters or brothers how can I best get rid of this? I eat garlic on and off don't consume oil, take vitamin d, lemon will bring up stuff and will need neb xopnex which will help for 4 hours and after a week will get fever and must quit. The sleep is the main problem when I lay if I sleep on couch three days, asthma is very, very moderate.

It's fake- the med makes you have to be addicted to it help, help!!!!! Thanks

Replies01/09/2012: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Sweetberry I did read somewhere that asthma is caused by a magnesium deficiency and that the inhalers you take for it depletes the body of magnesium... Maybe start some research on that. The best/quickest way to get magnesium into you is transdermally (via skin). Magnesiumforlife. com is a good place for you to start reading."
01/12/2012: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Sweetberry, In addition to the Mg that Debbie suggested have a look at Vit A plus the herbs Japanese Menthol and Tulsi. I used to be on very high doses of asthma meds, 3 different ones. One was so high the prescribing Dr had to first get permission from a Government department! About halfway down the page is what I did and posted on http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/asthma5.htmlPlus have a read of other folk success stories. When you find what works for you please post your results. All the best."

11/17/2011: Jack from Coatesville, Pa, Usa writes: "My wife has severe asthma. Dry hot air at work I don't think helps. When she gets home she is still coughing. I try to keep the house a little cooler for her. If outside air is too cold she gets coughing. I always try to make sure she has a puffer with her at all times. Sometimes she gets coughing till she gets tears in her eyes. When she is at home she is puffing daily. It bothers me when she is in distress that I can't provide relief for her. She ain't big on black coffee but told her it's better than fighting for air. I did read somewhere that vicks vapor rub, INHALED through nostrils may help. DON'T put it in the nose. After much ragging, by me she is going to see a pulmonary specialist. I know when she gets home, she will walk in the door coughing. will try the ACV and post a update in a few days."
Replies11/17/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Magnesium will help your wife as asthma is said to be caused by a magnesium deficiency. The magnesium relaxes the airways so she will breath better. My son used to wheeze all night and sometimes I had to give him ventolin. Since he has had magnesium (in the form of epson salt) in his bath the wheezing has stopped. Also ventolin causes magnesium to be depleted from the body which in turn makes the deficiency worse."

Just read that epsom salts are incredible for Ezcema and on the subject of asthma. I have a lot of info so will give you a quick run down and get hold of me if you need more info. Earth clinic has tons of info and reviews on things too. Now there is a herb called Mullien it works wonders with the lungs , healing after smoking , and may lungs disorders.... So that is something to research. I have done a bit of research myself so let me know if you have trouble finding some. Alos big factor , what is his diet.. Do you know his blood type... I could help you figure out his trigger foods and also they say if you have yeast out of balance that is will affect your bodies in so many ways and asthma is one on them ..."
08/24/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "The best remedy for ezcema I think is sea water. As for asthma. My son was verging on it (and has bad lungs) but since I have been giving him butter and lots of coconut oil (unrefined) it has stopped. Also I now have him on cod liver oil (fermented) and butter oil. The lungs need saturated fats to operate properly. I don't give him any polunsaturated fats.
A good book is "Nourishing Traditions"."
08/26/2011: Jeff from Cebu City, Philippines replies: "Nebulize with FGHP, dilute to about 1%, or add around 3 drops of 35% FGHP to his drinking water. That should help out his asthma. My sister also has asthma, but ever since she started drinking FGHP (every other day) there has been no sign of asthma. Hope it'll work for your son."

If ingested (eaten )it will send a person onto a psychodelic trip that no one should have to bear..... But having said that, if the leaves and seeds are smoked it stops an asthma attack virtually straight away. Many years ago you could buy the leaves and seeds pressed into a cone and this was burnt and inhaled. The plant has been called "thorn apple", and" Jimson weed". Repeat never eat any part of the plant! .. But smoking it is ok, dont overdue it. Just inhale untill the attack has passed. Its best dried."

03/08/2011: Lisa from Waynesboro, Va replies: "It sounds like a diet change is needed, no dairy, sugar, eat veggies and stay away from processed foods, etc. Try to find out what you are allergic to and take care of your infections with hydrogen peroxide therapy and/or colloidal silver. The allergies lower your resistance, then it is a vicious cycle. A good diet gives your body a rest so you can deal with the other issues. I have asthma, allergy and candida problems with constant infections. the diet is the main thing."

12/31/2010: Taaz from Manchester, United Kingdom writes: "HI T
I am really hoping that you will respond to my queries. I have a 21 year old son who has been asthmatic since childhood. Currently he has been prescribed 2 inhalers, Ventoline and Symbicort. I am really concerned because he complains of chest aches every morning especially when it gets bitterly cold. He has been tested recently for peak performance for his lungs, which was 65 percent. I do realize that steroids are not a long term solution and that is the reason why I am hoping that somebody responds to my email. I have been researching asthma cures and managed to find out that asthma can be caused by a fungus growth in the lungs. This particular doctor has claimed to cure asthma by prescribing zithromax antibiotics which is taken if blood tests like chlamydia and mycolplasma pneumonia are positive. However I have not found any doctor who carries out this treatment in the Uk.
Please can you recommend any regime that can be followed up by my son? Will oil-pulling or cider vinegar mixed with soda bi-carb help? If so what should the dosage be like? Would supplements help in any way and which ones? Please help! "

I assume you're trying to get T= Ted?
Unfortunately, your request could go off the page since the site is set up more as a "self serve" first, with specific people responding only if they're around donating their time! Try something that will be cheap first, and this one is also very fast to work, too, when it does:
It's been put under " Breathing Cures", for whatever reason. When you get to the page at the URL, just look for it since it's on a short page, or just use the Search Box at top right of the page and enter 'potassium nitrate'. It will go to the post on desensitizing toothpaste. Just heed that Sensodyne is NOT to be used for this, since it uses a different molecule as the active ingredient.

01/05/2011: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Taaz, About 15 years ago my asthma got so bad that it took 1/2 hour to get out of bed. Ventolin then 5min gap then Becloforte then 15min gap and ventolin again then 5min gap then another preventative, also did this another 3 times a day. Also ended up with emergency treatment about 4-5 times in 12 months and then taking cortizone tablets.Started taking cod liver oil capsules which gave me daily 12,000iu Vit A per day. Also discovered the plant Japanese Menthol, which eating a leaf or two would make breathing easier. As I was getting side effects from the meds and I was doing much better I weaned myself off the meds, but always kept ventolin on hand for an emergency. In a period of 18 months only went to emergency once.
Then I discovered a great book called 'Give Asthma The Big A' It is all about Vit A for Asthma written by a lady from Brisbane (I think). I now take a herb called Tulsi, either by capsule or tea, when my lungs are not well and on rare occasions cod liver oil. The herb tulsi (tulasi or holy basil) is now always in our home either in the form of tea or capsules. All the best in finding an answer for your son."
01/05/2011: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Maria:
This is interesting new news on asthma that made all the papers I see in October 2010.
Lungs have taste bud cells! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8084010/Lungs-have-taste-buds-scientists-find.html
Human lungs can detect bitter tastes in the same way as the tongue can and respond to the sensation in a particular way. The team from University of Maryland School of Medicine found that contrary to what they thought would happen, the airways in the lungs opened in response to a bitter taste. Senior author Dr Stephen Liggett said: "I initially thoguht the bitter-taste receptors in the lungs would prompt a 'fight or flight' response to a noxious inhaleant causing chest tightness and coughing so you would leave the toxic environment but that's not what we found. So, possibly in a real emergency, like caught with no medication or just out, maybe something like unsweetened baker's chocolate or anything else bitter could be tried?
But it would be necessary to know beforehand if one has an allergy or reaction to it under normal circumstances. There should be a feeling of the airways opening and easier breathing if this is found to work."
01/05/2011: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Maria:
FINALLY, someone from OZ! I was wondering why there's no information here on a homegrown product that's been out since the late 90's for asthma and allergies (they also make a skin cream that' supposedly excellent). It's a phytochemical mix extracted from ryegrass and commercialized, but not Rx, named ORALMAT. It is now sold all over the world, on internet online etc. , and the cost of trying to see if it works is less than one Rx for a puffer.
I put up a post last year about it, but I see it ended up under GSE! http://www.earthclinic.com/Supplements/grapefruit_seed_extract.html
Look for the date 08/28/2010, or just use your browser word search feature once at that page to find Oralmat. Have you tried it, or heard of it?"
[YEA] 01/05/2011: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Just a quick addition. When I start to have breathing distress I immediately have a strong coffee. NEVER instant coffee. If there is a known allergen around we make up some coffee in a thermos to be ready. My husband has even made coffee for me in the middle of the night to get my breathing normal again. I have been using coffee for about four years now. I do not need it very often but when I do it works for me. I have not needed the ventolin since using coffee. Tried strong tea but this did not work for me. Also I have never been back to emergency nor have I seen another Dr regarding asthma."
01/06/2011: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Tom, Yes I know the drops you are talking about, but have never seen the cream. I tried the drops way back when they first came out before I found what worked for me. At the time they were expensive, about $19 per tiny bottle (10mls) whereas ventolin was just under $6 per puffer. Unfortunately they did nothing for me. At the time I followed the instructions and finished the whole bottle. Maybe there are some EC members from OZ or elsewhere who have used them or know of someone who has and hopefully they will let you know of their experience."

I work in an office and I was exposed to masonry brick grinding dust at work- the dust and debris came into my office and I breathed it in due to failure in protecting the ducts in the building. I felt immediately a burning sensation in my lungs, had no mucous, no tears for about a week. I had an awful taste in my mouth. After the exposures, I am not able to be around any chemical or fragrance. When I would walk into the office I would get a numb tongue and can taste the dust. I also get this taste if I am around a cleaning chemical or a perfume and never had these problems before. I will start to cough violently and immediately in reaction to anything that is related to this dust or any chemicals.
I now have asthma and lots of bouts with chronic bronchitis. I have a lot of mucous and a lot of coughing. I am on advair after being on asmanex and I am not getting any better. I do not have any problems with exercise and feel better after doing cardio daily. Is there something I can do to help myself heal? I am not near the dust and debris any longer and my work is cleaning up the environment but I need to help myself heal as I do not like taking perscription inhalers and albuterol daily. The coughing episodes are bad and I feel that they are getting more frequent. I cannot tolerate any fragrance, not even hand soap. Any advice would be highly appreciated."
08/24/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Natalie:
I realize this is many months after your request, and I still don't see this in the list of Asthma remedies even though it's been out for at least 5 years, so perhaps you could try to find this product:
Ryegrass extract, brand name ORALMAT. Developed in Australia 1990's?

At the link, it'll tell you which large chain name store has it. Also available at their online website. Price was not mentioned. It's herbal, so it's not a prescription, and claims say it greatly reduces need for medication or eliminates the asthma altogether. Sounds in that respect a little like yamoa powder."

05/23/2009: Greenbeanz39 from Clarkston, Washington writes: "I have a 7 year old neighbor with asthma. She has been really ill for the last week staying up at night with a persistent unproductive cough. She coughs to the point of vomiting. Her parents have her on Claritin and give her breathing treatments during the day and at night. I would like to send them home with my vaporizer, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, rosemary oil that I add to coconut oil that they can rub on her chest and feet and in the vaporizer as well. Maybe some herbal tea with honey, probably can't sneak any ACV into it though as she is very picky. Does anyone have any more ideas? I have had the dry cough too for a week and take ACV with water everyday and honey when I have a cough attack, but this only works temporarily. Any advice would be so welcome, I can only imagine that this kid is so miserable. I need some help before her parents put her on steroids!"

SALT PIPE INHALER

[WARNING!] 03/17/2009: Clarice from Boston, MA, USA writes: "This is not just a Big Fat Nay for salt pipe inhalation therapy for asthma, but a complaint about the poster who is pumping their "Salt Rocks" site under the very very thin guise of "offering extensive compiled information" (which is no different than any other site selling salt rock pipes).
I actually went to the Salt Rocks site that the poster put in their post and bought two salt pipes for two asthmatics in the family. The people involved are both non-smoking males, one 43 years and the other 58 years, both have low-sodium diets that generally exclude asthma-trigger allergens; the younger is a vegetarian, the elder is not. I got the pipes at Christmas time, and three months later, no improvement or help whatsoever in either person, and in fact, the elder person is worse, now having to have a heftier dose of Advair. And, while all the "information" promises no increase in blood pressure, blood pressure was elevated in the elder, and in the younger blood pressure went through the roof after starting salt inhalation; both cases higher than when taking the Advair (which is known to elevate blood pressure).
So, consider this a double nay for salt pipes, both of which have been relegated to the trash bin.
If it sounds too good to be true, guess what children, it is...except for the person selling it, of course."

[YEA] 02/28/2009: Amy from Las Vegas, Nevada writes: "My son has had breathing difficulties for 5 of his 7 years. He has tried many remedies but has found the most relief from the Himalayan Salt Inhaler. He knows when he starts to feel breathing difficulties starting, grabs his "pipe" and cures himself. It is absolutely amazing! He has never had conventional meds but we were close to getting him a medical inhaler because he suffered so badly. Not any more!!"

[YEA] 11/13/2008: Fluffy from Warwick, RI writes: "First of all, thank you Earth Clinic. It was through here I first saw a reference to salt inhalation as a remedy/relief from Asthma.
It was from KR's post that I started researching salt pipes and salt inhalation. Sounded interesting, so I made one (how to make your own below.)
My brother started suffering from Asthma about ten years ago, and started with serious prescription meds about six years ago -- and he doesn't like the side effects (or the idea of inhaling steroids twice daily) at all. To make things worse, he was wounded in Vietnam, and as a result of surgery to remove the shrapnel, he is missing part of a lung, and his diaphragm doesn't function well, ergo, bad breathing to begin with. While retraining himself to breathe correctly has had minimal success, breathing with the diaphragm is exceptionally difficult and painful for him. We have handled as best we can the environmental issues (taking up carpeting, not using the wood stove, installing air cleaner, shaving the cats...)but that has only helped minimally. So, we started searching for INEXPENSIVE alternative and natural treatments (that for the most part can be paid for by food stamps).
After looking at a plethora of salt pipe websites, I thought it would be easy enough to make, and it is. I have a large mini-teapot collection, and chose a nicely shaped porcelain pot (size would be 1-cup, or it would be considered a child's or doll's teapot)where the spout curves a little and sits low on the pot. Strainer holes are preferable, but can be worked around by stuffing a little sterile gauze in the bottom of the spout. I then went to my cupboard, and sure enough, there in the back was a box of Morton's rock salt which I use in the ice cream maker. Dump salt into pot, and bingo, a salt pipe. If the steam hole in the lid doesn't allow enough air, manipulate the lid a little with your hand/fingers. Use the spout as your mouth inhaler. It takes a little practice to consistently breathe in thru mouth, out thru nose, as there is no valve to prevent contaminated air going back into the pot/pipe. But, just starting with a little salt, if it becomes contaminated, just dump it out. Now, I mention Morton's specifically, because I tested it. One of the inhaler sites stated that THEIR salts were the best because everybody else's had fluoride or chlorine or other nasty stuff in it. I dissolved some salt in distilled water and tested it with a water test kit I got from my garden center. The ppm levels of "stuff" were somewhat-to-significantly lower than are naturally found in my municipal drinking water, so I don't see any big problem. Just a word of caution about mini-tea pots...porcelain and china are no-brainers; ceramic, stoneware, or other pottery may not have suitable glazes, or glazes that may react with the salt so dissolve 2 tbsp of salt with 6 ounces hot-to-boiling water and see if there is any discoloration after 2-3 hours; and, of course, NEVER use a metal pot, even if it has a porcelain finish. A little teapot that may be labeled "not suitable for use" more than likely means the glazing is not suitable for food-stuffs or tea tannins (which can leach out contaminants), however, it simply may mean the pot is not be able to stand up to heat, so do a test first, and if there are any problems, don't use it.
In any event, it has been 3 weeks now at generally two 15-minute sessions daily and a few minutes when he feels like an attack might be coming on. He began to feel better after a couple of days, with steady improvement. My bro has used his Advair only five times (instead of twice daily), and his inhaler only a few times. Overall, he feels an improvement in his breathing, and if nothing else, he is able to sleep more soundly at night. I am convinced that were he able to do breathing exercises properly that would even help more, but that's going to take time.
Based on results thus far (with zero side effects other than an occasional salty taste in the mouth), we certainly would recommend trying it.
BTW....just kidding about shaving the cats."
11/14/2008: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "It would be worth your while to look up www.watercure.com. Water and salt are the treatment for asthma as well as most diseases with this therapy."
