QUESTION

12/04/2011: Zander from Cincinnatti, Oh: "We had a bed bug infestation from a guitar case which we had loaned out and retrieved.

We self treated with DE [you have to be VERY careful with this, protect your respiratory system with a respirator, not a paint mask and it must be food grade, not swimming pool filter type] and, at a separate time, yes kerosene. We have an all wood ceiling and floors. We used a nasty, non-natural insecticide in the kerosene and mopped the floors and ceiling with the mixture. Obviously, one must exercise common sense caution with the use of kerosene [as with any flammable liquid], which is the centuries old treatment for bed bug destruction and repulsion [old timers would place their bed posts in cans of kerosene to prevent them from scaling the posts].

A thorough examination of the bed frame and bedding--under mattresses particularly, must be done as well as under lamps, particularly floor lamps, furnishings, book cases, behind switch plates and outlet covers. Remove such covers and paint the backs of each with DE bound in a bit of soapy water. Allow to dry completely before replacing.

We made the fatal error of using bug "bombs" at our first discovery of these creatures which spread them and caused us to have to battle them for months, rather than the day or so it might have taken to eradicate them. The bug bombs spread them. They are much easier to find and eliminate if they are not spread.

The last bed bug we saw was 3 months after the search and destroy measures faithfully followed as described above; however, I experienced what I believed were bite marks for ..... two years afterwards.

I went to extreme measures and actually slept in a diving suit! When "bite" marks appeared inside the covered areas I tried to determine if these were delayed skin reactions to previous bites that had perhaps occurred elsewhere in the home. That was so much fun to wonder about.

After leaving my home for three months, I came to suspect MRSA as the source of the "bite" marks. The marks were typically MRSA like "spider bite" in appearance.

I began a natural protocol for MRSA which included zinc, turmeric and coconut oil. The "bites" then disappeared.

I believe that what I had was MRSA carried by the bed bugs. I would like to confirm with a home test kit, if possible. If anyone has information about where such can be ordered online, I would be truly grateful."

07/18/2011: Jacli2001 from Philadelphia, Pa: "Hi Ted,

I am hoping you can please help. I gave birth to twins April 27th, 2011 and ended up with masititus immediately following. I am so blessed the twins have not been affected thus far. June 1st, 2011 I had an IND done on the inside of my left breast and was informed that I was heavily infected with MRSA. I was put on all the latest and greates antibiotics. I had reactions to most of them and was sent home on June 10th with clyndamyocin for 15 days. Meanwhile some of my lymphs nodes well swelling while I was on the antibiotics and a continual hard mass remained somewhat nest to the incision. Once the incision closed over I started putting honey on my breast to keep away the MRSA and help with scarring.

On July 15th I started to have a rash outbreak on the outside of my left breast. It was blistery So everywhere I was applying the honey (manuka honey) there was no sign of infection. So if you can picture a square-like area on breast was free and clear of the infection. This gave me faith that the honey was working. So I appliead Honey all over the affected area and the scarred area.

On Jul 16th I went and bought a large quantity of turmeric, coconut oil, epsom salt, organic acai berry juice, tea tree oil. This morning I had noticed redness and cellulitus on the inside of my left breast, where the mass is. I immediately started taking the turneric and applying the tea tree oil and drinking the acai juice. I later washed with the epsom salt and applied coconut oil to my legs. I have also had a continual bad case of folliculitus on my legs ever since I contracted the mrsa.

On July 17th the area on the inside of my breast is gone and the outside are looks all scabbed over like scrath. It looks as if nothing more is there. I am still applying tea tree oil and then honey all over my breast, as well as taking the turmeric (3 teaspoons a day) I also drank a glass of acai berry too. Things appear better on the outside. However, my breast is swollen and once this started I had aching in my breast that extends into my back and left arm. If I wear anything other than a sports bra aching will extend into my left leg. This aching is still there and the swellingis also there though the outside appears healed.

My theory is the mass is old milk colonized or infected with mrsa that didn't surface with the majority of everything else. I am fearful I am going to have another surgery. I do not want to take antibiotics because of the affects. I just order some colloidal silver tincture and soap. I rarely drink soda and I eat gluten free.

I am also being seen by a surgeon who wanted me to take antibitotics and agreed if I didn't have a fever that I don't need them.

What would you recommend? Also my multivitamin has B-6 in it. Were explaing that B-6 should be avoided? I was unclear in your explanation.

Thanks you."

[YEA]  06/22/2011: Nikki from San Diego, Ca replies: "My son has had 2 staph infections, he would get these clusters of bumps that start out like pimples and then turn into an infection. He recently had another outbreak on his leg, 3 bumps, I immediately rubbed garlic on it and it disappeared the next day. A few days later it came back in another spot, after almost 2 weeks of trying to get rid of it, I found this product called PHenomenal. After 2 days of using this water/gel it was gone like magic. I even tried a little on my face for acne and it cleared me up. I highly recommend it, it worked great for my son!"

09/17/2010: Debi from Henderson, Colorado - United States: "I need your help. My son is three years old and we have been battling boils since he was 3 months old. My son will usually get a boil or two on his bottom. Once the boils have come to a head I take him into the doctor and they pop/lance the boil and push the pus out. They culture the pus and it always comes back MRSA. They always give him Bactrim to clear up the infection. But, the boils always come back, and not in the same locations. He seems to get them on his bottom a lot, twice on his stomach. This last instance he got a cluster of them on the inside of his thighs. He has never clustered like this before. He had 4 on the inside of his right thigh and 6 on the inside of his left thigh. The doctors have told me that my son colonizes MRSA. They told me there is no way to kill the colonization and he will deal with this his whole life. He has had over 14 different bouts with these boils and he is only three. The latest doctor we saw advised me to give him two bleach baths a week for 6 months and that it would kill the colonization. I just started doing the bleach baths this week (1 tsp for every gallon of water). Another doctor called me and said the bleach baths are not guaranteed to kill it. I am still going to try because I do not know what else to do. His hygiene is not in question. He washes his hands and takes baths or showers every other day.

His older sister (7 yrs), and myself and his father do not have issues with MRSA. No one on either side of our family has any problems like this, just my son. I have popped the boils, I have touched the boils, etc. , and I never get them. No one else ever gets them. Can I kill his MRSA so he stops getting these boils? These boils are so painful for him and I hate seeing him go through this. There has to be some way to kill it. MRSA has been around for a long time. How were people killing it before all the pharmaceutical companies came around? I just need to kill it. Is there a way?"

09/18/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Debi: Have you tried any of the many remedies on the MRSA page here?

The most popular, and it turns out the cheapest, is turmeric (has the specific active polyphenol curcumin). If you look under "Iodine" remedy on that MRSA page, you'll see a reference to Ted's Paste, a mix of common items:
I used an EC remedy of turmeric, tea tree oil, VCO virgin coconut oil, aluminum-free baking soda, and the contents of a vitamin E capsule. I put the paste on a cotton round and changed it frequently. It drew out the pus from the boil and I am fine.

http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/MRSA.html

Here's a turmeric paste you can make, from another post:
1 tsp turmeric mixed with 1 tsp coconut oil in hot water twice. I also put a bandage on with turmeric, coconut oil, and raw honey mixed into a paste. Leave bandage on, including especially overnight. Remember that turmeric can also be taken orally, and is very cheap! It is a proven anti-inflammatory, antiviral and bactericidal (antibiotic) (MRSA is a bacterium. )

Some of the other remedies under MRSA are also very cheap, like garlic, colloidal silver (especially if you make it yourself), and Iodine. All those were used successfully before antibiotics!"

[YEA]  05/15/2011: Donald from Seattle, Wa replies: "My heart goes out to you and your son. I had been on Bactrim on-and-off for over a year. MRSA always reinfected through a fungal foot infection, well that isn't important. What is important is that I finally figured out that Bactrim was so damaging to my Immune System that I quickly became (re)infected by every nearby bacterium (including Staph/MRSA) whenever I stopped the Bactrim. And Bactrim doesn't protect against fungal infections anyway, so *that* always provided an instant portal for bacterial reinfection.

I'm presently trying topical urine therapy for the fungus, and now my immune system ( many of the OTC/Spices already mentioned here) - *seem* to be clobbering the MRSA faster than Bactrim ( the same OTC's) ever did ... but everyone's immune system is different."

11/04/2011: Anita from Theodore, Al, Usa: "I LOVE this site!

I would like to say that I just discovered that if there are infected hair follicles (or boils, etc. ) that this could be caused by colonized staph. I have suffered from this on my scalp for almost 7 years. (I've seen internists, dermatologists, infectious disease doctors... None have been able to diagnose or even offer a satisfactory treatment... I even had a biopsy which showed nothing! ~ useless ointments, dandruff & medicated shampoos, tar treatments, etc, only left my hair broken and damaged ~ NO relief from the painful knots & sores on my head.)

Last year, after a dental oncologist suggested that I may have colonized staph from being in the hospital so long, I began researching that. I discovered from more than one source, that if Folliculitis continues, the Dr. might want to do a nasal culture for staph."

WHY hadn't any Doctor suggested this to me?

(I should also add that I had recurring Cellulitis for over 4 years, also caused by staph. ) Well I went to my EENT, on my own, and had the nasal culture done. When the results were back, I was kind of expecting him to say it was staph... but what he said floored me! It was Staph_MRSA!

He is treating me with at least 20 days of Doxycycline, at which time he will do another nasal culture.

I am also going to get Turmeric (organic) capsules to take, but must be careful because I am diabetic. 'Also found it can interact with some acid reflux medicines such as Nexium. But I am determined to use it!

Please also see my post on Comfrey, "The Miracle Herb", I am using that, as well, on my scalp."

11/05/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Iodine will kill MRSA. If you dilute it in water you could massage it into your scalp.

If you are taking an antibiotic remember to take a good probiotic at the same time or you will end up with Candida down the track."

Grape Seed Extract

02/05/2011: Jim from Gary, Indiana Usa: "I recently saw a report about trials conducted on grapeseed extract and mrsa the trials were done in kuwait and it said that 43 strains of mrsa were killed by grapeseed extract. I do not know how many strains there are, but it seems like an easy enough test. If I had mrsa I would be taking grapeseed extract not to be confused with grapefruit seed extract. Also Jesus is the ultimate healer so pray when taking it. I would and do. Jim"

WARNING!

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  06/16/2013: Lila from Jacksonville, Fl: "MRSA: I used grapefruit seed extract (gse) topically mixed into french green clay (like a poultice, buy at health food store) to draw out the infection instead of having to have it cut out. Far more effective than anything the doctors had to offer. I was on Septra antibiotic for 10 days as well. Before the doctor cuts you open, it may be wise to consider using the green clay with distilled water and between 10-20 drops of ges. You can google for proper recipe.

Two months later I have a boil in a second spot and I am treating it with clay topically and taking the 125 gse capsules orally as well. Hoping and expecting I will not need antibiotics after vigilantly applying gse."

I had MRSA on my face, my face was swollen from my eye to my neck with the thick green pus coming from a small sore on my upper lip. It was so bad that the doctor tried lanceing to get some of the pus out. The doctor didn't think it was MRSA, but I made her do a culture and it came back positive for MRSA. I had been to the doctors 5 times in 3 days and I was fed up with the back and forth and no results, so my mother in law told me about the grapefruit seed extract. I put 4 to 5 drops of the grapefruit seed extract topically on the MRSA sore and rubed it in 4 to 5 times a day. Within a few days the swelling had gone down and it was gone by day 10. About 2 to 3 weeks later I had an apportment with Infectious Disease and the doctor did a culture of my nose to see if I still had MRSA and "it was gone". I told her that I had used the grapefruit seed extract, she told that tea tree oil also works."

[YEA]  08/11/2007: Christine Greehy from Melbourne, Florida: "My son experienced MRSA and I successfully used Earthclinic's recommendation for Tumeric, baking soda, and sea salt. However, though his wound was getting much better, we still had to drain the puss from the wound 2x a day which was very painful for him and opened his wound even more.

A friend told me to put grated raw potato on the open wound and let it sit until the gratings turned black. We did one application and never was able to get out any puss after that! It sped the healing of MRSA used in conjunction with the tumeric, baking soda, sea salt paste. I was told to apply it to any infection as drawling salve. Amazing!!!"

Herbs

01/11/2011: Shiloh from Escondido, California: "HI, Everyone at Earth Clinic, here are some good remedys for boils.

Herbs: Burdock root, goldenseal, olive oil extract, pau d'arco, are all natural antibiotics that help rid the body of toxins.

Dandilion, burdock root , and milk thistle cleanse the bloodstream.

Flaxseed and fenugreek, simmered together and mashed into a pulp, can be used as a compress.

Oatstraw taken in tea form, supplies silica, which has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Use an onion poultice, wrapped in cloth. Also can use 9-10 drops of tea tree oil to 1qt warm water, soak a clean cloth then apply to boil. Charcoal capsules made into a paste will draw boil to a head. All of this information comes from a book on nutritional healing."

[YEA]  06/05/2008: Phylene Gaffney from Barrow, Alaska: "Staph Remedies: Living in the Northern most region has caused my body to go through various changes. I have found the lack of sunlight, long dark cold winters and heavy polluted winds over the ocean from China are definitely part of the problem. Originally I only had a small bump on the side of my nose. Other problems, such as blood pressure increase caused my to go to the hospital and get checked. Unfortunately, doctors here are not familiar with many strains of staph and did not get a diagnosis, but wanted me on blood pressure pills. This went on until I finally went to Colorado and saw a Chinese Herbalist who tested me and found the staph. Since that time I have had herbal tonic, clean diet, vinegar/baking soda/honey and water mix and LIMU cleanse. Natural cures seem to take along time but it is slowly healing. It is been about a year. I believe if I was in a different area with green plants and sunshine it would probably heal faster."

Holy Grail for Boil Care

YEA

[YEA]  08/05/2006: Sean from Milwaukee, WI: "I am going to try to give a good synopsis of what I have learned from infectious disease doctors (several), and many naturalists. At the FIRST sign of a boil (yes even a painful pimple), I would start with the following:

Wash thoroughly twice a day for at least 10 days (or longer if you still have the boil) with either:

a) enough good quality(dr bronners baby unscented is great) liquid soap to wash you entire body to which you add approx 5 drops of good quality 100% pure Tea Tree Oil, for each washing. or

b) A chlorhexidine solution available over the counter under the brand name Hibiclens (this is the western medicine option)

Ok, this is the most important step! Don't skip it, you will regret it when you have a relapse.

Take a small clean glass jar and mix about 2-3ml (think thimble full or less) of KY jelly or equivalent with 1-2 drops of 100% pure Tea tree oil. Cap jar and shake to mix completely. Take a cotton swab (q-tip) and dip it in the solution and apply it to the inside of your nostrils, one clean swab full per nostril (it will sting a bit at first but you'll get used to it fast). Once you have it in both nostrils pinch your nose closed and squish your nose around to spread it out inside your nose. Do this twice a day religiously until 10 days after you are boil free. Then do it 2-3 times per week for a month. This step is super important because MRSA will usually hang on in your nose even after all infection appears gone just to rear its ugly head again when conditions are right. (an antibiotic like mupriocin would be used by a western doctor worth his salt)

Supplements:
Zinc 50mg-90mg daily (never more than 100mg)
Vitamin A (one softgel) daily,
Turmeric 1tsp (or two 00 caps) 3 times daily (thanks Earth Clinic!),
Neem (1 capsule) twice daily.

I currently consider this the holy grail of knowledge on natural MRSA treatment. I hope to post an update with more details soon. Good Luck!"

8/5/2006: Shawn adds more to his earlier post: "Apply 1 drop of 100% pure Tea Tree oil directly to the boil and cover with Band-Aid (or a telfa (nonstick) pad with tape for large boils) 2-3 times daily.

Avoid using plain gauze, it tends to make the boil dry out or scab over. You want to keep it moist.

I suggest using a moist compress as hot as you can stand it (i use a tea kettle), apply tea tree and/ lavender oil to maximize effect. Do this several times per day (inconvenient, but so are boils!)

And, of course, NEVER SQUEEZE A BOIL! it can spread the infection very quickly to the surrounding tissue.

If you see red spider web like lines around the boil, see a doctor immediately. This can be a sign of the infection spreading to the blood, which is very dangerous.

Once a boil has a white tip or has opened, it should be kept covered and treated liberally with tea tree directly into the wound if possible.

Notes on Tea Tree Oil : Has been shown very effective against MRSA, nearly as effective as the best antibiotics.

To test for sensitivity to tea tree oil: apply a drop on inner arm and cover with a Band-Aid. Wait 1-2hrs and remove Band-Aid if redness or swelling occurs you should not use tea tree."
