Natural Approaches for Scabies: Exploring Effective Remedies

Scabies Treatment and Seizure: I came back from Thailand with scabies. My doctor prescribed Permethrin Cream which I used for 3 weeks in a row. Then my husband showed the signs of scabies so 10 days later we both used the Permethrin. In the 10 days I tried Tea Tree Oil as a natural substitute. After using the Permethrin for the 4th time (I informed my doctor that I had used it 3 times before). I had a seizure for the first in my life at 45. I went to ER told the doc that i had probably overdosed on Permethrin. He claimed it is a topical and disregarded that. I was sent to a neurologist who did an eeg and mri on me and both were normal. Meanwhile my armpits burn and itch and I just developed a rash and bumps on my abdomen. I called the neurologist almost in tears and he wanted to prescribe another cream Croatin or something. I declined!!!! They don't get it. I don't want to die to get rid of them. Is there an expert in this area? I looked up tea tree oil and the active ingredient is a similar makeup to turpentine and has caused seizures and death in cats. The scabies has cost me 5,000 from my insurance deductible. these medicines are dangerous and nobody cares. The neurologist thought permethrin could cause a seizure if ingested orally! Doesn't it go into our bloodstream through the skin and effect our nervous system? I am not a doctor, but it seems obvious. I don't know where to turn.

My findings I found is that short term use (exceeding one or more week) lead to a neurological damage in dogs as permethrin was found in the dogs blood that lead to sudden loss of appetite, vomiting and mild epileptic seizures. The most serious I found was weight loss and loss of appetite, along with general weakness. As to the tea tree oil, unfortunately I wasn't able to find any problems with its use.

The permethrin is currently assumed NOT to go through the skin, unfortunately they do go to the skin quite readily if the the carrier base are oil based or cream based and goes through the skin, as I understood, in a matter of hours. Most oil based chemicals, even including tea tree, but more so with permethrin since they damage the neurological process directly that leads to a sudden case of vomiting and then followed by a mild seizures for only permethrin, but not tea tree oil in normal usage amount. Even the person who applied it, namely me, I also got nauseated from using permethrin based dog shampoo and realized early on I had to stop use if the requirement involved the use of longer then 5 days otherwise the body can't detoxify.

In any event, there IS a way around it, since no one really is going to do anything about this issue, which I am afraid I was a bit late to know about that to save one of the dogs dying from permethrin poisoning. The dog died of a seizure a couple of years back while visiting one of my neighbors. The remedy is hydrogen peroxide 20 drops per 1 liter of water, 3% food grade. The other, that can help (within reason!) is the use of vinegar, which somehow induced vomiting (in dogs) and caused a return to normal appetite.

Unfortunately long term exposure involving heavy neurological damage has limited ability to reverse this condition, but a mild exposure can be reduced by destroying permethrin through either breathing in ozone, and/or the use of hydrogen peroxide drinks, very 2-3 hours for about a day. In the event hydrogen peroxde and/or ozone isn't available, which happens very often in third world countries, then I would settle for vinegar and baking soda remedy. Which is 2 tablespoon of vinegar plus 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (the baking soda is a bit higher here by the usual 1/4), in 1/2 glass of water taken 3 times a day. A vitamin B complex is also helpful. Granulated lecithin 1 tablespoon was also protective, as is some magnesium also.

Few people know permethrin can be absorbed by the skin and checked for its presence within an hour or so after the application. It's also true that any oil based aromatherapy has the same effect transdermally. It is one reason how bisphenol A found in cosmetic products and canned food products get into our system also. In a laboratory findings of a rat where it's stomach were shaved, and lavender oil was applied, then it was sacrificed, the scientists found the presence of lavender in their kidneys. The same is also true for the use of garlic. A fresh clove of garlic, chopped, is placed on the foot of a person. Within 30 minutes to an hour, its possible to detect the presence of garlic in a person's breath even though a person have NOT consumed the garlic. It's this reason why ADHD condition are made much worse after the use of any commercial toiletry products, especially those that contain aldehydes and ketones.

Though information is lacking, its possible to prove that through blood tests for their presence. The same is true in proving aspartame poisoning in detection of methanol content over time increases after their consumption, and given a longer period, the presence of formadehyde from their breakdown in the body system. The secret is in the blood in proving things, not expensive rat studies to prove tumor, these research can be altered, but not a blood test.

In any event, I believe hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and vitamin B complex will be most helpful. If none of those are available, permethrin are also destroyed by both UV and ozone exposure too. But their damages to neurological system maybe damaging, even in low concentration even for humans.

Orange essential oil will get rid of scabies. you can put several (10-12) drops in your bath water and also make a spray of orange oil and water in a sprayer bottle - put enough so that you can smell the orange oil. i have also used it topically by mixing it with a carrier oil (olive or coconut). it won't hurt you however to use it straight - but be careful because it can cause sun-sensitivity. also orange juice or lemon or lime juice should also work.

when my best friend had scabies and couldn't use the prescription cream and treatment from the doctor this is what she used and had immediate relief. also i was helping her apply the orange oil and i had first put some on myself (the spray) and i didn't get scabies from her.

try it it works! and it is very cheap - which is good also. you can buy orange essential oil in the health food section of your grocery oil - where you would find lavender oil. also google orange oil for scabies and they also make a commerical spray that is similar made of the inside peel of the orange - the chemical is called D'Limonene.

Hi...i have epilepsy and have used the cream and never had a seizure in that period, permetherin can be obtained cheaply thru vet supply,,,, or online...its the same stuff just be careful doing any conversion .... note the percentages ie 3% or more ...also guava leaves boiled in water and the tea applied helps with the itching....if your in usa I have sympathy for you and your greedy corporate health care system. I have removed scabies for under 50usd...good Luck and God bless

When you are treating yourself for SCABBIES as well as other bugs, You also have to treat your house, car, clothes, and anywhere you have been....sit, sleep, etc. You have to treat anywhere the eggs have transferred to....floor. I hear Sulfur can be good for doing this. Look up how to do this. It sounds like you treated yourself and then got reinfected by your surroundings.

This sounds like what i wanna try. So it is totally harmless to rub all over yourself and sleep in it? How long should i leave it on? Can it be purchased at a farmers co op or the home depot? Are you fully cured? How much should i buy? Anyone else have sucesss with this?

I had two outbreaks of either a scabies mite attack or bird mite attack, but the doctor seems unable to conclusively diagnose me even after a skin biopsy and blood tests. By getting my house sprayed twice by an exterminator, cleaning the house more frequently and washing linens every day using Borax, and buying a new mattress, I have not had a third outbreak (yet). But I still have the itchy crawlies. So I am not sure if the mites are gone and that's just residual skin senstivity, or if I still have mites? If they are not biting...I hope that means they are gone.

I have isolated myself (and live alone) for the last 2 months. But my niece needs me to babysit while she goes through surgery. I am afraid I will pass whatever I have on to the baby if I still have mites.

I hope you got better. I contracted bugs after going to the San Diego area. They went away once but came back again. Both times in the fall, October this year, late November last year. They don't bite my husband (so he says).Could be rat or bird mites, since they look for shelter from cold weather.

I saw a remedy for dog scabies from a girl that worked in a shelter. They covered the dogs in mayo. I know when my daughter was young we had to "smother" the head lice. They went away AFTER, I made my husband get the headlice treatment, same as us, even tho he claimed he did not have them. People are strange.

So this time I am having a more difficult time eradicating, but not giving up. Jesus saves! I think soaking clothing overnight will help. purchasing the steam dryer and washer, mainly to keep bugs out of them! One utube site admits the bugs in humans are epidemic and the Drs don't know what to do? It's a Channel 7 news report. Visit that, you'll realize your itchies are not the worst!

You most certainly could pass it on. Wear surgical gloves. Change them often.

I just want to remind you guys that be careful with online products for curing scabies. and most important thing is that you should see a dermatologist and get an accurate diagnosis first. All my family members were treated with permethrine 5% twice within 10 days according to a diagnosis by a nursepractitioner. But we have more rashes. actually only myself has a few rashes before treatment with the toxic medication...But finally we found out that the rashes were allergic reaction to the medication. But we did not know and freaked out and thought we have more scabies, so we desperately searched online and bought "AllStop" for scabies on line. This product is so irritating that we all devloped rashes all over. So we went to see dermatologists and they all told us that it is allergic reaction. And they do not think we have scabies, they said we don't have any tracks!

I tried ___ bodywash, an antibacterial soap. It helps with any skin condition like scabies, acne, any sores that spread on body. I am unsure what I have but resembles scabies & sores people get with fibromyalgia that sometimes itch & burn & spread. What antibacterial ___ does (may be other soaps as well like safeguard my mom says helped for shingles) is peels off the swelling/sores & they are gone. Unfortunately they will come back if you dont treat with a chemical free remedy. U can do a google search to find out where to buy an inexpensive cure.

I have had scabies for about a year and tried the antibacterial soap route and it doesn't work. At least not for me. These are feisty little creatures we are dealing with and as we know the Permethrin cream doesn't work.

It's really a bit cynical to be washing like this daily, who really has the time for this? Have you heard of the saying sometimes you can be too clean... the environment has ways of taking care of it's own, but as far as internally cleansing that really is the answer.

I am a single mom of one and I have been fighting the battle of scabies for months. I tried, the creams (prescription), borax (not sure I gave this enough time to work), products by dermisil, but each time I thought I was getting better the next couple of days proved me wrong with more physical signs that I was still infected:(

To give you an idea of my routine, once I wake up I strip my beds of all linens (including pillows and comforter), bring them down to the basement and put them into the dryer... I run the dryer cycle once in the morning. Then head to work. After work and put the dryer on one more time and start a load of wash that has been store in black garbage bags, vacuum the floors, wash the bath tubs and clean all toilets, mirrors, sinks, etc......

Anyways, I recently read your suggestion and I am hoping this works for me as well. After researching Dr. Bronners products I am convinced that I will keep this product in my house for a lifetime because of its multi purpose.

Can you give me an update and any tips you learnt along the way. Some days I feel like crying and it sucks that I am isolated from my family in fear that I will pass it on to them. I would never want them to go through the nightmare I am going through.

Hello. I came upon this site hoping to find some more remedies for scabies, particularly an oral treatment. I've read through the various replies, and it looks as though some of the commenters do not have scabies, because animals cannot carry the parasite (from the numerous articles I've read anyway). Anyway, I've had them for a few years, and mostly used the lice poison found at the supermarket. It helped somewhat, but it's poison! So I looked and found a product called Lice R Gone that worked. It's an natural enzyme that eats away at their exo-skeleton. The only problem I am having is that I have them on my foot, and it's a bit difficult to get through some of the tough skin, and even one small missed are will cause an outbreak eventually. It was cheap, it smelled pleasant, and very effective. Once my foot is cleared up, I'm done! Hope you all find relief!

Do NOT try this treatment! I did and ended up with bad chemical burns on my arms from the hydrogen peroxide! I do not know at this point whether I will be permanently scarred by these burns as they are still very bad over a week after trying this approach.

Hi there, Using Thyme essential oil also works to relieve itches at night from Scabies. Thyme has a history of being used to treat Scabies too. Beware to get the real good quality thyme essential oil, i get mine from Young Living. The smell is strong so is the effect on the skin. may burn but its not that bad...if it stings too much - use a bit oil (Olive, sesame, any other etc) to soothe the burn if you are experiencing any of that

Scabies appeared on my wrist just under my wrist watch band. The doctor's prescribed ointment didn't help. However the oily juice from the tiny fruit of my neem tree gave immediate painless results. After applying the juice to the infected spot for a few days the itch stopped and the spot dried up and disappeared.

Acapulco leaves can cure scabies. Extract of the leaves can cure scabies.

I was diagnosed a week ago. Since then I have done two perm treatments, showered twice every day, washed linens and clothing every day. My question to you is concerning the "layers". Do you mean apply all of them one right after another? or one everyday? and you said they literally crawled off? were you serious or just making a point?

Well, I have itchy scalp, ear (flaky too) and now in one spot on my genitals. I've been missdiagnosed before' doctors told me I have psoriasis but I knew it's not true because my husband and my niece got it too. I am so so desperate to heal it :( I can't sleep during the night:(

I probably have scabies, and right this minute I'm going to take a bath with tee tree oil and coconut to kill them. We are washing the bedding EVERY DAY due to obsession.

I'd have to agree as I've contracted them through my dog having mange and doctors, vets, internet says you cannot see them.. Perhaps her child had lice, I KNOW you can see those as my nieces and nephew had them years ago and some were pretty darn big..

I'm currently treating my dog for sarcoptic mange with lime sulfur dip and myself with lice shampoo as none of the remedies on here has worked for my dog or myself. :( I tried the borax and peroxide and my dog screamed and it did help her belly a tiny bit but she is still fully infested.. I did the borax on myself and no go either.. I've tried vinegar, bleach and almost everything people suggested here with no relief, so I've had to turn to the vet and doctor even though I really didn't want all that harmful chemical on my dog or myself.. Such is life :( I've never had scabies before and it feels so gross

I would try natural sea salt in water... That may help. Also, working toward a good ph balance may help too. Apple cider vinegar on the spots may help as well... One other idea is hand sanitizer on spots.

Sea salt maybe the overall best long term help, others have posted much about sea salt and the benefits.

All of these ideas work great for little ones as well.

I have a little one as well and can't do steroids while I breastfeed but need some direction for curing on a little one...

For those of you using essential oils, be sure to use "therapeutic" grade oils. Also be careful of clove oil-it is a "hot" oil and be irritating to skin. Also always do a patch test first.

Amazing comment albeit quite disheartening. 1) Have you been able to heal yourself from this catastrophe yet? If so, how? 2) I have scabies probably crusted variety, tried ALMOST everything so far. Best thing that seems to help is Prescription permethrin cream and baths with slightly more than a cup of bleach. Neem oil and tea tree seem to help too but I haven't been able to keep it on long enough and over my entire body to know for sure. 3) You said don't take baths, even with bleach? since I haven't been able to rid myself of them, what to do for it?

Hi, Recently a puppy came into my yard that was real sick. I felt so sorry for him that I took him to the vet. They gave me vitamins, antibiotic for him and sent him on his way said he just was sick that is why he was losing his hair. Well, the doc was wrong he had sarcoptic mange, which is scabies and guess who got them me. I have spent 300 dollars on this dog and my family trying to get rid of them. We ran out of money to treat the dog or ourselves so I went online looking for help. I tried the borax and peroxide that helped somewhat.

The vet gave the dog ivermectin and the borax and peroxide baths seems to help. You have to keep your bedding washed and dried everyday you need a mattress cover. Wash them in borax and hot water. I spray everything down with lice spray.

P.S. don't let pets in area until dry and cover food and water well before spray. My mom's dog drank her water after I sprayed and got real sick almost died and I didn't even spray it near the water. I vacuum everyday. My husband and I have so far been able to keep the scabies to just us and the dog. We have my special needs son and my mom and dad live with us and they have not gotten it Thank God. We started using Germ x hand sanitizer on our bodies everytime we felt a little itch we would put it on that spot on top of lice treatment shampoo we put that on at night before bed and leave on for 8 or more hours. We started to get rid of them. I slacked off for 2 days and we got reinfested really fast so we are back on the germx washing and vacuuming and lice shampoo and borax baths for pup and us and it is going away again. All I have to say is keep it up it might take a while but I believe we are on the right track I pray do not slack off- those buggers reinfest fast. ps. puppy is a white long haired 6 month old poodle that is so sweet and smart I think he is the best dog our family is ever had Now if we could just get rid of the bugs that came with him.

I'm sorry, but you are perhaps misinformed. Keep in mind that there are many types of scabies mites and therefore, many sizes of mites. In my quest for relief, I've encountered several persons who, by all accounts, are suffering with forms of scabies that shouldn't affect humans, but so obviously do! The zip lock baggie in my freezer shows the 12-13 mites of many different stages or sizes that came out and were very visible on a white washcloth during a particularly successful treatment I tried, but which didn't rid me completely of the little buggers!

I haven't been completely cured yet, but Oregano Oil and Mineral Oil have greatly helped a case of scabies and I feel I am on my way to recovering. I actually had this case of scabies for several years, but it never got very bad as I had tried various over the counter remedies because I thought at first it was just dry skin or a skin irritation. When I finally realized what I had, I was upset because I did not want to take a neurotoxin. An herbalist recommended the oregano oil and almost instantly I began to see results. I've been taking it orally and also applying it topically. I have also been using mineral oil on my hands as well.

My name is Sarah.. and i have had Scabies for about a year now and i CANT seem to find a way to cure it. I just got back from my second day of high school and my last period is Gym! Today we had gym outside and it was about 28 degree's celcius! of course i am wearing pants because i am way to emparessed to show my legs or any other part of my body! So i change in the washroom! About scabies.....

HMMMM.....very nasty, indeed...huge, nasty sores and red bumps from my shoulders to my forearms I got this as an early Christmas present from one of my second grade students about 4 weeks ago.

Initially, my doctor misdiagnosed this condition as "stress" and I used every over-the-counter itch cream available. About 2 weeks ago my doctor decided to treat my condition as scabies. I used the Permethrin Cream 5% twice, then when I kept getting new spots at my hairline and on my torso she prescribed Lindane Lotion. Fortunately, I looked on-line before having the prescription filled. I found out that Lindane can cause seizures, convulsions, and death. It is recommended that Lindane Lotion NOT be used if one has open sores or has used some other scabies medication; both of which I had or had used.
I was surprised my doctor didn't know this.

I have an appointment with a dermatologist tomorrow and this morning I tried the Borax/Peroxide soak. My question is: Do you rinse your body with plain water after soaking and do you soak your scalp when you are using this method? I have very fair skin and I already feel as though I look like an alien from SCI-FI channel, so I'm just wondering what to do next? I should also mention that my hair is falling out in handfuls as of 1 and 1/2 weeks ago? Nice....

The only thing I found so far that stops the itching is Patron with three limes, chilled over ice, and sipped slowly. This remedy cannot be used in a school setting.

I am looking forward to trying this treatment. I've had scabies for almost a year, and my boyfriend has too. I didn't think is was going to be this tough to get rid of. I lost custody of my son to my ex due to this and lost all visitation until it goes away. I have done the Permethrin treatments and it did nothing but make them populate more, I think they like it. This "simple" problem has ruined the last year of my life. I am for sure trying this. I will post to tell if it worked. I pray it works...

I have used the Permetherin 5% cream and various "remedies" from here and elsewhere. The Borax/Peroxide soak has provided some welcome relief from the itching and apparently it does work somewhat, because I have actually been able to see a few of the dead critters in the water after looking through a magnifying glass. I have used sprays and treatments on the rugs, mattresses, got new pillows, etc. Yet still.... grrrr...

But today, I got so frustrated I tried using Elmer's glue. I just rubbed the washable non toxic school glue kind all over my areas until it dried into a white film. And it seems to be working! Hopefully they will either suffocate or get stuck in the glue trying to get out. Of course, I would not use this 'treatment' on the face, scalp, personal areas, etc... And I am not sure that it would be very good for the skin on a long term basis. But if someone is desparate, it might work for them.

Dont worry Itchy in Palo Alto...the little buggers are affecting us on this side of the hill too.

I want to thank all of you for your home remedies, we are going through our 2nd round and cant figure out from whom, from where or why. Had done the Cream thing last year but do not want to repeat.
