Need Help for Husband With Long Haul Covid - Daily Exhaustion and Malaise

Posted By Jocelyn (Denver, Colorado ) on 03/01/2022

My husband and I both had c@v[d in Feb/March of 2021. Our cases were moderate and then immediately morphed into long haul which has now dragged on for the better part of a year.
My husband started having liver issues (severely elevated liver enzymes) about 1-2 months into long hauling. He is a 48 year old man, very healthy with no prior health problems ever. The doctors have run every test they could think of, even did a liver biopsy and sent results off to Mayo clinic as well. They couldn't find any answers at all. They won't acknowledge any possibility that the liver issues could be at all connected to his C@v! D infection. His enzyme levels fluctuate constantly and without much rhyme or reason. All that the Dr's said was that he should come in weekly for blood draws to monitor the situation. My husband is struggling daily, feeling exhausted and ill.

Has anyone heard of this occurring with other post c@v! D sufferers? Is there a support forum out there for this sort of issue? Any talk of potential treatments worth looking into?
Just to reiterate, he was never hospitalized with severe c@v! D, he was very very healthy prior. The issue with his liver enzymes showed up a couple of months after the acute infection well into the long haul stage. He has been dealing with this issue for 10 months and Dr's have done nothing.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

I'm running out of leads on this and having difficulty advocating for his health. We're not sure what to do now.
Thank you.

Jocelyn,

I have previously written about the value of melatonin for treating Covid-19, but my intent when starting out with that article was to highlight melatonin as a post Covid-19 means of dealing with what I thought at the time was a high likelihood of Covid-19 aftereffects. After I had started writing the article, I realized that Dr. Neel's work was actually showing that melatonin was a very effective treatment for Covid-19. If you read the article, you can see how my thinking changes from a post Covid-19 treatment to an actual treatment for Covid-19.

Here is a link to that article:

https://www.earthclinic.com/melatonin-protocol-for-coronavirus.html

More recently, an article came out suggesting that melatonin may check many of the desired boxes as a treatment for Long Covid because of its multiple methods of action that would be well suited to dealing with many of the after-effects of Covid-19. Much of the activity of melatonin against Covid-19 is based on the idea that melatonin is the strongest antioxidant in the body through direct and indirect activities.

Much of the damage in Long Covid is thought to be caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and possibly reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and melatonin is a potent scavenger of both of these potent free radicals.

Add to that the potent anti-inflammatory qualities of melatonin and you can see why melatonin is likely to be beneficial in the fight against Long Covid. Here is a link to that article which goes into detail why melatonin should be very useful for this purpose :

https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/prp2.911

There are certain supplements that have shown synergy with melatonin in studies, such as vitamin D, vitamin C and Quercetin. Of these four, vitamin D takes the longest to show benefit because the body can take about two weeks or longer to convert vitamin D to its active form.

Some people report feeling tired the next day after taking melatonin so they find the use of melatonin intolerable. For those people, it is possible to increase melatonin levels naturally in at least two other ways without any side effects. One is free and the other is inexpensive. I wrote about those two here :

https://www.earthclinic.com/supplements/how-to-increase-melatonin-naturally.html

I'm sure you will get other suggestions from the Earth Clinic community and will likely find a good combination of remedies to suit the two of you. I hope you and your husband find this information helpful in your fight against Covid Long. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Hi Jocelyn,

I am not familiar with Long Haul COVID treatments, but I am aware of high liver enzymes and liver disease, having been told my case could go either way with severe Hep A many years ago, and numbers so high that no one in my doctor’s group had ever seen before. I survived by the grace of God. Dr. Burt Berkson of Las Cruses, NM is an expert on liver health and has written several books on the subject that are available on Amazon. He also has free podcasts on the internet. Dr. Berkson has a degree in microbiology and is also an MD. He has a clinic in Las Cruses, NM and his MD son works with him now. (Dr. Berkson may be retired by now, but his son (Arthur, I think) and his books could be of help). He uses the combination of Low Dose Naltrexone (usually 4.5mg by IV, initially, but also comes as a pill or liquid) and Alpha Lipoic Acid with great success. He saved two people from deadly mushroom poisoning (liver failure) when he was an intern with his critical thinking, connecting the dots and his refusal to just document their deaths, as he was instructed to do. He has now saved people from all over the world who come to his clinic for help. I believe he and/or his son could be of help to your husband, even if just by phone. Both LDN and ALA are inexpensive drugs. Best wishes.

Garlic, Lemon and Honey are three powerful ingredients from nature. All of them have strong anti-microbial properties and are great as a home remedy for fighting both colds and the flu.

Garlic is one of the most studied herbs in the medical database. It anti-microbial properties or very well known.

Lemon is a great source of vitamin C, anti-septic, anti-microbial

Honey has had a valued place in traditional medicine for centuries (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3758027/).

This tonic is very popular in Russian and German Herbal Medicine. The combination of these ingredients are extremely powerful. This solution has its roots in ancient Egyptian medicine.

Ingredients

– 4 large lemons

– 3 bulbs of garlic (30 cloves)

– 1 cup honey

– 2 liters of water

Preparation

Wash the lemons and squeeze them in a clean jar. Peel the garlic and crush them.

Meanwhile, put on a pot of water and let the water boil. Mix the lemon juice and the garlic. Pour the water over the mixture and steep like tea. Next, make sure the water is cool. Use a kitchen strainer to filter out the pulp. Add honey to garlic/lemon tea and stir til uniformed. Keep it in the fridge.

How to use: It is recommended to pour the elixir into a cup with a straw and sip throughout the day. You will get used to the taste. Make a fresh batch of this elixir as needed.

Note: If you want to increase the potency add ¼ to 1 tsp cayenne pepper (according to tolerance) to your cup, stir and sip slowly.

Lysine - 500 mg twice a day plus

Iodine 12.5 mg once per day

Take the above for three weeks beyond when your symptoms leave. Example, if symptoms disappear in five days (quite possible), then take the lysine and iodine for three more weeks. This worked for me.
