Modified on Aug 01, 2016 | Earth Clinic Team

As a runny nose is an uncomfortable nuisance, the opposite problem, an overly dry nose, is uncomfortable as well. Natural remedies can be used to treat the symptom of dry nasal passages, though it is important to figure out the root cause of an excessively dry nose to solve the problem once and for all.

Common Causes of Dry Nasal Passages

  • low humidity
  • dehydration
  • hypothyroidism
  • use of antihistamines
  • side effects of medications
  • menopause

Natural Remedies for Dry Nasal passages

Saline Solution

For temporary relief of dry nasal passages, make or buy a saline solution. To make your own, add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 1 cup of pure water.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a very thick and soothing oil. Put some castor oil into a bottle with an eyedropper. Lie on your back and drop 1-3 drops of castor oil into each nostril. Coconut oil or olive oil can be used instead. Coconut oil may be inconvenient in colder weather as it is solid at 76 degrees. Do not use vegetable oil or any hydrogenated oil in your nose.

Hydration

Chronic mild dehydration is a common un-diagnosed problem that can cause a multitude of health problems. Make your that your drink plenty of water or herbal tea throughout the day. Coffee, soda and energy drinks are not as helpful for hydration. Adding a bit of sea salt to the water you drink (just a pinch - less than 1/4 teaspoon) can help your body's cells retain the water.

Find Alternatives to Antihistamines

Antihistamines can cause nasal dryness. If you are taking anti-histamines or sleep aids, this could be the cause of your nasal dryness. Check out Earth Clinic's natural remedies for allergies and insomnia and see if you can find a natural solution to anti-histamines.

Steamy Shower

A steamy shower will allow your steam to circulate in your nasal cavity.

Humidifier

A humidifier near your bed will keep your nasal passages moist at night, which is when they are most likely to dry out the most.

Address Underlying Health Problems

If you have other health issues concurrent with your nasal dryness, consider that they could be connected. Treating menopause symptoms or hypothyroidism may end up solving your dry nose problem!
