Itchy Eyes

The eyes are two of the most sensitive organs of the body. Constantly exposed to foreign contaminant and other materials, the eyes must combat a number of issues. As such, the eyes may periodically become itchy and irritated. Dry, itchy eyes are most commonly cause by allergies but are, nonetheless, frustrating and uncomfortable.

Typically considered allergic conjunctivitis, dry itchy eyes are generally caused by seasonal or household allergens. As such, the condition is characterized by a number of additional symptoms aside from just itchy eyes. Common symptoms include watery eyes and eye redness or irritation. Slight inflammation in or around the eyes is also common. Likewise, if caused by a seasonal allergy, additional allergy symptoms, including runny nose, sneezing, coughing and a sore or scratchy throat, are commonly experienced in conjunction with itchy eyes.

The cause of itchy eyes is largely believed to be allergic reaction. A reaction occurs as the surface of the eye is exposed to an allergen or a foreign contaminant. As the eye is exposed, a reaction is triggered that marks the release of histamines, which in turn causes itchy, water eyes. Rubbing the eyes can worsen the reaction as the repeated rubbing motion triggers more and more release of histamines, causing a greater onset of symptoms.

Natural Remedies for Itchy Eyes

As itchy eyes are typically due to an allergic reaction, many natural remedies have been identified for treating the issue. Apple cider vinegar removes toxins from the system and relieves the reaction causing itchy eyes. Using a solution of saline, grapefruit seed extract and argentyn 23 dispersed in a neti pot is also capable of clearing the eye of infection and toxins. Coconut oil dispersed in a neti pot also has the capability of clearing the reaction and relieving eye itchiness.
