Natural Emphysema Treatment

What Is Emphysema?

Emphysema is a lung disease caused by the death of tissues that hold together the shape and function of the lungs. This tissue death causes a collapse of the airways and destruction of tissue around the alveoli sacs that are crucial for getting oxygen into the blood, leading to hypoxemia (decreased oxygen partial pressure in the blood). Emphysema, along with chronic bronchitis, is part of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (or COPD), which sees the degeneration of the lung pathways over time. The symptoms of emphysema are shortness of breath, hyperventilation, and an expanded or barrel chest.

The leading cause of emphysema is smoking tobacco over a period of years, with the smoker developing emphysema gradually. For that reason, 94% of emphysema diagnosis among Americans occurs over the age of 45. Emphysema can also occur as a natural part of aging, and is commonly found in people over the age of 85; second-hand smoke can also increase risk.
