I need help. my wife got sepsis from strep. the strep is gone now but it has affected her heart and kidneys. thankfully, she has now began urinating again although she still needs dialysis but she is recovering. my problem right now is that her blood count keeps dropping, most probably because from the kidney damage. how can I fix this? her condition is more of AKI rather than CKD. I have not seen posts for AKI or how to fix the blood count problem stemming from such injury. pls help... thanks

Jeff,

I have previously mentioned on EC that melatonin is protective of the major organs of the body, and the kidneys are not an exception. Here is a study demonstrating the protective effect of melatonin in kidney damage caused by the antibiotic, Vancomycin :

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC8370200/

Furthermore, melatonin has shown clear benefit in sepsis prevention in Covid-19 patients :

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC8506572/

And I have written extensively about the heart and cardiovascular protective effects of melatonin :

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/blood-clots-heart-disease-and-melatonin.html

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/melatonin-for-cardiovascular-disease.html

Given the enviable safety profile of melatonin, it may be worth having a discussion with your wife's doctor about melatonin. Dr. Shallenberger has stated that he gives all of his patients 180 mg of melatonin. Dr Neel has effectively treated over 2000 of his Covid-19 patients with melatonin given at 1 mg per kilogram of bodyweight.

Here is a conversion scale to help convert that pounds to kilograms of body weight to get and idea of how much that would be.

https://www.google.com/search?q=convert+145+pounds+to+kilograms&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS601US601&oq=convert+145&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i512l2j69i59j0i512l6.9036j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

As and example, let's say that a person weighs 145 lbs. 145 lbs = 65.7709 kilograms. So the dose Dr. Neel would use for such a patient is 65 mg of melatonin in 4 divided doses per day to his 145 lb. Covid-19 patient.

For a person who weighs 180 lbs., the dose changes with the weight to 81.6466 kilograms so roughly 80 mg of melatonin in 4 divided doses per day.

https://www.google.com/search?q=convert+145+pounds+to+kilograms&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS601US601&oq=convert+145&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i512l2j69i59j0i512l6.9036j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

For the sake of comparison, melatonin was given at 250 mg/day to diabetes patients and this dose improved cardiovascular parameters in these patients.

Thanks, Art.

She is now recovering at home. but can't walk as her legs is swollen with water. her urine is still brown and there seems to be some fresh blood that comes out along with it. maybe its hematuria from her kidney injury? What can I do to improve those conditions? can melatonin help as well?

Jeff,

You have to know if it is hematuria or not. If it is, her doctor may want to keep her a bit longer until she shows no more blood in the urine.

Once that is resolved, melatonin can help with the kidney recovery.

One pillow under the calves when laying down can help with the leg swelling.

Melatonin can also be helpful for the itching that is often seen in dialysis patients.

Here is a quote from the study :

>>> ' Based on the preliminary results of this study, melatonin can be introduced as an effective drug for management of pruritus in uremic patients. ' <<<

It may also be helpful for her to spend time in the early morning sun and later afternoon sun.

Lastly, a B vitamin multi such as B-50 should help with kidney recovery. Here are some examples :

I hear two things when I read this, activated charcoal and ginger. She can take activated charcoal caps 2 hours before or after food or medicine or supplements because it is going to clean up the works. 2 -3 caps with full glass of water. The ginger can be tea or fresh ginger dime size cut up into boiled water and may add a tiny pinch of clove. You already got lots of good help. A topical castor oil poultice would also help over the heart area, messy stuff but feels so good.

Dear Jeff,

I don't know if it is normal....is she under the care of a doctor? Has infection been ruled out?

The herb marshmallow root is soothing to the kidneys and bladder. It would be the first thing I would try. You can get capsules of these, and she can take 4 of them 4 times a day. If you can't find marshmallow root, try slippery elm bark.

Also, staying well hydrated with pure water. Avoid acidic foods, spicy foods, alcohol and tomatoes for a time as they are harder on the urinary system.

Cooked carrots, potatoes, rice, bananas, coconut and oats would be gentle things to consume.

I hope you feels better soon!
