Should we restrict chloride rather than sodium McCarty MF.
Pantox Laboratories, 4622 Santa Fe St., San Diego, CA 92109, USA.
Low-salt diets have potential for prevention and treatment of hypertension, and may also reduce risk for stroke, left ventricular hypertrophy, osteoporosis, renal stones, asthma, cataract, gastric pathology, and possibly even senile dementia. Nonetheless, the fact that salt restriction evokes certain counter-regulatory metabolic responses-- increased production of renin and angiotensin II, as well as increased sympathetic activity--that are potentially inimical to vascular health, has suggested to some observers that salt restriction might not be of unalloyed benefit, and might in fact be contraindicated in some "salt-resistant" subjects. Current epidemiology indicates that lower-salt diets tend to reduce coronary risk quite markedly in obese subjects, whereas the impact of such diets on leaner subjects (who are less likely to be salt sensitive) is equivocal--seemingly consistent with the possibility that salt restriction can exert countervailing effects on vascular health. There is considerable evidence that sodium chloride, rather than sodium per se, is responsible for the known adverse effects of dietary salt. Other non-halide sodium salts, such as sodium citrate or bicarbonate, do not raise plasma volume, increase blood pressure, boost urinary calcium loss, or promote stroke in stroke-prone rats. Nonetheless, these compounds have been shown to blunt the impact of salt restriction on renin, angiotensin II, and sympathetic activity in humans. This may rationalize limited clinical evidence that organic sodium salts can decrease blood pressure in salt-restricted hypertensives. Furthermore, organic sodium salts have an alkalinizing metabolic impact favorable to bone health. These considerations suggest that restricting dietary salt to the extent feasible, while encouraging consumption of organic sodium salts in mineral waters, soft drinks, or other nutraceuticals--preferably in conjunction with organic potassium salts and taurine--may represent a superior strategy for controlling blood pressure, promoting vascular health, and preserving bone density. Further clinical studies should determine whether a moderately salt-restricted diet supplemented with organic sodium salts has a better and more uniform impact on hypertension than salt restriction alone, while rodent studies should examine the comparative impact of these regimens on rodents prone to vascular disease.

And my husband manages his blood pressure with 1000mg of magnesium a day: 500 in the am, 500 before bed. Works like a charm."
09/06/2010: Anon from Anon replies: "Hi Sally. I was wondering what type of magnesium is your husband taking. Is it citrate, chloride or something else."
02/16/2011: Bob from Raymond, Maine, Usa replies: "Hi, I have been taking ASV/Baking Soda for my gout, and it seems to be doing very well. Though I do have another problem, and that is high blood pressure 145-185/70-90 the doctor has me on Lisinopril 10mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 12. 5mg and wants to place me on a higher dose. Can you tell me what to do as I would like not to take any prescription Thank you.
Bob"

Still my wife and I have been using magnesium taurate for some time without experiencing much of any benefit. We have now begun to double our dosage to 1000 mg a day and will see if that makes any difference.
Something else to consider that I learned recently: Insulin resistance causes you to lose magnesium and magnesium is essential for managing blood sugar. In the book, Living Low Carb by Jonny Bowden it says on page 299, "Insulin stores magnesium, and when and if your cells become resistant to insulin, you're not going to store magnesium very well. Magnesium is also necessary for the action of insulin, so the more magnesium you lose, the more insulin resistant you become.
Thus if you suffer from any sort of insulin resistance you will have a problem with absorbing magnesium. Recently we have both had higher blood sugar and are thinking that this could be an indication that we are in fact insulin resistant to some degree but have not had all the tests required to make a concrete diagnosis. Most doctors won't even order such tests unless there are very strong reasons for them to do so.

I can believe that my nasal congestion is almost gone within one week and my blood pressure is on the free fall.. 150/85 today and the doctor said you should continue taking your meds. Well I told her I didn't even take the meds and she was surprise and didn't believe me.
My falling asleep is also getting better but I still wake up three times a night but after taking few deep breaths with my eyes close I fall asleep again. Its a shame I can get most suppliment like gaba you guys talked about or the magniusm here in Nigeria. I could even get Apple Cider Vinegar organic here, I don't even know if the Apple Cider Vinegar I am using is good enough, It just apple I have cut into portion and put in water covered with white cloths but I did say its doing the job althrough slow compare to some of the result I have read here.

In the UK we talk about ' Brewers' droop' which comes from the idea that the master brewers, who always tested the hops and added them by hand to the vats of beer, could no longer satisfy their wives as a result of reduced testosterone after so much contact with oestrogen in the hops.
Just thought it's worth a mention. It's fine for women to take.
Blessings to all.
