High Cholesterol Problem - Hypothyroid Link?

Question by K (Meat-free Table) on 08/23/2013

Hello Ted, I am a great fan of yours on earth clinic. Even though I have not posted any messages yet, I have been following your posts on earth clinic for more than three years. I thought it is time to post a message of my own.

I have been having high cholesterol problem for the last 12-13 years. For close to 10 years, I strictly controlled my diet by avoiding all high fat foods. I didn't eat any saturated fat during those days. But about three years back, I found out that I was hypothyroid. Browsing through alternate medicine web sites like earth clinic, I realized that my low fat diet might have been the reason for the hypothyroidism. I started taking 25 mcg of lyvothyroxine and also increased my fat intake (such as clarified butter and coconut oil) . I started feeling more energized, but my cholesterol started going up. It went up to 280. When my doctor said she will have to put me on Cholesterol lowering medication, I decided to change the doctor and the new doctor prescribed lyvothyronine along with lyvothyroxine. That helped me to bring down the cholesterol for about a year. Recently I read your post that Lecithin will help in controlling cholesterol. Since I was consuming higher than normal fat, I decided to supplement Sunflower Lecithin. Three months later, I did a blood test and I find that my cholesterol has again gone up. It went from 204 to 259 in three months. I don't know if it is the Saturated fats that is causing the rise in cholesterol or the lecithin. I would appreciate if you can share your valuable thoughts on this.

To give you some of my backgound, I am 50 years old and I am vegetarian. I am underweight even though I have hypothyroidsm. Besides the thyroid medications, I take the following supplements: Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, Calcium, Magnesium, COQ10, Fish Oil including Cod liver oil, Kelp powder. I also take your ACV and baking soda remedy twice daily.

I am eagerly looking forward to your response. Thank you for all your help and your valuable suggestions on the earth clinic web site. Please continue to help the readers.

You cannot reduce cholesterol if lecithin is not granulated or de-oiled. It will increase your cholesterol levels if they have added vegetable oils as a filler. Cholesterol can go up if you have hypothyroid and/or consume vegetable oils including olive oil (except coconut oil). These vegetable oil industries keep costs down by mixing with other oils also. Most hypothyroid conditions are as a result of a fungus such as candida, so to kill these, you need something that supports hormone function and at the same time kills these fungi. The one that fits the the bill is borax, 1/4 teaspoon in one liter of drinking water mixed and add hydrogen peroxide 3%, one capful in the liter of water. Taking vitamin C ascorbic acid during meals will also help. Magnesium promotes candida overgrowth and certain fungus issues, but the effects can be reduced if it is 60% magnesium chloride mixed with 5% ammonium chloride solution, and take it as drops say 5 drops added during meals twice a day with a pinch of sea salt.
