The Lyme Vaccine for dogs has a number of reported side effects, including vomiting, lethargy, arthritis, and behavioral changes. There are natural treatments that can relieve side effects. It is best to have some remedies on hand before your dog gets vaccinated for Lyme disease, and it may also be wise to consider if it is a vaccine your dog needs in the first place. Dogs living in areas with few ticks or dogs living indoors with access to a tick free yard may not need the vaccine. A dog that has had a vaccine reaction in the past is more likely to have a reaction in the future.

Natural treatments for side effects include activated charcoal powder, children's oral rehydration solution, homeopathic Thuja, and the herb milk thistle.

If your pet is having a reaction at the site of the vaccine, activated charcoal powder or baking soda can be used as a poultice on the area. Mix one or the other with water into a paste. Fold into a cloth and place against the site of the reaction. One layer of cloth should be between the charcoal or the baking soda. Secure to the site with some cohesive tape. The top of an old sock is another way to help secure the poultice.

Activated charcoal powder can be given to a dog to help with vomiting or diarrhea. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of powder (per 25 pounds of body weight) with water and give by mouth.  Charcoal helps to remove toxins from the body. This can be dosed several times a day until symptoms stop. A dog may need some child's oral rehydration solution if he is having excessive vomiting and diarrhea. Giving it in small amounts with a syringe will make it more likely that he can keep it down.

Many pet owners have found homeopathic Thuja to be helpful when dealing with a vaccine reaction. Keep it on hand before shots and follow package directions. Do not give Thuja within two hours of giving activated charcoal powder internally.

For dogs that have ongoing health problems following a vaccine, the herb milk thistle may be helpful to detoxify the liver.
