Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that can be particularly painful and crippling. It can cause severe inflammation and pain, but it can also cause deformity and fusion of the vertebrae in the spine.

Natural remedies for ankylosing spondylitis include natural anti-inflammatories and dietary changes.

Hydration and Alkalization

The first place to begin healing of ankylosing spondylitis is to improve hydration and alkalize the body. Even mild dehydration makes the pain worse and tissue renewal and repair more difficult. However, you cannot be well hydrated with coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks. Ideally, you will be well hydrated with herbal teas and alkalizing drinks.

Into 12 ounces of water, add one tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar or one tablespoon of fresh lime juice. You can add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to make the drink taste less acidic. You can take this drink 2-4 times a day. But start with just once a day as this is a healing drink and has the potential to cause a healing reaction.

Dietary Changes

Maximizing your nutrition will give your body nutrients to heal and repair. Avoiding foods that aggravate your condition or cause inflammation is essential. Each person is unique. There is no one size fits all diet. You will need to experiment with your diet to see what helps you feel the best.

Where to begin?

Begin with eating higher quality foods. Use sugar, white flour, processed foods, and fast foods very sparingly, if at all.

You may benefit from a diet like the low starch diet, a gluten-free diet, or an anti-candida diet.

Use quality fats in your diet. Olive oil and virgin coconut oil are both nutritious.

Bacteria Connection to Ankylosing Spondylitis

There is evidence to suggest that ankylosing spondylitis has a bacterial cause.

Klebsiella pneumonia is the particular bacteria that is suspect. The same bacteria is associated with Crohn's disease, often a companion disease to ankylosing spondylitis. Because of this connection, it may be wise to consider some natural antibiotics. Sometimes your body will feel worse when you begin to kill off bacteria. For this reason, it is best to start slowly with antibacterial herbs and supplements and increase your doses gradually.

Turmeric root is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic herb. It is helpful for a variety of types of arthritis. Turmeric is also beneficial for pain and blood purification. 1/4 - 1 teaspoon is a typical dose, and it is usually taken 1-3 times a day.

Oregano oil is a potent antibacterial as well. You can buy oregano oil capsules or just rub a couple of drops of oregano oil into the bottom of your feet a couple of times a day.

Garlic is a powerful herb with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Adding fresh garlic to your food each day will give you another weapon against bacteria in your system.

Kefir, or a quality probiotic, is essential when dealing with any bacteria. It will also help your gut to work better.
