Seeking More Info on History and Medicinal Use of River Clay From Africa

I remember as child, at my grandmother's house, her housekeeper would tell of her grandmother's remedies using river clay and the consuming of the same. She claimed it was brought over from Africa by her ancestors. The knowledge of which clays to use and for what were closely guarded secrets. Have you heard of such things and is there any validity to it? Your answer would greatly appreciated.
