Is Iron Necessary for Older Women?

I am 84 amd I would like to know if Iron is a necessity at my age. Also I would like to know if any stores in my area carry black strap molasses? Thank you Louise

To Louise, Madera CA: Louise, if you are eating red meat (not processed) 3 or more times a week and fresh fruit & veggies, you probably do not need extra iron. However if you feel you are anemic then the Black Strap M. would be a good idea. Check with your doc. and remember a lot of processed foods have iron added. There is a debate about iron suppliments for the elderly both for and against. Eat fresh rather than cans/processed, that goes for all of us. You can get BSM at most supermarkets, I get mine @ Raley's.

Rule of thumb from my doctor is if you are female and at puberty until the time menopause ends you need to keep track of Iron levels. After menopause we no longer expel as much iron every month. I would ask your doctor what he or she recommends. Most doctors will accept questions be e-mail as well. Its one of the easiest ways to reach them now days.
