How to Conquer the Swallowing Urge?

Posted By Caroline (Boston, MA) on 01/26/2008

no one seems to have this problem, I cannot oil pull for more than 2 mins, cos my natural reflex is to swallow, do you have any suggestions as to how I can get over this? I am trying to do 2 mins and increase it by the day, unless you have better suggestion.

I just wanted to say to Caroline (1/26/2008) that I understand her problem because I get the urge to swallow quite easily too. For me the simple solution is to tip the head forward so that the oil leaves the back of the tongue and mouth for a few seconds. I can then lift my head up and resume oil pulling until the urge to swallow arrives again. In time, you will be able to control it better.

I thought I would have trouble with my gag reflex from the taste and texture. But I just did the oil pulling for the first time using extra virgin olive oil and it wasn't bad. I actually just sat and read testimonies from this site and stayed distracted, and kept my head forward. I hope to see results as a lot of you have. Will keep updating. Will also be purchasing sunflower oil since it seems to be the most beneficial... Fingers crossed!

Just started myself. I find if I put a paper towel in a glass and keep it handy I relax and know that in an "emergency" I can spit the oil out and start over. The only problems so far is one time I had a need to sneeze and another time a need to cough due to tickle in throat. (The paper towel is to catch drips, if any) and also can be neatly put in trash after.
