Detox Reaction from Kefir for IBS-D

Posted By Granny (Pulask) on 09/28/2016

Possible die off? been taking 4 oz dairy kefir for 6 months now for ibs-d. Seemed to be helping. But Sunday morning I felt crummy, then got a sore throat, had bad diarrhea Monday and Tuesday. 6 immodium later and I'm still very loose. At the same time I had my skin break out and got sores in the roof of my mouth. Could this be a die off reaction? I intend to continue the kefir, hoping to recolonize my gut, but gee whiz. Or did I get some passing bug?

Dear Granny,

I would tend to think you are experiencing some sort of stomach bug. I wouldn't completely rule out that it is a detox reaction, but that would seem unusual after six months of use.

I drank 8-12 oz of Kefir milk for several years some days a quart.

All I can tell it did was put the #'s on me. I have been reading that probiotics cannot make it past stomach acid. No one has proven it can or cannot get past the acid.

I did find one probiotic that states: "Unlike other probiotics, the key probiotics in Garden of Life Primal Defense HSO Probiotic Formula can thrive in the toughest digestive environments and are undeterred by stomach and bile acids."

This week I placed an order for a 60 day supply, that should be plenty of time to see if it helps me. It is priced high but cheaper then a fecal implant :)
