What Can I do for My Dog With Anal Gland Discharge?

Posted By NaAa (Slovensko) on 07/15/2015

Hi, I am Nadia, I am from Slovakia. I am very frustrated because of my dog' s anal gland (one). It started two weeks ago, that it produces too much secret. There is no infection. Just too much liquid every second day. She is licking, and nervous, like still shaking her head, ears... Now it was expressed and flushed with betadin + antibiotic ointment. We also changed the diet to hyppoalergenic one week ago. Please what should be done, when the gland is producing this liquid too much, every second day like crazy :(

The wonderful Theresa from Minneapolis, MN has been helping pet owners and their beloved pets around the world on Earth Clinic since 2013.

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Hey Nada!

A couple things might be going on.

I am concerned about the licking and the shaking and your girl not being comfortable - was this due to an impacted or infected anal gland? Did the medication take care of it?

It is possible there is a medical reason such as a tumor or anal fistula that is causing the anal glands to leak; if your vet has expressed the glands and checked them out and no tumor, then it could be your girl needs more fibre. Try adding 1 tsp canned pumpkin [plain, not the spiced type for pies! ] to her food at each meal. The extra fibre may help with emptying the glands fully each time your girl has a bowel movement.

Please give it a try and report back!

To Nadia,

I'm concerned about your dog "shaking her head, and her ears". You should go to the vet about that, so the vet can rule out any serious ear infection.

As far as her anal glands are concerned, you need to confirm with your vet that the issue is her anal glands. Maybe she's pregnant?? Ask your vet! If it is an anal gland issue, and if you have the breakfast cereal called "Shreaded Wheat" in your country, you could give her about a 1/3 cup mixed in with her food. You could also try adding a teaspoon of organic virgin coconut oil, melted or not, into her food. Do the Shreaded Wheat and coconut oil each time you feed her, for a couple of weeks, and see if that helps.
