I REALLY need help here.. I have read through what everyone has said and have the Activated charcoal, Pepto, Pedialyte and apple cider vinegar and these poor pups keep dropping .. I am keeping them hydrated every 15 minutes unless they vomit or potty and then I give more fluids (hydrate) but for whatever reason they are not responding to this.. Last night I had two cross the rainbow bridge within 1 1/2 hours of each other and their brother crossed 2 days before that. I have steadily been on the remaining 3 but cannot seem to get them pulled through..someone PLEASE HELP ..any other suggestions??? I am not giving up on any of them and my heart is broken beyond words

Bonnie, just an afterthought... It wouldn't hurt to give a extra dose colloidal silver 5mls before you go to bed either. Are you giving them vitamin c?

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Hey Ae!

Parvo is typically an affliction for puppies, though it has been seen in immune compromised adults.

I keep Activated Charcoal on hand *just in case* of Parvo for my puppies, but also any time they have loose stools.

You certainly could feed it daily as a prophylaxis, but it may be.. over the top.

What I certainly would recommend is building up the immune system by supplementing on a rotating basis: Vitamin C, kelp, spirulina - and anything else you find that might apply. It is important to rotate the supplements as any supplement when given long term on a daily basis will result in that particular supplement losing effectiveness.

gGod luck. You need calories. I have heard people having success with baby food, plain Greek yougurt. No more than a teaspoon per 30 minutes. The old remedies that applied to us as kids. Once he is keeping something down, you can gradually increase the volume very slowly. Also stay away for baby food with grain - sweet potato is a good option. Once things are staying down for 24 hours, try boiled chicken but only in small quanties. good luck, parvovirus is a very nasty disease.

Hi there, Our dog got parvo, I gave her echinacea tincture, I think it was half an eye dropper. I didn't really measure though, I just wanted her better. She was really skinny and there was blood in her vomit and poo. I hope this may help.

Hey Joseph!

There are a few things you can do.

Dehydration is the main killer of dogs that contract parvo - so see if your vet will sell you/supply you with a couple of bags of saline solution and the tubing and needle kit so that you can administer liquids under the skin should your dog become dehydrated.

Pepto-bismol will help coat the inflamed stomach lining and inflamed intestine lining; dose 1/2 teaspoon every hour to 2 hours.

Activated charcoal can help draw out the disease from the intestines; see if you can get your dog to take some activated charcoal in broth or better yet pedialyte solution [NOT gatorade]. You want a solution that will provide electrolytes - you can google up home made pedialyte formulas for dogs. Make a thin solution of activated charcoal and the electrolyte solution and do your best to get him to take a few drops at a time.

If you can get the pepto down, along with the AC/electrolyte solution you will be doing good. Check frequently for dehydration and hydrate if needed. Don't worry so much about getting him to eat food at this point, just get the pepto, AC and electrolytes down.

If he starts to perk up do not stop - keep it up. You may be able to cut back from every 2 hours to every 4 hours dosing the remedies, but keep it up for the next few days. If he regains his appetite you can feed him soft canned food but add the AC to this - keep dosing the AC for at least a week after he seems fully recovered.

Good luck and please report back!

Hey Bonnie!

If these were my puppies I would only give the pedialyte and activated charcoal and perhaps pepto. Are you sure they are hydrated? Try the skin pull test to check [google to find out how]. My thoughts would be they simply are not getting enough or keeping enough liquids to stay hydrated. One contributor gave their puppy saline solution [the sterile kind for contact lenses] under the skin with a hypodermic needle and syringe. My preference would be to take them to the vet for hydration, but I would try the saline in a pinch.

Other thoughts: are you keeping them warm? If puppies are not warm they cannot digest or absorb nutrients. Make sure they are warm; 4 week old pups should be kept at about 75 degrees F.

Please report back!
