My yorkie mix with heart murmur

Posted By Jillian (Pittsburgh, Pa) on 12/04/2013

my yorkie was diagnosed this month with a grade 2 heart murmur. she is 5 years old and was first diagnosed at age 6 months with what was termed minor heart murmur..I have gone through the posts looking for holistic approaches to helping my girl with this problem.. I wondered how I could get some feed back from any pet owners who have the same situation. I read from someones post that she recommended a human grade heart supplement called cardio plus by standard process. in addition to this, it was recommended to give whole body support by standard process as well. I have been a bit on the hesitant side regarding giving human grade supplements. I don't want any adverse side effects. Please help me connect with any groups of people who are in my same situation! hearing other testimonials and what has helped them, would be such a relief!!! Thank you so much! Jill she is currently taking canine cardiac support and whole body support.. I wanted to supplement with other things also.. heard D-ribose among other things helps. just confused as to what formula I should use.

Theresa

The wonderful Theresa from Minneapolis, MN has been helping pet owners and their beloved pets around the world on Earth Clinic since 2013.

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Hey Jillian!

Did your vet determine the cause of the murmur? Knowing the type of murmur may help determine the treatment approach.

You probably have seen this already, but just in case:

http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2011/07/21/what-your-vet-looks-for-when-listening-to-your-dogs-heart.aspx

My holistic vet routinely prescribes human grade Standard Process products for my fur kids; I can't think of one instance in the last 20 years where he has ever prescribed a Standard Process "dog" product. Not an expert, but IMHO you are just fine using the human grade Standard Process products on your dog.

I have very limited experience with canine heart murmurs, however you may find support groups in social media outlets such as face book.

Hi Teresa! Thank you for your reply! My holistic vet did not offer any reason for what could be causing her heart murmur. he did not appear concerned regarding the cause.. I went online and discovered it could be related to anemia, thyroid condition, high bld pressure, ..but my vet never told me that. He also did not suggest a treatment plan and said there is nothing I can do to help her heart at all! (YEAH RIGHT) I just felt totally thrown off by his lax attitude. I refuse to accept that gibberish though and will do what ever it takes to get her healthy again.... my dog has been on a raw diet due to past bladder infections. this current vet actually calls him self Holistic and suggested the raw diet, although I must add, it has been beneficial to her and her urin ph has been in the mid range, so for that, I can't complain. yet no treatment plan is in order for the grade 2 heart murmur which is not acceptable in my opinion. I live in Pittsburgh and he is the only so called holistic vet. I am taking the initiative and setting up a treatment plan based on the protocol of Dr.sinatra...previous posts revealed he has had amazing results with patients. I had also mentioned at my appointment that I wanted to supplement her to strengthen the heart..he told me it was not going to make a difference . Kate from Northport ny had a great protocol (based on Dr.Sinatra protocol)that I wrote down and am going to order the products asap I was just a bit nervous giving my 17 pound yorkie a bunch of human grade supplements, but if it works, im ready to try it!! thanks so much for any info you may come across in the future as I am always eager to read what other pet owners have had success with.

Hey Jillian!

How disappointing the experience with your vet.

I remember undertaking the task of locating a holistic vet 20 years ago; 'holistic' at that time meant vets who were willing to purchase single vaccines as opposed to the combos! I kept calling and interviewing and found gold: my holistic vet does alternative, western, chiro, CRA and EFT and the definition of wholistic; he knows that we each contribute something to the relationship, that we both care for my pets. Sadly too many vets see their relationship with their clients as 'teller/doer': vet tells client what to do and client does it, end of story.

I hope if you continue with your vet you share your journey, as yours is a teaching one - and this forum is lucky to have your participation.

I would ask the vet WHY. Why do you not feel a grade 2 has a chance of improving, why do you say no supplements or nutritional support will provide no benefit or help? It could be your vet has had many experiences that caused him to form this opinion, or perhaps too few. So I encourage you to see yourself as a teacher disguised as a client with this vet.

I know as a breeder a grade 2 to me means bad things; you police your bloodlines to determine a genetic pattern, you spay or neuter the parents to avoid reproducing the trait, you spay or neuter the affected puppy prior to placement [you find out about the murmur during the well puppy exam prior to placing the pup for sale], so that puppy cannot be used for breeding to propagate the trait. Typically for the puppy - with a grade 2 - they live a normal life. I have sight hound racing friends who had 1 whippet with a congenital grade 5 and this dog raced - and well - and lived a normal life span. I find it unbelievable, and yet it was true.

The prognosis for your baby might be like that whippet with the grade 5; those owners fed it regular dog kibble.

But how much **more** supported your baby is and how lucky to have this support nutritionally at an early age, before any debilitating symptoms require it.

Totally awesome - please keep us posted!

Hi Jillian, I had a little rescue dog with a severe heart problem. I have him co-q10 and he did remarkably well. Greetings, Om
