My rescue yorkie has terrible allergies

Posted By Jersey Girl (NJ, US) on 12/03/2014

I have an 11 yr old yorkie rescue. Have had her 2 yrs. A little sweetheart from day 1 but has awful allergies. She has yeast infection. I bathe in malaseb shampoo, get d-d venison food from vet (that my dog does not like). My question is: can I give her acidophilus because she is on enalapril. I'm told it's a lifelong med. She is beyond itchy skin, red, losing hair. I give her her pills with organic coconut oil twice a day, after reading some posts I will be putting it in her food and will be using act as an after rinse. Happy I found this site.

Theresa

The wonderful Theresa from Minneapolis, MN has been helping pet owners and their beloved pets around the world on Earth Clinic since 2013.

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Hey Jersey Girl!

The enalapril is a medication prescribed for congestive heart failure; a side effect of the enalapril is allergies :( I could find nothing that would contra-indicate the use of probiotics; if this were my dog I would use them.

I would also consider something that may have a bit more *kick* than the Maleseb; Ted's Anti-fungal/Anti-staph dip.

You will need:

Milk of Magnesia [magnesium hydroxide]
Epsom salts [magnesium sulfate]
Borax [sodium tetraborate]
1% hydrogen peroxide solution [start with the 3% solution you buy in the brown bottle at the super market or drug store]

Process:

Empty hydrogen peroxide into larger bottle - I use an empty 1 gallon vinegar jug. Add to this 32 oz filtered or distilled water - I just refill the hydrogen peroxide bottle twice - and dump into the jug. What this does is change your 3% hydrogen peroxide into 1% hydrogen peroxide. You now have 48 oz of solution. To this add 4 tablespoons EACH of Milk of Magnesia, Epsom Salts, and Borax. I cap the jug and then let it sit in a sink of hot water to get it up to a nice warm temperature. When the solution is warm, I then bathe my dog in the tub and make sure I rinse out the soap well. I then allow the tub to drain and when the bath tub is empty I then use my hands to wipe down the body to remove as much water from the hair as possible, then I stop up the drain and then pour the jug of warm solution over my dog. I use a plastic cup to scoop up the solution from the bottom of the tub so I can pour it over my dog again. Keep this up for at least 10 minutes - dosing the dog over and over again with the solution, making sure it reaches everywhere and particularly on the affected areas. I let my dog drip off in the tub and then I put her in a crate with no bedding to continue to air dry for another half an hour - temperature permitting; you may need to bump up the heat in the house or crate her in a small room with a space heater. The solution continues to work when wet, so the air dry process in the crate allows the solution to continue the therapeutic action until your dog is dry.

Give the dip a try and monitor your results! It is inexpensive and may provide relief to your girl.

Hello, Jersey Girl ---

Please beware of life long "medicine". You will be loading your doggie with poisons, using more meds for the meds, etc. It is a lucrative business.

Healing has nothing to do with consuming meds "for the rest of one's life". They do not know how to heal as theirs is strictly a business designed by big pharma. Heal a client, loose profit.

Wake up, your dear doggie will thank you. I write this out of real concern. All the best and maybe you will find to research on EC.

Namaste, Om

Hi! Jersey Girl,

Stop feeding your dog Hills dog food. It is a scam between your Vet and the dog food company to sell extremely poor grade "Prescription" [ what a joke ] dog food at exorbitant prices. Main ingredient potato, which is not only not good but actually bad for your dog along with cellulose, [saw dust] etc. no wonder your dog has allergies, good for the Vet though.

The best diet you can feed your dog is a diversified raw meat diet and since your Yorkie is so small it will not cost much to feed her. Look up " REEL RAW Dog food " , no cheap veggie fillers just a mix of USDA approved, human grade meats, bone and organs.

Many allergies are the result of owners well meaning use of shots, flea and tick topical pesticide poisons and heart worm pesticides and commercial dog food. My Amber is out a lot hiking, etc. so she gets a heart worm and lime disease CHECK every September and December, which are the times heart worms will hatch in PA if my Amber was exposed . If she wasn't exposed, why treat her with dangerous drugs all year long for something she doesn't have? Again, good for the Vet, bad for my Amber.

If your Yorkie is a house dog, she probably doesn't need all the shots your Vet would love to scare you into either, which lower her immune system which results in allergies, mites, ring worm, on and on, again good for the Vet. My Amber gets a rabies shot, that is it. It is sad to say that most Vets are profit driven and don't care about us or our dogs at all.

There is lots of information on the internet, Check the food ingredients in the food, check the side effects of the meds your Vet wants to sell you and don't buy the meds from your Vet, get a script and get it at the pharmacy. Many Vets double even triple the prices of meds, aren't they nice. When I go to a Vet and I see ' Prescription ' food, Flea and tick neuro toxins, that tells me what that Vets agenda is. See if you can find an Holistic Vet, hard to find but worth it.

Remember this, no commercial foods, no flea and tick killer, no heart worm killer, no shots, no antibiotics, no prednisone etc. These all compromise her immune system which is why dogs have all these maladies in the first place. Buy species appropriate food, lots of exercise, no stress, and lots of love. There are no miracle cures, and many supplements make things worse. It will take time for your little girl to get healthy again so be patient. I notice you are giving your girl Enalapril, does she have a bad heart or kidney disease? Enalapril is not something I would ever give my Amber, a pretty dangerous drug. Please do your research on everything before you give her anything. Let me know how she is in about six months. Yours, Robert Lovemyamber

P.S. Don't forget to thank our Theresa, she is great and gives so much of herself to help everyone. Thanks from me too. Robert lovemyamber

Hey Jersey Girl!

Did you ever get a confirmed diagnosis as to what your yorkie is allergic to? Does she have a food allergy or sensitivity? Allergies tend to be acquired as dogs age and they certainly can develop sensitivities to diets they have been fed since day 1, however they may also have sensitivities to pollens, grasses, molds and the like. Knowing what triggers your girl can help with diet selection. While I agree that *most* Hill's diets are garbage at best, the prescription diets tend to be effective at what they do; the ingredients in the d/d don't appear terribly objectionable, however the carbs are provided by potatoes and that will feed yeast - so a switch to a home made or RAW diet or high quality grain free kibble might be something to consider.

Something else to consider to combat systemic yeast is borax in the drinking water; a typical dose is 1/4 teaspoon of borax in 1 liter of drinking water and this as the only source of drinking water for 7-14 days. Given the cardiac condition my concern would be that a rapid die off of yeast would cause toxins to quickly build up in her system and cause undue stress on the organs. If this were my dog I might consider 1/8 teaspoon borax in 1 liter of water and have this be the only source of drinking water every *3rd* day. So every 3rd day offer the borax water and the other 2 days regular drinking water.

Hi Theresa. I think grass is one allergy; she is so itchy when she comes in. I have had the little sweetie 2 yrs and the rescue doesn't give you any health info, which they probably don't have. The dog was surrendered at 8 yrs old; they pulled 12 teeth while she was in rescue. I asked vet if she had heart issues, she said no. The enalapril is for protein in kidneys. I think I will try to find a site to cook her meals. She hates this venison d-d. I think Yorkies are picky anyway. My other Yorkie was 14, a little picky but not like Daisy. I think I will ask vet to give me a referral to vet derm. I'm concerned about this enalapril lifelong because she is much worse since starting meds.

Vet says not the meds. I did call the drug co. They told me she could be allergic to ingredients in med. I'm at my wits end. I hate to see her so miserable. The last time I took her in to vet because I thought her leg was getting infected and it was.

Hi, Jersey Girl ---

Would you try colloidal silver internally and externally? It will deal with the itch and more. Namaste, Om

Hi! Again Jersey Girl, Not, MAY TRY A DIFFERENT DOG FOOD. If you care about your little sweetie the most important thing you can do is feed her species appropriate food and it doesn't come in a bag or can. My Amber had every problem your girl has. Now she doesn't!!! You can't just do part of what needs to be done, you will only be defeating your purpose. It has been years and you are frantic. It will not happen overnight, you have to be patient and tackle the whole problem to get her immune system strong to have her healthy again because these are all immune diseases.

Please, please, don't take short cuts you will only be wasting your time and your little girl's quality of life. She may not like raw food at first, my cats sure didn't but when nothing else was ever available, absolutely NO treats or goodies of any kind, they began eating it and now look forward to it. My dog Amber has always been crazy about it. Other foods, kibble etc. in addition to promoting allergies, digest differently and will throw your Raw meat diet off. A raw meat diet is not to be confused with a raw food diet that contains veggies which your girl can't digest and aren't good for her. Follow Theresa's advise on dips, she is the expert, and get your girls system clean of everything else and check out REEL RAW DOG FOOD on your computer, you will be glad you did. They can answer many of your questions about your little girls problems and their customer service is great. Ask Alissa, she is very informative and will answer your e-mails promptly every time. I really care Jersey GIRLS Keep in touch. Robert Lovemyamber

Hi Robert, I WILL change her food and speak to my vet about the Enalapril. I appreciate the advice I need it. My other Yorkie did not have yeast issues, but did have allergies and was diabetic for 6 yrs and blind. I do believe it was from 3 vets in the other practice I used to go to; they had her on long term steroids. I will check out the Reel Raw dog food. Thanks so much Robert, I'll keep in touch. Jeanne
