Live in Rural Area and Need Suggestions for Dog's Itchy Skin and Paws

Posted By Oldmatelot (Elgin, On) on 09/13/2015

I am looking for something to apply topically to our rescue dog's underbelly and feet as since I gave her a bath she has been scratching and licking/biting her feet and has them raw in places.

I live rurally and a large grocery store is about 50 miles each way. Would regular apple cider vinegar be of any use as we only have a small store here. I don't think she has ever had a bath as she was never in a house until she came here.

Thanks for any help you can give

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Hey Oldmatelot!

I would use whatever vinegar you have on hand for an after bath rinse; white is good for this and usually cheaper than ACV. I dilute 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water and rinse through and saturate all over her body as a final rinse after you have rinsed out the shampoo. Do not rinse the vinegar off - leave it on and let air dry if you can, or lightly towel dry.

Other things you can do - add baking soda to her water; this can bring relief sometimes right away or within a few days. In bad cases I do 1 tablespoon baking soda to 1 liter water and give this baking soda water for a week. If she turns her nose up because the water tastes funny try 1/4 tablespoon for a couple days and increase every few days to 1 full tablespoon and then after 5 days you can reduce every few days back down to 1/4 teaspoon as a maintenance dose.

Another thing to watch is the food; if you have upgraded her food - say taken her off a corn or grain diet and have her on a grain free diet - you might be seeing her detox via her skin. Keep her on good groceries, no red food dyes, no sugary treats - try the baking soda water and for sure do the vinegar rinse, and then report back please!

Theresa,

Thanks for replying --- We have had her on acana potatoe and chicken -- and she has been on this for a couple of years -- What I have done is mix 1 to 1 with water the apple cider vinegar and sprayed on her underbelly and paws and pads. And rubbed it in and let it air dry ( the apple cider vinegar is just regular) - I will try the water - once I get some powder. She has had only 1 spray and rub treatment -- yesterday- should I do this once a day, twice a day etc ?

Hey Oldmatelot!

If this were my dog I would start by bathing the entire dog in Ted's mange remedy; even if your dog does not have mange, this is a good way to cleanse the skin and you have to do the entire dog, not just spray the affected areas. Once you have the entire dog dipped you can then spot treat the affected areas with the vinegar solution. And then judge by your results how often to apply- you might find that after the mange dip you only need to spot treat once per day, or once every three days -play it by ear.

Along with alkalizing you might consider Ted's Borax protocol for pets; I rotate every few weeks between plain water, baking soda water and borax water -and it is good for YOU to drink too!
