How Much Turmeric Should I Give My Cat?

Posted By Kcompassion (Texas) on 09/04/2015

Need insight please. Beginning to give turmeric to my approx. 15 lb. cat Noah (not overweight, just an unusually tall/large cat & is ideal weight for his size) for mass that began protruding from one nostril several days ago. Don't know yet if a polyp or cancer.

Having not found this group yet and following other on-line recommendations to give 100 mg 2x day for a cat, I bought turmeric capsules at Whole Foods (turmeric root extract 300 mg. capsules, 95% curcumin, not a standardized formula) and started giving Noah 1/3 capsule (about 100 mg) 2x day.

Seeing that many of you give powder instead, would that be better quality than these capsules? And it seems that 1/4 tsp. powder 2x day (as the admin here recommends for a cat) would be giving more than the little 1/3 capsule 2x day that I'm giving (1/3 capsule in volume is much less than 1/4 tsp.)

And if I should go get powder instead, does it have to be from an Indian food store to be good enough quality? There's not one in my area.

In case this is cancer, I want to give the highest and most quality dose I can to Noah. Thanks for any help!

Dear Kcompassion,

When I want the highest quality turmeric, I order it from Mountain Rose Herbs, or get it from a local health food store that I know is reputable. Frontier Herbs are also very good.

I think 1/4 or 1/3 of a teaspoon twice a day is great for your cat. I don't tend to get much more exact with turmeric. A sprinkle is too little. A teaspoon is too much. The only risk of having too much would be constipation, so watch the cat's stool.

Let us know how it goes!
