How do i know if my elderly cat is hypothyroid

Posted By Petagrrl (Bridal Falls, British Columbia) on 12/06/2014

My 15 year old DSH kitty, Phoebe, has developed greasy fur, matting, is much more clingy (which I'm loving) and has increased urination. She will have periods where she'll race around like a kitten and longer periods where she just naps away for long periods of time. I've been reading up on the possible causes of these symptoms and keep seeing "hypothyroidism" as a possible cause.

I am on a VERY fixed income and don't have the luxury of being able to take her to a vet even though I desperately want to.

What are some ways that I can treat her at home?

She LOVES coconut oil (pure virgin, of course) so I let her lick as much as she wants every day but she won't eat it if I mix it in with her food. So finicky. I appreciate any advice you can provide. Thank you in advance from both of us. =)
