Cocker suffering from atopic dermatitis

Posted By Lucy (New Jersey, US) on 02/10/2015

Hi my name is Lucy. I need advice because I do not know what do with my sweet dog.. My dog is often sick. The disease comes back very often. My dog's name is Buddy, it's an American Cocker Spaniel suffering from disease Atopic Dermatitis (inhale allergies). Resolved secondary severe Malassezia / staph. Dermatitis. The doctor gives me medicines and shampoos but the disease still returned. Atopic medicines every month are very expensive and drug called atopica since stopped working well. I spent a lot of money in Vet and therefore I would like to try something natural. I used for one year skin-eze natural products that were helping the dog quite nicely, but now stopped helping.

My dog is sick again. Has a red chest, front legs, ears, mouth, eyes etc.. And odor. Skin looks like burns and then come skin black only on the front foot. Buddy is licking his legs and chest. Buddy is allergic to food containing flour, soybeans, potatoes, nuts. I'm cooking for him. What would you advise me? Best regards, Lucy

Theresa

The wonderful Theresa from Minneapolis, MN has been helping pet owners and their beloved pets around the world on Earth Clinic since 2013.

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Hey Lucy!

A couple of ideas for you!

To help build up your dog's immune system, you might consider supplementing Colostrum and to combat the inflammation that occurs with immune disorders also supplement Quercitin and yucca.

You might also consider supplementing probiotics or acidophillus and also digestive enzymes such as papaya.

To combat the yeast from the inside out, consider alkalizing your dog's drinking water with baking soda - 1 teaspoon per liter is a typical amount to start, and you can lessen or stop after a week or two. You might also consider Ted's Borax protocol to eliminate yeast in the GI tract:

Posted by Ted (Bangkok, Thailand) on 12/12/2014

"The borax dose is the same regardless of the weight of dogs. In the end small dogs drink less than large dogs. The only difference is the sex of dogs which the female dog requires half the dosages male dogs.

So a female dog is always 1/8 teaspoon per liter dose. And male dogs is 1/4 teaspoon per liter water. Weight is irrelevant.

Timing:
Borax dosage for 1 week. Then 1/2 dosage in week 2. Stop for 1 week. Resume.

or

Borax dosage for 4 days, then no borax/water for 3 to 4 days. Continue on/off schedule until ailment clears."

To combat the yeast from the outside in, consider Ted's Anti-fungal/Anti-staph solution:

Ingredients:

  • 1 - 16 oz bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 bottle Milk of Magnesia
  • 1 box Epsom salts
  • 1 box Borax
  • Filtered or distilled water

Method:

Dilute the 16 oz brown bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide to a 1% solution by dumping the bottle into a jug and adding 32 oz of filtered or distilled water; I just fill up the empty brown bottle with water and dump it in the jug twice. Now you have 48 ounces of a 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide.

Add 4 table spoons EACH:

Borax, Epsom salts, and Milk of Magnesia.

Shake the dickens out of the solution. I usually run a tub full of hot water and set the jug in the tub, and then when the tub cools where I can bathe my dog the solution is by then an agreeable temperature for the dog. Bathe the dog in doggy shampoo or what have you, get all the crusty lesions gently scrubbed up and loose skin and scabs off and rinse well. Now drain the tub and when empty plug it up again and now pour the jug of prepared solution over the dog. I use a plastic cup to scoop up the solution and keep pouring over the dog. I try to keep this up for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes I pull the plug, squeeze off any extra water with my hands and let the dog drip a bit in the tub, and then I take the wet dog with bare hands and put her in a crate with no bedding. Do not towel the dog off - you want as much of the solution to stay on the dog as possible, so it can 'work'. I allow the dog to drip dry in the crate with no bedding. It helps to have the house heat ON, and a nice tasty bone or high value chewy in the crate to distract the dog for a bit. After half an hour I let the dog out and towel dry as best I can and then let them work themselves dry by running all about the house. You do NOT rinse the solution off - you let it dry completely and that is it, until the next bath.

If you have a tiny dog, if you do not wish to make up such a large quantity of solution, the single batch is as follows:

  • 1-1/2 cups of 1% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tbsp MOM
  • 1 tbsp Epsom salts
  • 1 tbsp Borax

You may be able to put this into a spritzer bottle and spritz problem areas on your dog, but I find it best to tackle the entire dog with a full body treatment first, before using the spritz bottle for a spot treatment approach.

I find the effects of the dipping solution last about 24 hours, so you could dip every other day. Some dogs may find this harsh to the skin, so a follow up with coconut oil applied topically after the dog has dried off may help areas that are getting dried out. Usually you can get a handle on the skin infection if you dip every other day for the first week and then reduce to every few days until it clears - it is something you have to play by ear as each dog is individual.

I would try all these approaches - dipping, borax in the water, health food supplements - and give it 3-6 weeks for results.

Please report back!

My dog has severe skin allergy. I tried everything for him, some worked in a short period time, and the disease comes back. Last time I tried the Nzymes, it helped for a year and it seems like that doesn't help anymore. I love this website that good people out there willing to share their experiences.

I have a 3 mo. old lab with the same problem. I have used ACV (apple cider vinegar) from a spray bottle, and seen a difference right away. I am going to give her another treatment today. Also I started taking 2 tble spoons in 2 or 3 ounces of water for my acid reflux about 3 days ago, and so far have had no reflux problems. Hope I found a somewhat cure for me and my Pup. I found all this info on this website. Good Luck

Hey Teresa!

This genetic disease is hard to get on top of. As you have found, remedies work for only so long and then they seem to stop working and the itching and bumps return. Frequent bathing helps - you can google shampoos you can make at home; vet bought shampoos are equally effective [or ineffective] and Ted's anti-staph remedy may also prove helpful. I find that alkalizing the water can help; the standard dose is 1 teaspoon per liter of water, for about 7 days, and then reduce to half a teaspoon for another 7 days and then a maintenance dose of one quarter teaspoon to one liter of water. I tend to discontinue the baking soda water when the skin clears up - this to avoid it becoming an ineffective remedy. You may also find Ted's borax protocol for dogs to be useful if you are dealing with yeast. Keep fighting this disease from the inside out with immune boosters such as vitamin C supplementation, digestive enzymes and natural infection fighters such as Echinacea and golden seal; you might also consider cleansing supplements such as bentonite clay orally as well as in a shampoo. You just have to play it by ear. Some find switching the protien cold turkey to be effective - for some it might mean every other week or every other month- or every other day; it all depends on your dog and the results you get, but this approach has helped quite a few.

Please keep us posted!
