Can Dry Herbs of Essiac Tea Be Used for Dog? If So, Dosage?

Posted By Jamie (Duluth, Mn) on 07/28/2017

Hello, I am curious how much dry essiac I could give my dog in a pill pocket or something like that? He doesn't like the tea but will eat the dry herbs that I ground up into powder. I don't want to over dose because all the doses I see are in liquid form. Any advice would be great! Thank you. FYI he has Thyroid cancer, but the tumor was removed. We want to give the dry tea, just not sure how much at a time. He weighs 19 pounds. Thanks kindly.

Dear Jamie,

If I were going to give the dry powder to my dog, I would probably start with 1/4 teaspoon once a day, and reduce the amount if you notice side effects, or increase the amount if you feel it isn't helping.

I think the side effects to look for are diarrhea as the turkey rhubarb in Essiac has a purging effect or general malaise due to a detox reaction.

Please let us know how it works for you. There isn't a lot of information about using the powdered Essiac as opposed to the tea. While I think the tea is better, since the tea making process is taking time to draw out the healing properties of the herbs, I have certainly seen wonderful results with at least the slippery elm and burdock root (two components of Essiac) taken in a powdered form.

Jamie,

I came across this post today about using dry essiac powder for a cat. I thought it might be helpful to you. She used 1/2 teaspoon a day of dry powder for her cat with good results.
