Why did my stools turn black after taking doses of pepto bismo

Posted By Priscilla (Uxbridge, Ma.) on 01/08/2015

I had diarrhea for about 5 days then took some Pepto Bismol for a day. About 5 doses. The next day I was fine...Then the next day (today)my stools changed to jet black. Don't know what to do. Any advice short of going to a doctor would be welcomed. I know a doctor would have fun doing about 50 tests on me and running up a huge bill to pay for his new Porsch.

My husband used to take Pepto often. It does cause the stool to become black. It can also cause the tongue to become black. It is a short term side effect.

Hope that will reassure you!

Hi Priscilla...I think you took too much Pepto-Bismol, which is well know for turning stools black because of the action of the bismuth in this drug. The black stools should go away in a few days. So give yourself a few days and, if the black stools persist, then see your doctor.
