What Vitamins Should a Woman Be Taking At Age 50?

Posted By Joey (Arcadia, California) on 03/26/2017

I am confused on which vitamins are suggested for a healthy 50 year old women who has been in menopause for 4 years now. I have heard calcium supplements don't do much good and are a waste of money. And in general I am just confused on all of the vitamins I need to be taking at this age. I feel like the doctors just push stuff and don't really know. If you have any suggestions or even a website I can check out for more info I would really appreciate it. Have a nice day.

Dear Joey,

I have a few thoughts about vitamins/supplements to consider for 50ish women. It is something I ponder some, having just turned 50 myself.

Whatever vitamins and minerals you can get from food sources will be most readily absorbed.

I have had a lot of success using herbal infusions instead of vitamins (though I do take some supplements also.) Herbal infusions provide the body with vitamins and minerals that are more easily assimilated by the body than pills.

Susun Weed, an experienced herbalist, suggests the following herbs for this season of life for overall health.

  • Oatstaw (you could eat oatmeal regularly for similar benefit)
  • Nettle
  • Horsetail

Personally, I am still finding Red Raspberry Leaf to be excellent as well.

Herbal infusions also help you to make sure you are drinking enough quality fluids.

(Susun Weed recommends other herbs for specific ailments, but those would be overall tonifying and nourishing. She also recommends regular consumption of good quality yogurt and seaweed.)

Vitamin C is something that I like to take regularly, and vitamin D if I am not getting regular sunlight.

A tablespoon of blackstrap molasses is also a great way to get a variety of whole food vitamins and minerals.

Consuming whole foods and reducing consumption of processed foods and fast foods will maximize the nutrients obtained from food.

Just a few thoughts!

Hi Joey, It might possibly be the case that you could be short of a Vitamin or two, but I would be more concerned about a deficiency of minerals. A good quality multi-mineral tablet would be a good start but some companies offer better ones than others of course. Some try to cut corners with your health just to get your money: surprise, surprise!! Some tablets do not make it past your stomach acid! One Company you might like to try is "Extend life" from New Zealand. They tick all the boxes for me anyway and I hope they could help you somehow. They have fast international delivery and great customer service in my experience. They have a special tablet especially tailored for women too!

Cheers, Michael

Greetings Joey,

If I had only one choice I would grab the Vitamin E 800 IU - Which has helped me with my attitude through all the stages of menopause. Given two choices, I would grab - Vitamin C. I started with 500mg in my late forties or early fifties and seemly took away the pain and pressure I had in my eyes.
