What are safe remedies for canker sores in children

Posted By Sheryl (Westfield Nj) on 03/09/2015

Hi. I am reading cures for canker sores but there re many mentions that they are painful. Children are not going to be accepting of this kind of pain. Are there any treatments that do not hurt? The Alum and ACV will most definitely hurt. What about the baking soda? I've always used baby aspirin but it is not an immediate cure..it takes a bit of time but does give relief.

Dear Sheryl,

Baking soda for a canker sore is not painful at all. It just tastes salty.

A bit of thyme and sage (from your spice cabinet, if you have them) wrapped in a bit of paper towel, held on the sore 10 minutes before eating and several times a day, helps a lot, too. Not painful, but not delicious.

I would not be surprised to see black tea or chamomile tea have a helpful effect either and they might taste the best. Those are what I use when my children lose a tooth to stop the bleeding.

bh

Canker sores are also greatly relieved on the spot (not cured) by dabbing on a bit of coconut oil. But the salt water and/or baking soda rinses are more useful for curing.

Also, I've noticed a surprisingly large component of destressing in curing and preventing them.

We always just chewed fresh kale greens. In a few hours you can tell the pain goes away.
