Tonsil Hypertrophy - Remedy Needed for Shrinking Big Tonsils

Posted By WM (Virginia) on 01/24/2024

Hi All,

I am wanting to ask if anyone has had success with shrinking enlarged tonsils that are essentially hypertrophied? I had a viral and bacterial infection in my throat years ago that made my tonsils enlarged in size. Once the illness passed, my tonsils came down approximately 50% in size, but they are still moderately sized today. However, there is no pain with the tonsils, the tonsils are just sitting there in the way, and I want to reduce the size of the tonsils without surgically removing them. I put DMSO on a q-tip, and rubbed that on my tonsil in hopes that the DMSO directly on the tonsil would shrink the tonsillar tissue? I only tried it 2 times for a minute approximately, and haven't noticed too much. I am uncertain if this remedy/protocol would work but I would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions to shrink the size of my chronically enlarged/hypertrophied tonsils. Thank you!

Dear WM,

Yes, my children are prone to hypertrophy of the tonsils.

My 12 year old had had enlarged tonsils for quite a while. He had a strep infection and they remained large after he was well. They were not red or inflamed. He also started having trouble with tonsil stones.

I had him gargle Listerine daily. This brought some immediate relief and over the course of 6 weeks his tonsils have reduced significantly.

Listerine actually has the equivalent of essential oils in it. It has thymol, concentrated thyme, which is highly antibacterial. Other brands and generic do not have as high a concentration of active ingredients, so I recommend using only Listerine. We prefer the blue color to the gold, but I think either is fine.

If that is not enough to reduce your tonsils, you may try adding some other anti-inflammatory measures.

Avoid sugar and dairy for a few weeks to see if that helps.

Take 4 capsules of turmeric daily for a few weeks.

You could gargle twice a day; it may help faster. I was happy to get my 12 year old to gargle once a day. ;)
