Temporomandibular Pain After Ear Surgery

Posted By Marsh (Colorado ) on 03/30/2022

After having ear surgery, my temporomandibular muscle is throbbing. (The surgeon had to cut it in order to get to the location.) I've tried arnica cream & pellets, minimal tylenol and muscle relaxant. It eases until after eating. Liquid diet? Prefer not to use drugs so any suggestions welcome!

Dear Marsh,

I think a liquid diet would be a really good idea.

I have had jaw surgery twice and, while that is not what you had, you have the same area trying to heal. Each time my doctor had me on a liquid/soft diet for 3-6 weeks.

Baby food is convenient, as are smoothies. When it was a six week diet I made normal dinner for my family and put mine in the food processor. Spaghetti that way isn't bad, but stir fry is. Ha.

Magnesium before bed will also help relax things.

And you could try turmeric for inflammation. It is easy to add to soups and smoothies. I have used 1/2 to 1 teaspoon 3-4 times a day like that.

Finally, comfrey salve, gently massaged into the muscles several times a day should help.

I hope you get beyond this soon!
