Suggestions needed for menopausal symptoms

Posted By Kay (St Augustine, Fl/usa) on 12/30/2010

I am in my mid 60's. I was on estrogen since having an hysterectomy at the age of 43. When I turned 60 the Doctor advised against taking estrogen after the age of 60 and told me that after the first year or so, I should be alright, as I should be weaned off. I am still having mood changes, hot flashes, etc, all the signs of menapause and may be an issue as far as dental bone loss(I wrote another post). I have been to the health food stores and purchased Gingko and other items for menapause none of which has helped. Any suggestions?

MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS I am 67 and have found a plant estrogen formula that I take 28 days a month, without the side effects of drugs. It really helps with hot flashes and old looking skin. And coconut oil is is great for dry skin, anywhere. Coconut oil becomes a solid when it is cooled. Try using an insert about the size of a green pea of coconut oil vaginally for for dryness or odor, maybe twice a week. I thought I was having a recurrent infection but this fixed the problem w/o expensive medications or repeated doctor visits.

I was having hot flashes every hour on the hour for the last year. The only thing I've found that helps me is maca root. I ordered it online. I use about 1/2 tsp. in my coffee in the mornings and my hot flashes have decreased to having maybe 3 or 4 a day and they're not as severe either.

Coconut oil seemed to work for me for a while but not anymore. Now I get very dry skin, drier than usual and I ask myself whether it comes from cooking with coconut oil and if I put it in my hands strangely enough after a while my hands feel very dry. This is really odd..... I am going to try to cook only with olive oil for a while. After taking a bath nowadays my skin feels a bit itchy, especially on the places that are against something and on my arms even feels rough. My hands sometimes feel like sanding paper. I have started to take kelp to see if it helps as I read that dry skin can be a lack of iodine.

I swear by flaxseed oil, I love it and my dry skin cleared up after taking 2 tablespoons a day. You can;t cook with it though. I put it on salads, in smoothies and sometimes I just down the tablespoon. I just started doing the transdermal Magnesium therapy a couple of days ago and that makes my skin soft too. Search this site to read about it, a great therapy. ~lisa~

Hi Francesca. I have been taking Lugols solution and that helped my dry skin enormously. Just 2 drops a day. As already stated I am not so sure about the merits of coconut fat. Would like to have contact direct as we seem to have a few things in common. Don't want to post my email directly though. Hope admin. will help!

Hi Mesem, here is my e-mail address: frigaud(at)hotmail(dot)com, no problem! By the way, I don'think that we have Lugol's here, I will see in Britain but for the time being I take kelp, I suppose that it is the same thing as it contain iodine..... And to Lisa from Atlanta, I tried flax seed oil capsules but they didn't do a thing. The reason I didn't try the oil itself is because I am quite afraid that it will go rancid which seems to be quite bad, even being able to cause cancer.
