Sudden Onset of Aphasia After Years of Having Auras and Moderate Headaches

Posted By Elizabeth (Ny) on 05/04/2017

I am not reporting a cure because I don't know what is happening. For many years I have gotten optical auras followed by headache, not like a migraine, but a headache nonetheless. This past Tuesday, I had had two optical auras within and hour and right after I suffered a severe headache on the left side of my head and my speech became impaired. I could not put a sentence together..I was trying to talk and the words were jumbled. This lasted about 10 minutes and even after I had a slight headache. I did not have my clonazepam and as I went into panic attack mode, I spent the whole day Tuesday just pacing around and my legs were wobbly and I could just not settle down which I am sure did not make matters any better. I had done some research, and found out about aphasia which effects the left side of the brain and causes speech impairments. I did manage to get to sleep that night and slept well, yesterday, Wednesday, I was fine..I ran my errands, cleaned my land lady's house and mine and felt fine.

I am okay today but still shaken because so many people are saying I had a stroke yet one person I spoke with blurted out aphasia which her daughter suffers. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and am trying to remain positive that this has everything to do with something neurological. I was asked by my doctor's nurse after discussing the fact that I may have had a mini stroke, but why she began to question me about my eyes made a lot of sense to me.

I wear drug store glasses because I cannot afford new glasses and have not had an eye exam since 2008 and started wearing drug store glasses in 2012. I am on the computer way too much and have noticed that I get more auras than normal because of it. I am trying to stay positive because the nurse said it could have been a mini stroke but could also be something neurological due to my eye condition as well as having so many head injuries in my life. I was just to my doctors the third week of March and all was well with me.

I am scared and I just don't know what to think. Can someone please guide me through this? I know I do have to go to the doctor's, but as much as I have had auras in the past with moderate headaches, this has never happened to me.

Dear Elizabeth,

I am sure these symptoms are disconcerting. I am hopeful that the neurologist was able to shed some light.

As I read your post, a couple of things come to mind.

First, the history of visual auras indicates a longstanding problem, for which there are many remedies that are successful for many folks.

Given the possibility of a stroke, you might check into niacin/niacinamide, which brings many relief from migraines.

Cayenne pepper is report to improve blood flow and dissolve clots.

The other thing that struck me when I read your post was the cleaning of your house and your land lady's home. Do you do housecleaning for a living? I have known personally of 3 people with a significant health issue (psoriasis) that cleaned. There is a connection, I believe, between regular exposure to chemical cleaners and health issues.

How is your diet and nutritional status?

Keep us posted!

What has happened since your initial post? Were the doctors able to find the cause and help you?
