Seeking remedy to help depression while pregnant

Posted By Fran_david (New York, Albany) on 06/01/2015

Hi, I'm 5 months pregnant and I have depression. Things are really getting on top of me, especially work. I feel like I'm being given too much work to do, but when I talked to my boss I realized it wasn't just me finding it hard to cope. Being single, I worry about money, having a baby and getting work done. I need something to help me relax naturally which will not affect my pregnancy. Anything?

Dear Fran,

My first thought was the same as Mmsg - magnesium.

Just yesterday I was realizing that things were stressing me more than they ought. I took some Natural Calm (a double dose for me! ) and it did seem to calm me down. I usually take Natural Calm (a magnesium supplement) at night.

Shonda Parker, author of The Naturally Healthy Pregnancy, recommends 500-1000mg of magnesium per day for pregnant moms. My favorite way to take it is Natural Calm. Do start small and work up to more if needed. It can cause diarrhea if you take more than you need (your body's way to get rid of the excess.)

A tablespoon a day of Blackstrap Molasses is also like a natural vitamin, but much better. My midwife would recommend it in pregnancy. It has magnesium. If your body needs magnesium, this would likely not be enough, but I mention it as an inexpensive way for a pregnant mama to get some super-nutrition.

I hope you feel much more relaxed, too.

Fran, after much research, my favorite way of taking magnesium is dermally using magnesium oil spray. I apply it to the bottom of my feet nightly and the calm effect is wonderful. Since you bypass the digestive tract, you will not have the "bathroom" effect like other methods. Your body will absorb the magnesium as needed...and most of us need it.

What's wonderful about magnesium oil - it's very inexpensive. You can get it at the "Vitamin Shoppe" or "GNC" up where you live or on Amazon.

We wish you all the blessings!

Yes, Depression, know it very well and suffered with it during pregnancy and postpartum. You would benefit from a support group of other single pregnant women or mothers groups. MOPS is mothers of preschoolers usually found through churches . I'm sure there are other community groups out there .Check your library .Dehydration and /or low salt or other minerals can affect hormones and so can lack of sunlight(vitamin D) or fresh air . Walking in the park can lift you up . Epson salt baths help remineralize. Lamaz or prebirth groups may be available to you to help with uncertainties or questions you may have about what lies ahead. You may find a group online of young single moms to blog with for support and reassurance . For myself , faith has helped me overcome many fears and uncertainties . Find three friends you can trade child care with so you don't feel helpless when your baby is born.Research daycares you plan to use now before the baby is born. Right at the stage of birth you will get the hormones you need to carry you through the newbaby stage. Nursing brings on calmness and restores your body . B vitamins taken in the right amounts help with stress, too much increases appetite. Prepare to enjoy sharing your life with this precious child, you will be Blessed !!!
