Remedies for Receding Gums are Not Working

Posted By Izzie (London, Uk) on 04/16/2017

Hello, I have had receeding gums for a while now but still have not discovered a cure. I visit the dentist regularly and also had invisalign to straighten my teeth. My actual teeth look in good health and I was told by the dentist that my teeth and gums are very healthy. Aside from this my gum continues to receed. I have never had gintivitis or any other plaque or decay, just gum recession. I use a sensitive manual toothbrush as well as an electric. I brush gently. Use sensitive toothpaste. But I every once in a while have sore and sensitive gums and they continue to receed. I also recently had them whitened which made my gum sore afterwards also. I currently have a little redness from the bleach that must have burnt it a little. Can anyone recommend something to heal gums and specifically target the recession? I cannot deal with anything too harsh as I know it will cause a problem for me. Any help or suggestions would be great. I would like to get a routine going and see if I notice a change. Thank you

Dear Izzie,

I would stop using sensitive teeth toothpaste. I think it is hard on the teeth in the long term.

We have found that black walnut powder works well for sensitive teeth.

Mix equal parts of black walnut powder and baking soda and use as a tooth powder. This will also help keep the mouth alkaline (especially overnight) which will help to keep it healthier. If the baking soda is too much for you, you can used charcoal powder with the black walnut powder. That will make a messy tooth powder though.

Hydrogen peroxide can safely whiten teeth over time and may also help with the gum recession. I keep a bottle or 3% in my shower and put some water in my mouth and then add some hydrogen peroxide (try to get about half water, half 3% peroxide) and keep it in my mouth for a few minutes each day. This has definitely improved my gum health.

Hi Izzie

At the moment l am trying COQ10 powder, from 100mg capsules. Open the capsule and sprinkle a layer on the gums before bed, just leave it there. I think one capsule will last a week at least. The gums I am treating are three lower front teeth, so it's easy. Maybe make a paste with a bit of water and dab it on for more difficult positions. I saw improvement after two applications.

I do take other supplements that help, such as vit c, Bs and collagen, and rarely have sugar.

It's worth a try, good luck!
