Problems with docs for swollen tongue issues

Posted By Pam (Dallas, Texas, USA ) on 06/27/2009

Hello Ted, Please help if you can.

Many years ago my husband was having digestive issues and the doctors never tested him - he was put on Nexium and has been taking it ever since. In 2007, he was having some difficulty swallowing and a barium swallow test revealed no abnormalities.

In January of last year, he had a lump on the right side of his neck. Two months later, the doctors said a biopsy showed squamous cell "debris". He began to lose some weight and a few months later, all of a sudden, his tongue swelled. A PET scan showed only slight activity in the tongue area, and that can happen to anyone because of the muscular activity during swallowing while the test is being done. He also had severe pain in the back of his head.

There was never any "official" diagnosis of cancer. But the doctors here are robots and very close-minded. They just said cancer - chemo and radiation every day for 2 months, terrible side effects, doom and gloom prognosis. It's all about money and big business.

We have always believed in supplements and alternatives. He began taking a strict regime of supplements, and then went to Mexico last summer for treatment and had low-dose radiation and chemotherapy along with therapeutic doses of Laetrile and Vitamin C. The lump on his neck completely disappeared. During the treatment, his tongue swelled more, which they said was normal for the effects of the treatment.

His normal weight should be around 170. After the treatment, his weight was 125 pounds. He had terrible ulcers in his mouth which were very quickly healed with a special mouthwash. He began eating, had high protein drinks, and gained 30 pounds in 30 days! Over the following months, he exercised, had more energy, and felt better. His tongue remained only slightly swollen just enough to affect his speech where he cannot pronounce some letters clearly.

In the past two months, he had a lot of stress at work, and he began to lose weight, and about a month ago, his tongue swelled more and his throat was sore and inflamed. He went to the emergency room. His lab work was perfectly normal and CAT scan showed NO tumors or masses. The scan did show "cervical spondylosis". They prescribed antihistamine and antibiotic.

In the time since, he has had the severe pain in the back of his head and his neck is always tight and sore. He has had an EXTREME amount of mucus in his throat and thick, sticky saliva in his mouth. It makes talking and eating difficult. His throat is healed, but because of the saliva and because his tongue is swollen, he cannot move food around and so he doesn't eat much. He had previously been told that he should have all his teeth removed.

I have been reading Earth Clinic and believe that he has a very acidic condition which may have contributed to these problems. After reading some of your posts, I wonder if his swollen tongue may be due to severe acidosis and fungus issues. So 3 days ago, I started him on the baking soda/potassium citrate rinse 3 x daily. Plus drinking the baking soda in water morning and night. Already his tongue is pink when before it was coated and either very yellow or white.

It is still swollen, though and I am worried about him not being able to eat and gain weight. He cannot afford more weight loss.

His skin color is good, and as I said, his lab work was normal, and he says that except for these issues, he feels fine.

Do you think there's a chance that all this is indeed being caused by fungus and acid conditions that can be controlled?

The only potassium citrate I can find is in capsule form, so I have been emptying the powder from the capsules to mix with the baking soda.

He is taking vitamin C, tumeric, grape seed, red wine, lysine, B12, zinc, inositol. We also have grapefruit seed extract and oil of oregano.

My primary concern for him right now is to reduce the tongue swelling so that he can move food around in his mouth, chew properly, and ingest larger amounts of food so that he can gain weight.

Can you offer some recommendations?

Thank you kindly.

To Pam from Dallas: I am so sorry to hear of your husband's condition; I hope he is feeling much better now. My mother also suffers from mouth and tongue ulcers...could you please tell me what mouthwash helped him? We are at the end of our rope. Thank you! JODI

Jodi, thank you, we are still trying to find something to alleviate the swelling.

I just now read your post, so hopefully, you'll check back.

It is a prescription called Miracle Mouthwash - as I understand, it contains Benedryl, Lidocaine, and Milk of Magnesia. It quickly healed his ulcers and also provides temporary numbing relief. Perhaps this will help your mother. You might also consider B-complex and B-12 supplements.

Take care.
