Suddenly Regained Sensation in Mouth After Dentist Severed Nerve in 1984

Posted By Maureen (San Leandro, Ca) on 07/13/2018

In January 1984, during Winter Break of my first year of college, I got my wisdom teeth pulled. Unfortunately, the oral surgeon cut a nerve and I lost feeling in the left half of my tongue and gums. Suddenly tonight, 5 minutes ago I regained feeling in my mouth! How odd. It was numb for 34 years!

I am wondering how this happened. I did get my teeth cleaned on Wednesday morning as I do twice a year. Also got a pad replaced on my saxophone today for the first time since June 1983.

I am wondering if the healing of my nerve had to do with the bleaching of my teeth? For the first time, I tried UV light treatment to bleach my teeth. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi, I know it's been years since you posted this question. However, I'm really curious to find out more about your situation as it might help lead to a helping someone.

  • I know it's been long but do you remember what you did that might help provide a closer clue to regenerating nerve sensation in your mouth?
  • What type of UV light did you use? Was it red light therapy ( Near Infrared light)?
  • Since you've posted this, do you still have nerve sensation in your mouth?

Thank you,

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Oscar
