My perioral dermatitis not improving

Posted By Bugsy77 (Wichita, Ks, Usa) on 11/16/2012

I have had perioral dermatitis for a couple months now. I started out with a tiny spot and asked my general practitioner who said it was OK to put hydrocortisone on it. Well, after reading these posts, that was a big mistake. It kept coming back and getting bigger. Then I went back and he gave me a steroid cream because he said it was dry skin. That would work and two days after I stopped it would come back. Now it on the right side above my mouth, and there is a spot on both sides of my chin. They have gotten bigger even though I have been off steroids for a week.

I have used Apple Cider Vinegar on them, but they get really bright red. I am afraid I am burning my skin and going to scar it. After ACV I put calendula gel and then coconut oil. Still extremely red and dry. Also, I tried drinking ACV in a tonic with honey, cinammon and ginger mixed with warm water and had horrible heartburn ALL day and ended up with a horrible sore throat. Sore throat is better today and no heartburn. Then I tried hydrogen peroxide, calendula, and coconut oil. Been doing this for about a week. Sometimes the red diminishes some with the HP, but the spots are really dry and flaky, but won't flake off. Now, other skin on my face is feeling rough and dry too. Should I only use the HP on the spots instead of everywhere? I started getting a red spot by my eye and was afraid it was spreading so that is why I have used it everywhere. I tried to rub lavendar tea tree oil and grapeseed oil combo last night, but they seemed more red when I woke up this morning than using the HP/calendula gel/coconut oil mix. I have also used yogurt masks a few times, but I haven't noticed much difference with it.

I am using free/clear laundry soap, SLS free soap on my body and in my shampoos, and baking soda/peroxide for toothpaste.

I have always had good skin and this is becoming debilitating appearance wise. I am feeling defeated, but trying to stay positive to alleviate stress. I have been stressed lately because I get agitated and irritable and angry sometimes without understanding it. I have indigestion and feel like I need to burp, but can't. I have had a couple episodes that seem like gallbladder attacks, but my Ultrasound was unremarkable and I don't want a radioactive tracer put in me for a HIDA scan. I lost quite a bit of weight in about six months, but have gained some back because my craving for sweets and carbs is crazy. My fear is that I have a Candida overgrowth and that is why my face is breaking out. Not sure about the best way to deal with all this. I have a really hard time chewing or drinking yucky stuff, but also don't want my face to look like this forever or get worse. Any advice is appreciated. I don't know where to go from here.

Hi Bugsy77, Sorry for your struggle with perioral dermatitis. Not fun. The first thing I would have to say is stay away from the hydrocortisone/ steroid path. It won't ever resolve the root cause of the PD, only cover it up temporarily as you have learned. And they just aren't good for our body. Remember, the skin is our largest organ so, whatever you put on it is absorbed right into our system. Neither of these meds are healthy for our body. And can lead to other imbalances.

Your move towards healthier choices is a really good one- I. E. avoiding SLS and toothpastes. This will have an impact on your health too.

From your description of your emotions, it sounds as if your liver needs to detox. There are many liver detox remedies here on EC. Just remember that sometimes when we detox the liver, more anger, agitation, irritability rise up because these "live" in our liver.

Other descriptions of your state are definitely a case of candida as well. Here is where you will find candida tests:

And here is the entire candida section where you will find various remedies/ protocols:

I would suggest you start by cleaning up your diet. Eliminate sugar and white flour products immediately since candida thrives on these. You most likely crave sugar as candida is a beast for it! If you google The Body Ecology Diet you will find great information to help you rid of this. I have helped many friends through this protocol. And on their site you will find many recipes as well as ideas to help get you through this holiday season.

I hope this info helps. Best to you, Lisa
