Periwinkle: Notes which I have contain this 1995 study done by an M. D. Who gave Vitamin C in a trial to patients with glaucoma, but cataracts are clearly mentioned several times since it's all related. Notice he associates lifelong deficiency of Vitamin C as a possible root cause of retinal detachment also! :

It is the experience of this author that private patients do not present with macular degeneration, cataracts to remove, or glaucoma who have taken vitamins for years with ascorbic acid.
------------------------
Glaucoma accompanies the cataract patients, so a daily intake of vitamin C could save the country literally in the billions of dollars.
-------------------------
Cataract removal represents the largest surgical expense in Medicare, and there are
many patients in my practice who improve several lines of vision on the Snellen eye
Chart.
--------------------------
With a deficiency in vitamin C, abnormal mucopolysaccharide formation occurs. Disorganization of the vitreous body with the formation of vitreous bands is often associated with retinal detachment. 5
Here also the association of glaucoma with these people would be an interesting observation. The root site you may recognize as one of the late Dr. Linus Pauling's institutes:

There's huge amounts of info there on many nutrient studies done over many decades. As to the practical application of this there are eye drops out there non-prescription, but quite expensive for a tiny vial! Just search "carnosine eye drops". The research was done in Russia in the 1980's. Or first you could try the cheapest route: oral plain old Vitamin C several grams per day spread out through the day in 3 or 4 doses like that smoker in the study, but remember with Vitamin C high doses right off the bat with no gradual increase will result in 'bowel intolerance' till the body adjusts. Then for possible even more direct and faster results, you can make your own Vitamin C eye drops. Someone had a recipe for that posted here recently, but I can't find it.
